That's it FF - these people are standing alone in the clothes they had on that morning with literally nothing else at all and it's the same for everyone around them so just where do they go from here? The situation those poor people are in is just incomprehensible - I just cannot imagine that situation and all I want to do is help them.

emmatmg · 29/12/2004 19:14

I agree FF.

I watching the news earlier I thought how does it start to get better for them, where do they start to build a life again, but also how do they clean the whole place up?
Where does all the rubble, debise, etc etc go?

Simple questions really but it's so wide spread that it seems almost impossible to answer.

If I have so many questions, god only knows what the people living in the area must be thinking.

emmatmg · 29/12/2004 19:16

was editing my post when you agreed GDK.

another "snap" for us

jampots · 29/12/2004 19:21

Sarahu - i think i posted further down about my dh's old work colleague who went out to Phuket to be a diving instructor. Dh wants to know if you are able to locate where he would be if at all possible? His name is Tony Andrews. Many thanks if you can

Daily AIDS deaths.

Zebra is right in that there are diseases such as AIDS that take thousands of lives daily.

But, that doesn't minimise the scale of this disaster, and it is the circumstances surrounding all these deaths that is the tragedy. I saw on the news last night a woman who had lost all 4 of her children and her husband. Her 8 month old baby had been swept out of her arms by the water.

I hate to keep comparing it to 9/11, but for me it keeps bringing that awful day back. It would have been one thing if my husband had been killed in a car accident or keeled over and died from a heart attack, but the circumstances of his death make it so much harder to bear. Because of that I keep thinking about the terror that these poor people in Asia must have faced in their final moments.

JanH · 29/12/2004 20:15

Hugs from me too, Kate. You must understand exactly how those affected are feeling and it must bring it all back to you. Hope you and your girls are OK.

Twiglett · 29/12/2004 20:16

here you are

online at DEC

or

Disasters Emergency Appeal number:
0870 60 60 900

JanH · 29/12/2004 20:17

I have been to the DEC website several times today and the fact that it is mostly showing the Sudan appeal (even though they need us just as much, I know) is a bit disconcerting.

SueW · 29/12/2004 20:38

it's been updated now

marthamoo · 29/12/2004 20:47

(((hugs))) for you and your girls, Kate xx

juniperdropofbrandy · 29/12/2004 20:49

I agree with Kate, even though this is a natural disaster it reminds me too of 9/11. It's the total shock and scale of it There's the total disbelief and just being able to get your head around this??

Disasters Emergency Appeal number: 0870 60 60 900

PuffTheMagicDragon · 29/12/2004 21:43

Back to my usual name, post Christmas.

Let's keep bumping this thread, so everyone on here has the links and numbers to donate - or should we start another thread, just with the links and numbers which would be very focused?

The feeling of utter helplessness is overwhelming. I don't know anyone personally affected by this tragedy, but seeing a man and woman clutching their drowned babies is deeply distressing.

I do hope the relief efforts start to be more evident very soon.

(((hugs))) to you Kate.

Glad you are ok Lou.

My SIL is in Thailand on holiday for a month, was luckily on the other coast on Boxing Day, but one of the boys renting my holiday place here has lost his girlfriend. He kept trying her mobile and could only get the answer service. Eventually he got a call from someone on Monday to tell him that she has been killed. Horrible.

marthamoo · 29/12/2004 22:04

I'm having trouble donating - I've been trying all day for the DEC appeal.

marthamoo · 29/12/2004 22:05

And as I type it's finally gone through...success.

JanH · 29/12/2004 22:06

Horrible indeed, Cam. Can't imagine it - ringing and ringing and wondering. Poor bloke. Glad your SIL was on the other coast - DD1 had a uni friend on holiday in Thailand and she too was on the other coast, such a relief, but the pain of others is unimaginable.

KateandtheElves · 29/12/2004 22:44

I was emailed these links, websites where you can donate:

AMERICAN RED CROSS

DOCTORS WITHOUT BORDERS

INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL CORPS

UNICEF

We cant get hold of our friend, he is well and truly missing. My friend is going out on the 17th of Jan they were meeting up. If he hasn't heard anything i suppose he will try to find out more when he arrives.

SuzyWongMerrilyOnHigh · 29/12/2004 22:53

Sad hey, but a lot sadder for others, feel for my friend going out though, he is loosing it a bit, they were travelling together and he left him their to come home for a while. I love that boy with a passion he is my light and i hate to see him sad, i suppose all we can do is look out for each other in our lives, im going to meet my friend tomorrow and try and help him as that is the only thing in my power. Puts things into perspective for the entire world, we moan about such trivial crap. But im a great believer in cherishing our own as nobody ever knows whats round the corner. We cant do much over their but we can let the people in our lives no how much we love them dearly.
