Anyone else heard this? A national shutdown of air traffic control as system goes down.

Yeah although I looked on flight radar and some flights are landing at Heathrow?

Maybe it's fewer landings than normal and they are being handled using older, fallback, methods?

Margoliciously · 28/08/2023 12:48

They have to land them somehow right? I think it will affect flights leaving more

I've just watched one heading into Manchester Airport. I haven't yet noticed any circling around in a holding pattern

Nanasueathome · 28/08/2023 12:49

Oooohhhhh
my elder son is an air traffic controller

KateyCuckoo · 28/08/2023 12:49

Flights are still taking off from Heathrow, literally one in my sight as we type...

Margoliciously · 28/08/2023 12:50

That’s a cool job @Nanasueathome I wouldn’t want to be him right now though with lots of flights in the air and the system having technical issues

Margoliciously · 28/08/2023 12:52

Some news outlets are calling it a ‘major failure’. I’m surprised flights are still taking off in that case

Still planes taking off from Birmingham on flight radar, and Heathrow. And Bristol. Planes seem to be landing at all airports. .?

Tiddlywinks63 · 28/08/2023 12:54

Aircraft still flying overhead here, heading to and from Bristol and Cardiff and towards Heathrow.

KateyCuckoo · 28/08/2023 12:54

I mean check out flight radar 24 if you don't believe us...

VeloVixen · 28/08/2023 12:54

Watching flight radar. I plane from San Francisco to Heathrow has just turned west away from London and nkw heading to Birmingham direction.

VeloVixen · 28/08/2023 12:56

A plane has just turned away from Bristol and heading south now.

Margoliciously · 28/08/2023 12:58

‘Traffic flow restrictions’ are in place apparently. So yes, some flights will be getting in and out. But it’s still going to be a problem especially on a day as busy as today

I've got a smallish plane overhead which is unusual for Cornwall. Maybe coincidence. Maybe an ariel photo plane out for the day.

Merapi · 28/08/2023 13:14

I've just tried going onto Flightradar and can't get it to open. I'll just pop out into the garden and look up instead.

dinosaurmommy · 28/08/2023 13:19

We fly out tomorrow. Fingers crossed, it's settled. I'm reading many different things, mainly flights coming into the UK are grounded?

Margoliciously · 28/08/2023 13:24

My ds is meant to be flying into the country tonight. I’m really hoping it’s resolved before then

dinosaurmommy · 28/08/2023 13:26

@Margoliciously hope your son makes it back safely and on time tonight

It won't be long before the conspiracy theorists are out in force.

Us too, only to Ireland for a few days but it’s our first break since just before the pandemic.
Just been trying to see what the situation is at Birmingham airport, which is where we fly from, but the site is down which isn’t a surprise.

I was just thinking this - but you only need to look at twitter and there they are in full batshit mode.

notimagain · 28/08/2023 13:54

Until this is fixed ATC will have to increase separation between flights, so you'll still see aircraft into/out of airports but at reduced frequency:

Yes, and those already in the air before this happened will need to land.
