Anyone else due to fly to Rhodes in the next week? We’re due to go next Tuesday, waiting to hear something from Jet2 as think our hotel may be one of those affected by the fire.

OP posts:

We're yet to claim insurance etc so will keep you guys posted

Soconfusedandbroken · 23/07/2023 11:02

Flights and holidays now cancelled up to and including Tuesday 25th

toomuchlaundry · 23/07/2023 10:51

@noglow wouldn't be able to claim on insurance if you choose rather than be told not to go

And? I'd rather stay safe at home and lose the money

girlwelsh700 · 23/07/2023 11:05

Just received an email from TUI wee edit to fly this week and our flight has been cancelled

Well were.

Are you honestly still planning to go to a distaster zone with stretched emergency services?

notimagain · 23/07/2023 11:11

mumlovesvodka · 23/07/2023 10:21

Jet2 have cancelled all planned flights for today

They are however going to fly the empty planes over to bring people home

FWIW looking the tracking sites there's one enroute to Rhodes now ( left Leeds at 1000 UK time) and also three (?) Easyjet aircraft from different UK airports..(various other foreign operators enroute as well. from various places in Europe)

No sign of TUI registered aircraft yet but there's at least one charter aircraft which could well be a wet lease for somebody trying to get people out.

I would hazard a guess not, hence the word "were"

blacknredsweeties · 23/07/2023 11:11

@Namechangedforthis25 you literally quoted me.

blacknredsweeties · 23/07/2023 11:12

@orangeleavesinautumn I know 😂😂

Anyway it's not my holiday my kids were going with my sister so when I wrote that I didn't know the update.

YankeeDad · 23/07/2023 11:23

Surprisingly we did see touristy looking people with suitcases getting off of an arriving flight earlier this morning … certainly not a full flight but very far from empty !

Theproofofthepudding · 23/07/2023 11:37

There's quite a lot of conflicting Information going around. The media are exaggerating and some of the business owners are being overly positive I think.
Lindos itself is fine apparently., the beach photographed in the media is Glystra beach which is near Kiotari (one of the Hotels damaged had Lindos in its name) Rhodes Town Ixia Faliraki were not under threat so perhaps the people arriving are going there? The fire is not out though and the forests will take many decades to recover

When are you due to fly? We are meant to be flying Tuesday and the only email I’ve had is then reminding me I can check in online from 3.30 this afternoon! 😫

girlwelsh700 · 23/07/2023 12:32

We were due to fly Tuesday on the flight from Manchester full refund offered. This just came out from TUI more than happy to be staying home.

And Ryanair still flying visitors in! ☹️

And my response yet again is why shouldn't they fly passengers in?

It's a Greek island and the Greek authorities haven't closed the airport or requested no more inbound passengers AFAIK.

Multiple airlines, many of the European ones, not just the Brit ones, are continuing to operate in and out.

AuntieJune · 23/07/2023 14:58

I know you have practical stuff to deal with.

But do you ever think how short haul flights like the one you've booked are fuelling climate change which is causing wildfires that are causing disturbance to your holiday plans?

Theproofofthepudding · 23/07/2023 14:59

Ryanair are not a holiday airline though there will still be people who need to get to rhodes, coming home or on business or flying in to help

Fair enough, though the more people land, the more the authorities have to deal with in terms of finding accommodation and the risk increasing if the fires spread.
As they evacuate, they are trying to lessen the strain. Seems flying people in doesn't help that. Less people, less strain on providing services for those already homeless, holidaymakers without hotel rooms, those without food, clothing, passports.

But the Greek authorities will be aware of all the factors you mention...they'll also be aware of the actual area effected by the fires, what resources they have available and also the financial effect, both long and short term, for example, of banning holiday makers. They'll also be aware of the value or not of keeping scheduled air links going - and here I have to point out yet again not everybody gets on flights to go on or come home from holiday...

The Greek authorities can of course drop the ban hammer on inbound flights/leisure travel in an instant, and you'll get no gripes from me if they do so, but so far they have chosen not to do it.

TBH I think the idea circulating that the UK should indulge in what would be little more than virtue signalling by perhaps introducing a unilateral ban on travel to Rhodes because somehow help the Greek authorities out is somewhat patronising....

noglow · 24/07/2023 06:31

I haven't seen a single news article or even a quote that focuses on the residents of Rhodes. It's all about the holiday makers. I'm finding it quite odd. If my home town was on fire they'd be interviewing the residents.

i agree,
the plight of holiday makers is over taking the rest of the news

I mean the holiday makers get to leave! I want to hear about the locals. I'd anyone has seen anything let me know.
