Saying it was because of lockdown that WC could abduct, rape and murder Sarah. He would have done it regardless of lockdown.

The police were given extra powers during lockdown that were ridiculous. Do you remember the two women who were fined for meeting outside for a walk.

I myself had a run in with a single police man in a rural car park demanding to know where I had come from and if I (and my toddler) had “stayed local”. Fucking ridiculous, he wouldn’t be there today demanding that information so yes I do think lockdown had a lot to do with the Sarah everard case it gave him the power to do it and unfortunately for her she didn’t question it.

He would have but undoubtedly lockdown laws made him more bold. He had an excuse to stop a woman and knew passerby’s would be more likely to look the other way as police were stopping lockdown ‘rule breakers’ (who most of the time weren’t actually breaking any rules but that’s another thing…) left right and centre. So I don’t think there was anything wrong with saying it was because of lockdown.

The police have had mad powers during lockdown.

On what pretext could Couzens have arrested her, convinced her she was being arrested, but for lockdown breaches?

Chances are he would have done it anyway so it's not the only reason he was able to do it.

I don't think it would have stopped him. He wanted to rape and murder someone and would just have come up with a different way of getting a woman into his car.

100% right. Less people on streets, everyone more willing to co-operate and not second guess new introduced laws/rules. It absolutely helped him, no one knows what he said to her.

He did use the additional powers given to police during lockdown to make the arrest believable, didn't he?

I think difficult decisions had to be made, but was very uncomfortable with the with the way people (including me) were so compliant with having freedoms removed and the way the police used their authority during that time.

All the high profile occasions where they over stepped the mark (calling it a banned picnic when women were walking with coffee for example) were against women. Large groups of young men weren't stopped and fined, they picked easy targets. My disabled friend stopped for a rest whilst walking along a seafront and was moved on by police, not allowed tonsot at that time (or at least that how police were interpreting it). Men playing football on the beach were left to it.

I'm sure WC would have found a target some way, but the way the police had been behaving towards ordinary law abiding citizens did make it easier.

If the lockdown rules DIDNT help him abduct Sarah why didn’t he do it sooner? It sounds like he’s been sick for a while. If a policeman stopped me walking and told me I was being arrested and to get in his car in normal times I definitely would have questioned it and argued. It was a stupid amount of power for police to have.

Had some of the ridiculous rules not been put in to place (with a lot of society backing them) would it have been so easy for him to convince his victim she had broken any rules? People were being fined for sitting on benches ffs. Majority of the public were not questioning it or were happy to give the police/government even more power.

He knew he could use it to his advantage, It made it easier for him that's all.

@Seasonschange He isn't sick. It was premeditated; it was an organised killing and there were extensive forensic countermeasures. He knew exactly what he was doing. He deserves every atom of blame.

@Seasonschange I doubt most young women would think to argue back with a police officer arresting them for whatever the reason was he was stating. I surely wouldn't have at her age, I'd have gone to the police station with him and hoped to have "helped" resolve any misunderstanding

She's an anti lockdowner. Using the Sarah Everard case to push her agenda is both distasteful and a fucking atrocious take.
It could just as easily have been for suspicion of drugs or anything else random. A lot of people will just generally comply with authority if the person is convincing enough.

Yes, lockdown gave him an excuse to stop her, but he may have stopped her or any lone woman for another 'reason'.

Did lockdown give him a reason to go to a McDs' drive-in without trousers and pants and expose himself?

He was perhaps 3 x the weight of her, so even if she had protested about his 'reason for arrest' he could have bundled her into his car.

Lockdown is some sort of holy cow that can’t be criticised for the unintended (but entirely predictable) negative consequences it caused

I personally know of 3 people who took their own lives, and another woman killed by her adult son when she tried to stop him leaving the house to see friends during lockdown

Yet the number of times I’ve been told by people ‘oh but maybe they would have died eventually/in other circumstances/oh they were clearly not well’

No, let’s say it like it is. Lockdown clearly saved lives through its primary aim but it was a very blunt instrument which also clearly caused or expedited the deaths of many others, either by depriving them of medical treatment, taking their mental health to breaking point or exposing them to violence they would otherwise not have encountered or been able to escape from

It’s not an insult to lockdown to point this out
