I'm really feeling for that woman who held up the sign and caused the crash. I know she was too close but it was an accident and now they're threatening jail. I bet she's scared to death..

OP posts:
covidcloser · 28/06/2021 07:06

@slashlover

That list has nothing to do with the pile up caused by the woman being discussed.

maddiemookins16mum · 28/06/2021 07:12

The organisers/Marshalls need to take some responsibility for it too.

Bullshit! They can only do so much. They can't cover every inch of the route. She's an idiot and the wholly to blame here.

Some of the comments on here I hope I never upset some of you .
The woman is a idiot but I’m not that hateful to justify in saying things like ‘ I hope she is scared ‘

Ifailed · 28/06/2021 07:29

@Nothingyet
C+, must try harder.

ineedaholidaynow · 28/06/2021 07:34

Maybe @Nothingyet is the woman with the sign.

With the other accident I assumed the 2 young children were simply spectators and nearly hit by flying debris, they didn’t cause the crash.

Agreed. One person is a twit and misjudged. It's not like she took a gun or truck and tried to plough them all down, she doesn't deserve the sheer level of vitriol in some comments.

Ah, hadn't appreciated that, didn't see the 2nd crash. Unfortunate then but again standing right by the side of a massive peloton hammering along fast is a risk. I wouldn't let small kids stand by a fast portion of the route, either stand back or find a spot on an uphill section. You wouldn;t stand by the side of Silverstone!
FunkyChickenMonkeyBusiness · 28/06/2021 07:56

I can't seem to find any footage of the second crash, does anyone have a link please?

Silvercatowner · 28/06/2021 08:07

She cause ONE serious injury to ONE rider who suffered haematoma to wrists

She's bloody lucky she didn't indirectly cause a rider to be killed.

hedgehogger1 · 28/06/2021 08:08

There are idiots every year. Her idiocy was planned and not avoidable by the riders. They had nowhere to go. I can only assume some people on this thread have never seen the TDF. It's not possible to barricade the whole thing it relies on people having consideration and the brains to stay out the way. As for putting fucking bells on them...

anon12345678901 · 28/06/2021 08:19

I hope they catch her and charge her on this. She is not a fan, she wanted her 5 minutes of fame(I don't give a toss who her card was for) She turned her back to the riders to grin at the camera. She deserves to be caught and charged due to her stupidity. The tour deputy director has said he will sue her for the crash and I think that serves her right. She was an idiot, endangered the riders and caused many injuries, not to mention damaged bikes.

OverByYer · 28/06/2021 08:20

Agree she was there to get her self on the TV, the sign she had wasn’t anything to do with the riders or race , it was saying hello to her grandparents.

Zzelda · 28/06/2021 08:23

@slashlover

Here's a list of injuries.
All but one of those were caused in the second crash which had nothing to do with this woman.

@Kokeshi123

She was very stupid, BUT I also feel like there should be clearer barriers to stop any kind of intrusion (accidental or otherwise) onto the track.

Looking at the pictures, a similar pileup could have been caused if someone had (say) accidentally tripped or fainted and fallen in front of the bikes.

It’s not a “track”…

As typical day’s stage is on run on public but closed to traffic roads and covers best part of 200km if not more.

The police man/woman the major intersections and there are barriers at the major crowd points but it’s impossible to fence the whole thing….

The riders will take on the chin ! racing accident but what happened wasn’t a racing accident.

Speaking as TdF fan IMHO this sort of crap has got worse over recent years as camera coverage has improved and some people seem to have become increasingly obsessed with getting themselves on TV.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 28/06/2021 08:49

@NotTheFunKindOfFeminist

I don't like witch hunts. The anxiety she must be feeling must be horrible.

She isn't a direct danger to the public so let her hand herself in when she's ready.

She was a direct danger to a fair few elite cyclists. People who spent years training, who were doing their job when she decided her 10 seconds of telly fame were paramount.

She was wreckless and caused some faily horrific injuries. It wasn't 'an accident', she made the sign before hand, chose where to stand and her moment to step put, she was the premeditated root cause of it. Look at the picture...

Falls aren't uncommon, but this is just ludicrous.

Inastatus · 28/06/2021 08:52

I’ve just watched the video again. The idiotic woman was so far into the road that the cyclist actually hit her arm, not just her stupid sign.

BlackAlys · 28/06/2021 08:52

There are some parts of the tour that are shocking - have a look at previous years - people literally within touching distance of riders. One year, Team SkyB had piss thrown on them from the crowd - no jail terms for them.

I feel sorry for her - she's about to be made an example of, but the whole supporter issue is nuts and needs addressing.

sashh · 28/06/2021 08:54

The organisers/Marshalls need to take some responsibility for it too.

Why? You are going to watch 200+ vehicles pass on a piece of road in a very short time, you should have the common sense to not step out in front of them with your back turned.

We teach primary aged children to stand on the pavement and wait until traffic has passed.

drumandthebass · 28/06/2021 08:55

I don't have any sympathy for her at all. Too often you see people so far out into the road, I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often. They should shame all the idiots who put the riders at risk with this kind of behaviour

notimagain · 28/06/2021 08:56

Well said Curious…

For those who don’t follow this that closely the hazards associated by both the PR caravan and the peloton are highlighted in TV adverts during in tour season, in newspaper adver and often lead vehicles for both the PR caravan (which it itself has caused casualties) and the riders will be blasting out on loudpseakers words to the effect that “danger approaches”.

This spectator waited until the lead vehicles/lead police motor bikes who lead the peloton by maybe 100 meters or less had had gone past their spectating position and then deliberately stepped into the road to get into camera shot.

No sympathy at all, I hope the book gets thrown at them.
