Gulf war stories really stuck with me. Also I think poll tax coming in as my mum was so cross

MiddleEasternMummy · 08/01/2021 18:56

James bugler murder . Even as a young child the sheer horror of it affected me . Rest in peace .

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 08/01/2021 19:00

I thought the first thing was the Berlin Wall but some of the other mid 80s stories ring a bell. I vaguely recall lots of strikes and poll tax protests. Famine in Ethipoia also rings a bell. I remember Prince Charles breaking his wrist, and somebody royal being born - must have been Eugenie or Beatrice.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 08/01/2021 19:00

Oh and lots of IRA bombings.

GlennRheeismyfavourite · 08/01/2021 19:01

Berlin Wall coming down - on CBBC news round!

LionLily · 08/01/2021 19:03

I can remember seeing news reports of the Vietnam War. I can still see the pictures in my mind now. And I remember Princess Anne marrying Mark Phillips.
My older sisters tell me I was awake and sitting in my high chair when man landed on the moon, but they might be winding me up. I know they all (4 of them) stayed up but I don't think mum would have let me.

Harvey Smith making a v sign and having his medal taken away.

Not quite sure why Grin

TeaSoakedDisasterMagnet · 08/01/2021 19:05

A vague recollection of Princess Diana’s death in August 97 because the morning cartoons weren’t on tv, but much more clear memories of the Kosovo War and then the Omagh bomb in 1998. I was about 9. I was horrified at seeing tanks rolling into Kosovo because we had just learned about WW1 at school and it had never occurred to me that wars still happened.

Sway19 · 08/01/2021 19:06

9/11

Miramour · 08/01/2021 19:07

A news flash on the radio announcing the sudden death of the prime minister. I was 5. At that moment I knew I wanted to be the one telling the news - and today I am.

FluffySocks75 · 08/01/2021 19:08

When someone (maybe posing as) a midwife/hv kidnapped a baby was maybe around 1990 ish

puppychaos · 08/01/2021 19:11

Madelyn Mccan going missing & Tony Blair losing power. Same year, I would have been 8.

puppychaos · 08/01/2021 19:13

Oh! I remember the Boxing Day tsunami, I would have just turned 6.

LovingLen · 08/01/2021 19:17

Aberfan, the DC must have been about my age

ProfMcGonigle · 08/01/2021 19:19

I remember Elvis dying when I was 7, the Yorkshire Ripper story when I was 8-ish and MT becoming first female PM when I was 9.

MiddleClassMother · 08/01/2021 19:20

Princess Diana's fatal car crash, 1997

LividLovely · 08/01/2021 19:20

Hillsborough.

Remember it being on tv with a particular babysitter.

Avondklok · 08/01/2021 19:23

Elvis dying is the first single news story I remember. Everyone was so shocked. I do remember other general stuff going on, the drought, IRA killings, 3 day week, Yorkshire Ripper etc. Next would be around 1980 when John Lennon was killed, London embassy siege and the Charles and Diana engagement etc. It's scary that was 40 years ago!

Bluesmartiesandpandapop · 08/01/2021 19:25
