1976 - Watching about strikes in the news

Rubbish piling up in the streets. No electricity in the evenings. Mum and Dad always worried.

TartanLassie · 08/01/2021 21:49

Also Elvis dying.

desperatelyseeking1 · 08/01/2021 21:53

Mine was the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster in 1986. That was horrific.

I was only little though and obsessed with animals and I remember my first question about it to my dad was 'did any dogs die?' BlushBlush

I didn't really grasp what had really happened or really what death actually was until much later

Allispretty · 08/01/2021 21:59

Dunblane...I was around 9 mainly remember because of how my mum reacted to it. I cannot even fathom something like this happening now and having my own dc.

Also remember 1997 election quite clearly (d:ream song instantly pops in my head) and of course princess Diana (same year I think) remember being woken by my Nan and grandad in utter shock listening to it on their bedroom radio!

Claudiawinklemansfringe · 08/01/2021 22:19

Princess Anne's wedding to Mark Phillips in 73, I was in Year 1 and had the day off school and remember watching it with my Mum! Also remember Nixon resigning in 74 when I was 6. And watching Abba win Eurovision the same year 😁 Some of the answers on this thread make me feel very old!

Silkiechickscat · 08/01/2021 22:26

Yes actually I remember the Challenger disaster and the boys making sick 7-up jokes about it at school which was earlier than other one.

Backtoblack1 · 08/01/2021 22:27

Charles and Diana engagement

drspouse · 08/01/2021 22:28

Nixon resigning. My mum told me it was important to watch it.

maadlady · 08/01/2021 22:32

John Lennon shot dead.

SandAndFog · 08/01/2021 22:32

Piper Alpha. I was 9, my dad was offshore and I remember watching the news with my worried mum

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 08/01/2021 22:37

The Falklands War. I think I just have been about 7.

Pralinelatte · 08/01/2021 22:38

Assassination of Kennedy in 1963. I was 3 years old, living in America and was very shaken by the open distress and shock of most of the adults around me. Affected me deeply.

feelingverylazytoday · 08/01/2021 22:39

The Aberfan disaster. We lived in a pit village at the time which made it seem even more scary.

tinkywinkyshandbag · 08/01/2021 22:39

Bin men strikes in the 1970s

merryhouse · 08/01/2021 22:43

Georgette Heyer dying. Big news in our house (I remember the older ones' reactions).

I'd have been nearly six. It was teatime.

Apart from that... I remember the Drought, and the Silver Jubilee, and the power cuts, and the firefighters' strike, but I remember them as happening rather than news.

Looking at Wikipedia, it appears to be the birth of Peter Phillips Blush

Then Carl Bridgewater, by which time I was helping my sister on her paper round. Delivering to single houses early in the morning. Lovely. There was one particular house I took against in this context - many years later I disclosed this to my family, and oldest sister said "oh they'd have been horrified to know that - they're lovely people!"

grisen · 08/01/2021 22:43

Glasgow Airport attack, we were on our way there.

woefulinsomniac · 08/01/2021 23:00

Diana's death
Sarah Payne
9/11

I bit spread out but they're the ones that stick in my mind from as a kid.

FurrySlipperBoots · 08/01/2021 23:09

@Burnthurst187 My parent's best friends drowned in that disaster. So sad.

DenisetheMenace · 08/01/2021 23:12

Aberfan. I was tiny at the time but I remember by osmosis, I think.

I can remember the moon landings personally though. I was dug out of bed to watch in black and white.

The death of Princess Diana on 31st August 1997.
Same. I would have been 6 and a half. I remember having a sleepover at my grandparents house. In the morning we went into their bed and ate breakfast in bed and watched the news and I remember it being on. Weird as I dont remember being in my grandparents bed, or even in their bedroom, at any other time!
