What an insulting idiot. Shame on him.

OP posts:

Ahem! Fio2- I am the scummyone on this site, ta very much.

Don't take the shouty loudy people to heart too much babe- it's seriously not worth it. I know I probably am one of them so should keep schtum but I hate to see you so upset. I guess we all have stuff that we think is sacred and important and sometimes we're going to hear/read opinions that challenge those dearly held beliefs. Sometimes hearing other people's views will make us think a bit and change a bit and sometimes it will hurt and anger us for no good purpose at all. GRRR to the paltroons who do the latter.

edam · 22/10/2004 14:27

well, you wouldn't believe that I write for my living given my use of 'possible/possibly' within two words of each other.
Yours in sisterhood ...

hmb · 22/10/2004 14:27

Nice use of the word, Paltroon. Ad we should use more often in everyday life

edam · 22/10/2004 14:28

oops, sorry for the hijack on such a serious thread everyone

ScummyMummy · 22/10/2004 14:29

I think paltroons may be feral, hmb.

i am confused as to what constitutes an outpouring of grief - as opposed to respect and sadness.

i find the argument ( as on questiontime last night posed by that daily mail tosser) that lots of other people have died there a non starter. like the argument which suggests out emotions should be lessened becuase the man was there to earn a wage for himself as opposed to charity worker and soldiers dying there right now. am finding it hard to explain but i dot feel its right to play down or dismiss one death becuase many other people have died. you can negate any argument by saying - how little is your problem compared to the hunger and suffering and torture of people in many nations. how valueless is one life?

you cannot negate the sadness that people felt when hearing of KB's death. is his life worth any more than anyone elses? no ofcourse not, and to take this as the implication is simply looking for an argument.

however many people watched the plight of one man night after night, his family struggling to save his life. i would be emotionless if i were not to feel sadness on hearing of his death.

would i travel to the nearest church to sign a book of condolence. no. but somepeople wanted to. that doesnt make them bad people. it doesn't constitute an outpouring of grief in my opinion, it consitutes sadness and respect.

hmb · 22/10/2004 14:31

Always

popsycal · 22/10/2004 14:33

excellent post custy

nasa · 22/10/2004 14:33

custardo - my sentiments exactly (and probably expressed more succinctly than by 15 other posts on this thread!)

nasa · 22/10/2004 14:33

that should be"...my 15 other posts" not by

Caligula · 22/10/2004 14:34

You're hijacking all over the place today Edam!

I don't think Boris is a poltroon, he just has the manner of one. Someone else has said it, but you don't get to be editor of the spectator if you're as much of a buffoon as he appears, however much money you've got.

I was going to speculate about what sex would be like with him, but perhaps that's a different thread.

nasa · 22/10/2004 14:36

caligula - err...can i ask why you were going to speculate about sex with BJ? do you like them big and blond?

Caligula · 22/10/2004 14:39

No!

But it came up the other day in a conversation, and someone claimed he would fall asleep half way through. Just wondered if anyone had any inside knowledge of this.

hmb · 22/10/2004 14:40

Please tell me the 'inside' comment wasn't deliberate

nasa · 22/10/2004 14:42

having sex with boris johnson "came up in conversation"..?!

Caligula · 22/10/2004 14:43

Eeeugh! Hadn't occurred to me HMB! Unfortunate phrasing there.

Caligula · 22/10/2004 14:45

I know I know! I have a sad life. It was because I realised I'm old enough to fancy politicians. REALLY sad. BJ wasn't one of them though (no really, he wasnt. No, really. Honest.

Honest.)

hmb · 22/10/2004 14:48

A very dear freind of mine once confessed that she had a dream once that she was shagging Alex Salmond (sp??), now that was wierd!

donnie · 22/10/2004 14:48

there does seem to be a real imbalance here though: why were there international tv crews camped out in Soham for weeks on end, when other child murders/equally horrifying events are barely covered in the press at all? IMO there is a vile tabloid tradition of every now and again turning something genuinely nasty into a sick and despicable tabloid 'n' telly pantomime which is what the Soham killings became. Perhaps the Kenneth Bigley murder was veering close to that level of intrusive, saturation media hype.I am not going to pass judgment on a situation where someone was killed so horribly but I do know that as long as people keep buying the red tops and so on this type of television pantomime will only get worse. Next thing you know it'll be live murders on Sky. And there'll be no shortage of viewers.

hmb · 22/10/2004 14:59

I don't like the media 'hype' that seems to happen so often in the awful times. I also think that the high level of media interest can be literaly fatal for some of the people involved. I understand that the French have stopped showing videos in news reports etc when their nationals are kidnapped, and just stick to reporting the facts.

If people have a spontaneous response that is one thing, but I do think that the media pick and choose who they think is 'worthy' and off they go. Classic case being Diana, who was deified by the media who, days before, had been calling her all sorts of things.

And then some people feel they have to respond in a particular way or be thought uncaring. Not sure if I have put this as well as I should.

donnie · 22/10/2004 15:16

personally I am repulsed by tabloid reporters and photographers which is why I am so happy Prince Harry punched one.German photographers tried to sell close up photographs of Princess Diana's corpse to the UK tabloids - I am amazed they had the sense to say no.I believe they were shown in ' Bild' magazine though ( a German publication).Al Jazeera tv regularly broadcasts the killings of hostages in Iraq and elsewhere (Daniel Pearl)which are filmed by the terrorist groups and kindly uploaded into the internet so we can download them for our delectation. I find this last fact ironic and almost amusing in a rather grim way.

lou33 · 22/10/2004 15:35

What's wrong with making a nest egg to retire to thailand, sounds great.

foxinsocks · 22/10/2004 16:17

In defence of the press (in a very small way), with the Soham murders, the press were drafted in to assist as originally it was a 'missing persons enquiry'. In this instance, as much press interest as possible was drafted in to get the maximum attention/appeal to the 'kidnappers'. It's then very difficult to tell them to p*ss off as the story starts to get more interesting. Also, you have to recognise what a unique (in a horrible way) case that was.

With the Bigley one, the family actually stated (I heard then on the radio in an interview) that they felt that whilst Ken was still ever-present on the news, the kidnappers would keep him alive. Looking back now, the kidnappers obviously always intended to kill him and it did happen that he was murdered as he drifted out of press attention but I'm sure that was coincidence.

As for gutter press, there must be an audience otherwise these people would go out of business. If we all stopped buying the crap they produce, then all this invasive stuff would stop.

Tinker · 22/10/2004 17:23

fantasia's post "A lot has been said about Hillsborough - anyone remember Heysel?" Explain your point then and answer popsycal's question?

fio - don't get upset.

The main time my brother felt scared at a football game was Liverpool v Roma in Rome. There, that progresses the argument a lot doesn't it? Not

Tinker · 22/10/2004 17:24

Has fantasia ever posted anywhere else?
