Madeleine McCann

Instead of starting lots of new posts about Madeleine, could I politely request that anyone who wants to post on the subject please post on this one thread? (N.B. Duplicate threads may be flamed hysterically.)

Please note that this thread is not to criticise Madeleine's parents or family, as this is not in the spirit of Mumsnet.

Please can I take the liberty to quote from this article:

"This is the real life of Kate and Gerry McCann, and it must now have become a place of agony beyond all understanding. Pity them, if you have any compassion at all, and demonstrate the minimum of grace: the ability to desist from judgment."

Er the film is a load of bollocks like the rest of the reports in the news papers (read Gerry's online diary on the Madeleine Mccann site) so no point in going over the whole film sinarion because it's not happening guys.

ladytophamhatt · 09/01/2008 13:43

but WHAT si there to actually discuss ELF?

nothing has changed, shes still missing but the are still suspects and the gutterpress papers are still selling thousands more per day because they put her photo on the front...

ELF1981 · 09/01/2008 13:44

I thought the film thing was odd (haven't read the paper today, just saw headlines on news) because there was the film by Ben Affleck (?) regarding a family who had their daughter snatched, which was removed from release due to what was happening with the McCann's. Though it would be double standards if they did!

wannaBe · 09/01/2008 13:49

the reason why it appears in the press day after day is because on days when she is on the front pages the newspaper sales go up signifficantly. Not sure why people are prepared to pay to read about it when all you have to do is type "madeleine Mccann" into google and read exactly what you could pay to read in one of the trashy tabloids.

But also the family are desperate for the publicity, because publicity brings money to the campaign which must be running out or at least due to run out in the not too distant future - I idon't imagine Clarrence mitchell is giving his services for free and the detective agency are reportedly being paid £50000 a month for six months so that's at least a 3rd of the fund gone. Without donation they simply can't sustain that kind of campaign indefinitely.

theBOD · 09/01/2008 13:54

would any already successful actor really touch this with a barge pole if they make a movie? i mean first of all it would make for a terrible movie. i mean what's the story line? family go on holiday, little girl gets kidnapped.....then what? there is no conclusion as of yet. the aftermath of the kidnapping will probably centre on some cluso-esque portugeese cop who is an evil man out to frame the mccanns.

NadineBaggott · 09/01/2008 13:56

a film?

what's to see, it's all been played out second by tawdry second!

wannaBe · 09/01/2008 13:57

the mccanns have denied there is going to be a movie.

I imagine that if Madeleine were ever found alive there would almost certainly be one, but with no conclusion there couldn't be surely. Plus I don't necessarily think that it would gain the family an awful lot of positive publicity =- turning their daughter's disappearance into a holleywood blockbuster, and surely even they, or their advisers would know that.

ladytophamhatt sorry for posting on the thread again but I didn't want you to think I was deliberately not answering your question, I had to get back to work.

I dont think there is anything major to discuss, I'm not saying that it is right to discuss it but I can see WHY. I watch Breakfast in the mornings, and one of the first things I heard this morning was that this was supposed to be made into a film, which actually did make me want to discuss it in a "no way, how crazy is that" kind of fashion. At work, walking past the papers in the restaurant with a friend, my friend sees the headlines and passes comment. I dont see anything wrong with this. No, nothing has happened, she has not been found, but so long as the McCanns want to keep this in the press (which they seemingly do as they believe the more it is, the more likely it will be that somebody will find her) then people will pass comment.

Its like being told not to talk about ducks. Nothing has happened with the ducks, but if it is printed in the papers daily a picture of a little fluffy duck, somebody is going to talk about the duck. Human nature imo!

ScoobyDoo · 19/01/2008 22:06

Oh dear god a new sketch of a man here

wannaBe · 21/01/2008 10:09

. this hasn't been released by the police has it? but by a tourist and a police artist has helped make an impression. Is it right that they start releasing sketches of people and that clarrence mitchell goes on the news saying "we believe this man has a link to Madeleine" wtf! Let's call everyone suspects then shall we

and how much of a coincidence is it that a week after a little girl went missing in spain, the mccanns are back on the front page - best not take the spotlight off them ey .

Furball · 21/01/2008 10:18

where has this lady been with this info for 8 months? Quite bizarre that suddenly she remembers a man acting strangely.

Ubergeekian · 21/01/2008 14:44

I just wish the McCann's team could get their story straight. First of all it was a north African looking bloke who done it (and they had witnesses), then it was Robert Murat who done it (and they had witnesses), then it was Robert Murat's girlfriend who done it, in North Africa (and they had witnesses). Now someone has just "remembered" that she saw someone behaving wierdly - good heavens, he was walking alone on the beach in the rain - and so suddenly we are supposed to believe that he was involved.

I just wish they would get their story straight.

noddyholder · 21/01/2008 14:53

I am amazed that if they are saying it is the man jane tanner saw that she didn't see his spectacular moustache but could identify the pattern on the pyjamas as madeleines.? all v fishy

MrsGuyOfGisbourne · 23/01/2008 10:00

Ubergeekian and Noddyh - well said.

meandboys · 23/01/2008 11:23

I think the sketch has a resemblance to the father of the little girl that someone thought was maddy!

Or is it just me?

SmartArse · 23/01/2008 11:26

I think it looks like the suspect in Johnny English.

NotABanana · 27/04/2008 13:41

Just in case anyone wants to listen, Radio 4 currently have a programme about the case on now.

kerryk · 28/04/2008 15:59

think this will be in the news even more with the 1st anniversary this weekend.

they had some expert (of some sort) on gmtv this morning giving his opinion, he seemed pretty sure that he knew what had happened, only wish there was proof to give her family some kind of closure, one way or another.

crackinggoodegg · 28/04/2008 16:05

Whatever happened, it's very sad that there are no answers a year on, never thought it would get to this point.

CrushWithEyeliner · 28/04/2008 16:56

So sad - I honestly can't believe it has been a year. My heart goes out to Kate and Gerry, what they have gone through.

wannaBe · 28/04/2008 17:19

well I hope that now the one year anniversary is upon us this will disappear out of the news. After all there's nothing to say really is there? And there are two other children in this who deserve a normal life.

NotABanana · 28/04/2008 17:22

The twins are now 3, the same as Madeleine when she went missing.

I have read today they ring on their toy phones to try and find her.

Kate and Gerry are considering a book deal of their year to raise funds for the Madeliene Fund. There is talk that it will raise £1million.

I can't help feeling that if this had happened in the UK it would have been handled differently. JMO.

That poor child. My DD saw her picture on the front page of a paper and she asked why she was on the paper.

wannaBe · 28/04/2008 17:33

they ring on their toy phones to try and find her? would they even still remember her? I don't think they were even quite two when she went missing were they? and a year is a long time in such a young child's life - obviously they would know who Madeleine is from photos and their parents talking but all this talk of the twins asking father Christmas to bring Madeleine home/putting plates of food out for her/ringing on their phones to find her just sounds like media talk to me.

And who on earth is going to buy a book? What could anyone possibly write in a book that hasn't already been written to death in the media? Child goes missing, parents make plea for child's return, man is suspected, parents are suspected, parents set up fund, people come out in sympathy, and then what?
