Instead of starting lots of new posts about Madeleine, could I politely request that anyone who wants to post on the subject please post on this one thread? (N.B. Duplicate threads may be flamed hysterically.)

Please note that this thread is not to criticise Madeleine's parents or family, as this is not in the spirit of Mumsnet.

Please can I take the liberty to quote from this article:

"This is the real life of Kate and Gerry McCann, and it must now have become a place of agony beyond all understanding. Pity them, if you have any compassion at all, and demonstrate the minimum of grace: the ability to desist from judgment."

rbj49703 - must have been a bit unnerving, but in a way it's good that someone had the balls to have a proper look, rather than just suspecting and walking away. If she's out there somewhere it's only by people doing that sort of thing that she will be found I suppose.

of course the stories/times aren't going to tally entirely. when you do something one day, the next day can you remember the exact time you did something at? no, you remember a rough approximate time.

i can't understand why they left the door unlocked unless it wasn't one of those doors where if its locked on the outside its also locked on the inside and they were worried about them not being able to get out in a fire or something.

i would still use a baby listening service now - although not once my ds was out of a cot cos i would be scared of him going wondering.

We went to Praja d L. and left our 15-month olf son asleep in his room, two storeys above us, while we ate a quick meal. We had a baby monitor and every 15 minutes one of us would check on him. The balcony and room doors were locked.

This was 11 years ago now. Lots of people did that then. Nobody lost a child. Nobody threatened to call Social Services.

Would I have left the building? Would I have left the door to our room unlocked? Probably not.

We've left both children asleep in their tyrolean hotel room while we grabbed a quick drink in the bar (having eaten with the children). Again, locked door and balcony and a baby monitor with us.

I suppose I wouldn't do it again because of the very unpleasant worry that people would report us--not because I have any doubt that were taking a carefully-calibrated risk which was unlikely to lead to any harm occuring to our children.

Because of the OP:
