Madeleine McCann

Instead of starting lots of new posts about Madeleine, could I politely request that anyone who wants to post on the subject please post on this one thread? (N.B. Duplicate threads may be flamed hysterically.)

Please note that this thread is not to criticise Madeleine's parents or family, as this is not in the spirit of Mumsnet.

Please can I take the liberty to quote from this article:

"This is the real life of Kate and Gerry McCann, and it must now have become a place of agony beyond all understanding. Pity them, if you have any compassion at all, and demonstrate the minimum of grace: the ability to desist from judgment."

fortune cookie - i agree. if most of us had the time to write diaries they'd say similar things. that's half the point of MN in the first place, it's somewhere we can all go and vent about how the kids are driving us crazy. takes the place of a diary in some ways. it'd have to be pretty out-there to indicate guilt in itself.

katierocket · 14/09/2007 13:25

persephonesnape - how truly grim your post is

wannaBe · 14/09/2007 13:25

but doesn't this raise a valid, if scary point? imagine that, god forbid, someone on here had a similar experience and their child came to some harm. Would that mean that anything they wrote on mn, even under a namechange could/would be used in evidence?

fortunecookie · 14/09/2007 13:31

oh God save us!

If we can't vent here, where the f"ck can we vent??

Also, aren't the McCanns doctors? This crap about Calpol is just that - crap. There are tons of ways to knock someone (esp. kids) out & as a doc, you'd know about them.

LIZS · 14/09/2007 13:32

fortunecookie have they found the missing Swiss girl yet

beansprout · 14/09/2007 13:34

"Mother of 3 young children in finding it hard to manage shocker!!"

Hmmm, hardly front page news now is it?

compo · 14/09/2007 13:35

"This crap about Calpol is just that - crap."

How the feck do you know?
Were you there?

PandaG · 14/09/2007 13:39

media coverage being discussed on R4 now.

fortunecookie · 14/09/2007 13:39

No they haven't. Horrible. Dd, who is now 7, is looking nervously behind her every time she plays outside. She also knows about Madeleine & asks me from time to time if "they've found her yet".

It's impossible to explain to her why anyone would wish to harm a child. I can't imagine that impulse myself but of course I know it exists.

LIZS · 14/09/2007 13:40

but could n't any partial dna samples on which they might have found any sedative traces not belong to one of the parents ? Perhaps they've need sleeping pills or tranquilisers to help them through the last few months, that would hardly be a shock now would it

fortunecookie · 14/09/2007 13:41

No but you have to give a hell of alot of Calpol to put your kid to sleep. As a doctor you'd presumably have "better ways" of putting your kid to sleep if that was your intention.

What's your problem, compo? You looking to add fuel to the fire of the Calpol theory?

LIZS · 14/09/2007 13:43

fc . Has the media there contrasted the 2 cases or just buried the Swiss one ?

LizaRose · 14/09/2007 13:46

Paracetamol kills by liver failure. It is not a sedative. And there is no way anyone could detect sedative traces on a DNA sample.

wannaBe · 14/09/2007 13:50

but fc the reality is that if Kate Mccann was a mn'er, or a contributor to any other parenting forum for that matter, and had posted weeks before that "I'm finding it really hard to cope with my three children", then details of those postings would almost certainly have appeared in the portuguese media by now.

No-one is saying people shouldn't be allowed to vent, what I was saying is that it's scary to think that anything you post on here isn't really private to you as it could be accessed and traced back to you if it had to be.

As for the calpol theory, I don't think anyone said it was calpol did they? they said it was sedatives. And actually the sedative "theory" has been around for months, in fact i read somewhere, and can't remember wherw now, but i did read that one of the family had mentioned that Madeleine had been sedated in the past because she was a sleepwalker.

That's not to say she was sedated on the night in question, but just because it's written doesn't make it "crap", we don't know.

Pennies · 14/09/2007 13:54

To give a Calpol overdose would mean that a very significant quantity would have to be ingested (more than a bottle, I believe) and even then it would take a few days for it to take effect and the first probable symptom would be jaundice as the liver started to fail. This is simply not a plausible suggestion. Also Calpol is not a sedative so they would not have administered it for that effect anyway.

IMO if her parents had anything at all to do with her alledged death then I can only guess that it may have been via horseplay that went wrong, but even that seems ridiculous to me as I'm sure they would have sought help regardless of the severity of any injury.

I can't believe they did it and I feel desperately sorry for them, and for Maeleine and for the twins.

Pennies · 14/09/2007 13:56

and for Madeleine. Sorry typo.

HorribleHorace · 14/09/2007 14:00

this is getting so bloody far fetched. You just couldn't make it up (although it seems the Portugese may be )

So now what are they saying? That 25 days later the McCanns (and someone else) transported the body, then boarded a yacht and took it out to sea?

What with the media watching their every move?

what a nightmare. it just seems never ending for them....

HorribleHorace · 14/09/2007 14:01

the papers today are reporting large quantaties of adult sedatives

dinny · 14/09/2007 14:02

IF they had anything to do with it (which I just don NOT believe) WHY would they have gone to all these lengths to cover it up???

it's all rubbish, the poor people.

wannaBe · 14/09/2007 14:03

but where does it say that she was given a calpol overdose? It doesn't, Calpol is just what's been suggested by people on here. If you read the papers it says that it was traces of sleeping pills.

HorribleHorace · 14/09/2007 14:05

25 days later - weren't their family over there with them then? and I'm sure their friends had gone home.

They couldn't have just nipped out and dumped a 25 day old body - i'm sorry but it's absurd.

These are (I believe) loving, devoted parents. If they had had to deal with something like disposing of their child's body i would think they would be deeply traumatised by it tbh.

I will never believe they have done this

wannaBe · 14/09/2007 14:06

the theories are totally far fetched.

But I also find it hard to see how the police could be setting them up, after all, it was brittish police that did the phorensics, so that's an international setup which is highly unlikely. also, without a body there's next to no chance of a conviction, so setting up the parents in this way would achieve nothing.

tiredemma · 14/09/2007 14:07

IMO- the police dont have a clue and it works to their advantage that there isnt a body ( I bloody hate saying that)- because they can come up with these far fetched allegations and get away with it.

How on earth the McCanns did all that they are being accused of, while having the worlds media following them beggars belief-

I read somewhere the other day ( probably in the sun ) that one of the theories was that they buried her under some roadworks for a while , then transferred her in the car to wherever ( a bloody YACHT???)

If this wasnt so bloody gutwrenchingly sad, you would laugh at the shocking speculations here.

Pennies · 14/09/2007 14:08

I only referred to the Calpol to point out that I felt that anyone here who considered it to be the "weapon" that it couldn't be.
