Madeleine McCann

Instead of starting lots of new posts about Madeleine, could I politely request that anyone who wants to post on the subject please post on this one thread? (N.B. Duplicate threads may be flamed hysterically.)

Please note that this thread is not to criticise Madeleine's parents or family, as this is not in the spirit of Mumsnet.

Please can I take the liberty to quote from this article:

"This is the real life of Kate and Gerry McCann, and it must now have become a place of agony beyond all understanding. Pity them, if you have any compassion at all, and demonstrate the minimum of grace: the ability to desist from judgment."

prettybird - yes I do believe the risk has increased; as far as child abuse goes it's always been with us but generally within families or extended families or the rarer cases of opportunistic paedophiles, but never before internationally organised child abuse networks and never so much at the forefront of public consciousness. I think anyone who's in any way psychologically predisposed (for whatever reason) to either steal or abuse a child is more likely to go through with it given the amount of 'encouragement' there is now (for want of a better word); the amount of pornography out there and the regularity of media stories relating to child abuse must surely act as a catalyst or even some kind of sick validation for people with those tendencies. Kind of in the same way as ordinary porn sends really, really poor messages about female sexuality to the male population in general that then become acceptable through familiarity.

Bubble99 · 13/09/2007 19:41

Good Post, Tamz. I agree.

I also believe that with fewer extended families living close to each other, there is less chance of a family member 'keeping an eye on' a person who may be a risk to children.

I have avoided these threads cause for so long now ive thought they were guilty am glad im not the only one, although I really hope im proved wrong cause i hate to think that little girl is not alive

prettybird · 14/09/2007 08:50

We'll just have to agree to differ then on our assessment of risk. Just goes to show that we all make different parenting decisions

totaleclipse · 14/09/2007 10:46

news.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,91210-1283987,00.html

Most of the British Authorities seem to think something is not right, they all say the same thing, it just does'nt add up, I also read that the portuguese police turned down help with the investigation from Scotland Yard a few weeks back

imaginaryfriend · 14/09/2007 10:47

LV I totally disagree with you. It is virtually impossible to imagine they are guilty. It's actually quite depressing to think anyone would even think that.

Pedanticandproud · 14/09/2007 10:55

I agree with Imaginary Friend

NadineBaggott · 14/09/2007 11:24

"Mr Williams-Thomas believes that because of the huge doubts over the convictions, whoever abducted Joana is more than likely to be behind Madeleine's disappearance"

Er, why exactly?

jenk1 · 14/09/2007 11:39

think he means cos portugal has such a low rate of abductions and the place that the other girl was abducted from is near to praia de luz, also one of the senior investigating officers on the other case is under investigation for beating a confession out of the other girls mother, he is also senior on madeleines investigation.

NadineBaggott · 14/09/2007 11:40

well its still a GIANT leap in logic if you ask me.

NadineBaggott · 14/09/2007 11:41

and is more speculative than anything I've read on here!

TinyGang · 14/09/2007 11:46

The police are concentrating solely on the McCanns now then?

wannaBe · 14/09/2007 11:47

Joana's mother was convicted of her murder, and despite the investigations into her questining etc the conviction has not been overturned.

Also there was info about this in the portuguese press recently according to tugamommy saying that the uncle had admitted to dismembering Joana's body and driving it over the border to spain.

so imo no connection at all.

bananaknickers · 14/09/2007 12:08

Anyone else think this new ITV drama being shown on Wednesday is in poor taste? here

persephonesnape · 14/09/2007 12:10

i like how we can quote sky news when it's 'good' news, but it's a source of derision when it's things we don't like to hear. it's still skynews, still a load of baloney.

I'm sticking to the bbc for my facts and the daily mail for my voyeuristic gossip fuel with no basis in fact.

please don't click this link if you feel sensitive about madeleine, because it's body disposal speculation ( i could word this better, but i can't find the words, iyswim)

CountessScabula · 14/09/2007 12:57

oh how repellent
That you find the need for voyeuristic gossip fuel

Hulababy · 14/09/2007 13:03

"my voyeuristic gossip fuel with no basis in fact. "

Why would you want to go down that road anyway?

imaginaryfriend · 14/09/2007 13:04

That Daily Mail article is just revolting. I never read that paper and now I never will again. Horrible speculation of the most hurtful kind. Every word they use insinuates something and the thought that Kate McCann's diary may be made public property is disgusting. How the McCann's are surviving this is beyond belief.

fortunecookie · 14/09/2007 13:11

I read in the Swiss press this morning that, according to the Portuguese press, an "enormous interest" is being taken in Kate McCann's personal journal. A few days before Madeleine disappeared, Kate McCann alledgedly wrote that she was having trouble coping with her children's behavior, that her husband wasn't giving her enough help & support, that she was at the end of her tether. This is not a direct quote, btw!

What sort of evidence is that? As parents, we've all felt this way from time to time. It sickens me that such thoughts could be used as evidence against her!

Poor Kate McCann. This is a living hell for her.

expatinscotland · 14/09/2007 13:15

FFTV

imaginaryfriend · 14/09/2007 13:16

FFTV?

compo · 14/09/2007 13:17

why have people on here in the past been saying they used sedatives before they went out? Apparently that's not true at all , all they had in the apartment was calpol according to the BBC news today

wannaBe · 14/09/2007 13:19

and people wonder why the dm is so hated.

and finding it difficult to cope/not being supported, you could take half the relationship/parenting threads off these boards and read the same, but doesn't mean that they're all capable of killing their children does it?
