This thread is so cathartic. I hate the Daily Mail with a passion for pretty much all of the reasons set out in the thread.

Anyone else prepared to confess to judging people who read it?

And like LL I'm a Telegraph reader and I still think the Daily Mail is a disgrace. I've seen plenty of it as my mum used to buy it and it's read a lot on commuter trains.
I used to read the Independent until its staff was slashed to ribbons

Desiderata · 11/09/2007 13:29

Lol @ finding the DM 'scary.'

.. and you haven't burst anything, peachy! I don't need the protection of a bubble to get me through the day.

RubySlippers · 11/09/2007 13:29

my in-laws love the DM
my FIL is slightly to the right of Attila the Hun
we have had some corking arguments

i am a guardian/independent reader working in the voluntary sector

I think the OP just lit the blue touch paper and stood back...

Peachy · 11/09/2007 13:30

It's the attitudes it generates that's scary, there's so much bias in the rag. And it seems to fall foul of the most absic premises- for example cant distinguish between an economic migrant and an asylum seeker.

Dinosaur · 11/09/2007 13:31

sorry lisalisa

obviously as a City lawyer you are an intelligent person (I would say that wouldn't I) but I am, honestly, surprised that you can bear to read the DM

I just hate it so much, I'm afraid.

lisalisa - im not sure having a law degree disqualifies you from lacking intelligence in some quarters....it just means you can be a solicitor.

Probably not for Human Rights issues though

daily mail is for the lazy minded. you could have an enormous iq and still choose to read heat magazine or whatever. it is a kind of standby mode. i used to watch neighbours which is a kind of subliminal dailymail but i found it strangely soothing. thankfully i have weaned myself.

OrmIrian · 11/09/2007 13:32

'Twas meant to be a joke lisa. I don't think that the Times is a particularly worthy organ either if that makes you feel any better. And I don't read the Guardian very often as DH takes the pee when I do.

I hate the politics of the DM and it distresses me beyond anything when I find a copy in the house of a friend. Doesn't stop them being a friend, just makes me want to prostrate myself on the ground before them and beg and plead with them to give up the filthy habit.... I don't. Of course

Piggy · 11/09/2007 13:32

You apear to be an intelligent, articulate woman lisalisa. Why oh why do you read such complete and utter shite? Doesn't it rile you when you read the dross that it passes for news? Don't the bigoted columnists annoy you? Doesn't the dismal editorial content depress you? I just don't understand why anyone with half a brain would buy it.

The DM is fine! A great read, apart from the bits that are...

xenophobic, NIMBYist
mysogenistic
reactionary

(not much left then )

I gave up reading papers long ago for any current affairs or news. Far too polarised. I prefer to make my own mind up rather than believe something is true because It Must Be, I Read It In The Paper.

Hathor · 11/09/2007 13:33

...whizz BOOM!

Desiderata · 11/09/2007 13:33

.. and The Grauniad is for the simple-minded.

You're all a bunch of lily-livered lefty loons with bad complexions and shapeless clothing ...

He he he he he

OrmIrian · 11/09/2007 13:34

Yep. That's about it desi!

Piggy · 11/09/2007 13:35

LL - I adore the Week. I've been getting it for a couple of years now and it's my favourite publication of all time. I read every single article and enjoy it enormously. I recommend it to all my friends!

.....I actually welcome comments from the opposite side of the fence and have the intelligence and independance to extract what I will from those reports and leave the rest......

That's fine, trouble is, there are too many DM readers that lack that capability.
