How do you start that converstaion? "Look, you know I paid for golf last week and you said you'd pay me back....".

Dellgirl - "far less far fetched" brilliant

It definitely seems the friends were complicit. Otherwise why lie about Murat?

kentgirl73 · 08/09/2007 16:31

and why have the friends lied?

PSCMUM · 08/09/2007 16:31

wow. dellgirl and wannabe, you are on fire with your excellent, well thought out water tight theories, which are so much more likely than that a child was abducted. Children are NEVER abducted, but people kill their children accidentally then get their mates to hide the body while they finish off their dinner and 14 bottles of wine while they decide what to do.
Just a teeny problem - weren't they on telly that night - i seem to remeber it being dark, Kate standing there looking awful, and the Mark Warner man announcing that she was missing - the did not look like people who'd drunk 14 bottles of wine, they looked like people whose daughter was missing and who were in shock. actuakly scrap that, I can't be arsed to read the torrent of 'well, I look exactly like that when I am drunk actually, but when I have just lost my children, I generally go for more of an 'in mourning' look - black veil, smelling salts' etc etc

So was it Gerry's mystery friend who put the body in the suitcase? I can't keep up.

As for DNA evidence not being foolproof - yeah, that was OJ Simpson's argument.

That and that the police were corrupt.

haychee · 08/09/2007 16:32

Maybe friends did see murat but that doesnt make the mccanns innocent.

Quite possible they could be involved in some way, unlikey but possible all the same.

beansprout · 08/09/2007 16:32

This makes some of the longer standing conspiracy theories (Diana, moon landings, JFK, 9/11) look like the plots of Daisy the Duck.

Amazing (and more than a bit worrying) that adults are happy to believe this sort of nasty, lurid speculation which says far, far more about them than it does about the McCanns and their friends.

beansprout · 08/09/2007 16:33

lol at PSCMUM!

bobbysmum07 · 08/09/2007 16:34

Kentgirl73 - that's what I can't work out. Unless they were all drugging heir kids. Or worse.

PSCMUM · 08/09/2007 16:34

Malory towers - spot on! you are making me laugh my head off.

Wannabe and Dellgirl - have you considered the involvement of the supernatural at all?

bobbysmum07 · 08/09/2007 16:35

Funny that - I would put the police corruption stuff on a par with the moon landing conspiracy theories.

ragdollyanna · 08/09/2007 16:35

I dont think we will ever find out what happened, nor will poor Maddie be found (I think if she was going to be found it would have happened by now - one way or the other).

It will be another Ben Needham and Janette Tate case.

Very sad.

LittleBella · 08/09/2007 16:35

And your point that OJ Simpson's lawyers relied on DNA evidence not being foolproof means what Bobbysmum?

That it is?

Experts disagree with you I'm afraid

LittleBella · 08/09/2007 16:37

And as for police corruption being on a par with moon landings -

so er, you are now claiming that police corruption is a total fantasy? That it never happens? That it is inconceivable?

Even the police don't claim that!

beansprout · 08/09/2007 16:38

Don't forget that Bobby's dad was a copper so she has special insights into both how the police work (perfectly) and human nature (deeply flawed, especially if you make the accusation yourself).

bobbysmum - people did actually land on the moon and the police actually are corrupt. I am glad you have managed to see the light.

Mayeb as your dad is an ex police officer you know this already, but there is an entire organisation set up to inveitgate problems, including corruption, with the police - the IPCC. It inveistgated the police looking into Stephen Lawrence's murder, police who take bribes from criminals, police who beat/bribe/threaten confessions out of innocent people etc etc. Its staff are very busy.
SOme police are corrupt, its just a fact of life. You only need to look at cases like the Brimingham six and Guildford 4 to see awful and well established exmaples of serious police corruption.

bobbysmum07 · 08/09/2007 16:39

LB - I think it is pretty improbable that the British and Portugese police forces have conspired to frame the McCanns. One could even call it ludicrous.

dellgirl13 · 08/09/2007 16:39

not knowing statistics but yes there have been more parents killing there children in the past year than there have been stranger related abductions. in fact i have know /parents three children killed by a parent and no abductions.

totaleclipse · 08/09/2007 16:40

I think if the parents had anything to do with this, they would have got away with it by now, they are the ones who have pushed and pushed the story into the limelight, putting police under extra pressure, raised worldwide awareness etc etc, if guilty they would have played along for a while, and let the story slip from the media attention more easily, they would have left portugal by now, be at home, while Madeleine was classed as just another missing child. I expect if as much focus and awarness was put into the Ben Needham case all those years ago, his mother too would of at some point been under suspicion, if they were unable to trace him.

Yes I agree with you on that one. I think it highly improbably that the british and portugues police have colluded in wanting to frame the McCann's, I don't see a motive there.
