I was watching the news last night re Kate McCanns requestioning by the Portuguese Police. I have updated on the events this morning and it appears she will be declared as a SUSPECT today. Im shocked about this, what do you all think? Surely she didnt have anything to do with it?

will the milliion or so punds they got to help find their kid now be used for her defence if charged?

LaCerbiatta · 07/09/2007 14:07

No PSCMUM, they didn't give the wrong description, they simply translated wrong, in their kindness to issue statements in a foreign language. The portuguese description was correct and it should be the important one, surely, the english statement was just to satisfy the british media.
When would you see the british police even say a word in a foreign language? Never ever in a million years!
You stuck up brits really drive me mad sometimes!

CountessDracula · 07/09/2007 14:07

nicely put cod and very precise

NadineBaggott · 07/09/2007 14:10

"They'll never find the real murderer if they carry on like this"

oh has she definitely been murdered?

SueBaroo · 07/09/2007 14:10

tugamommy, agreed. The whole criticism of the police reeks of 'bloody Johnny Foreigner' style pompousness.

MrsMarvel · 07/09/2007 14:10

Also heard on R4 that the portuguese law doesn't distinguish between suspicion of crime and being charged with crime.

HorseyWoman · 07/09/2007 14:11

Kate has been named a formal suspect and is still being questioned. Her lawyer has warned her she may be charged soon and her SIL has given a statement saying as much. They are saying 'accidental death', although no one ACTUALLY knows. It's all speculation and we're all discussing the hows, whys and what-fors. What I do know, though, is that no one here even knows 100% what is going on today in Portimao, never mind what went on on 3rd May.

MrsMarvel · 07/09/2007 14:11

Sorry nadinebaggot I probably meant abductor.

LaCerbiatta · 07/09/2007 14:12

Thank you SueBaroo!

noddyholder · 07/09/2007 14:12

I don't think there is a man to come forward I would think if this is true some of their friends may be implicated too in helping them cover it up.That is bad enough but to set up a campaign and dupe the public out of millions is also shocking

McEdam · 07/09/2007 14:12

I don't think the Portugese police are above criticism just because they are Portugese. People have asked why they didn't search the apartment thoroughly at the time, why they didn't alert the borders, etc. etc. etc. Reasonable questions. The Portugese police suggested that their methods were less advanced than the UK in this area because child abuction is so rare there, which turned out to be less than true.

HorseyWoman · 07/09/2007 14:12

I am one Brit who actually does not see what the Portuguese police have done wrong, here. If not courting the media is a crime then sure they are guilty. They're just doing their jobs rather than keeping the mass media and the public informed.

HorseyWoman · 07/09/2007 14:14

Yes, Mrs Marvel, I remember when Murat was an arguida: they said that unlike here, people can be charged there and then let go and nothing further done; whereas here, being charged means that there's no going back.

HorseyWoman · 07/09/2007 14:14

Or something.

LaCerbiatta · 07/09/2007 14:15

Well McEdam, where did you get that information that child abduction in Portugal is after all not rare? Did you know that the number of children disappearing in Portugal per year is 500 (including ruanways). Do you know what that figure is in the UK? 150000!! I would say child crime IS rare in comparison

Have you read this?

forsale · 07/09/2007 14:15

wasnt one of the detectives allegedly involved somehow with an aswsault on another mother-of--missing-child-presumed-dead-and-then-jailed? Then again look at our own Serious Crime Squad

MrsMarvel · 07/09/2007 14:15

"no one here even knows 100% what is going on today in Portimao, never mind what went on on 3rd May" (and that's including Portuguese police)

LaCerbiatta · 07/09/2007 14:17

And I'm portuguese and don't think the portuguese police are above criticsm. They have done many things wrong in the beginning of the investigation due to lack of experience. But to call them clowns and say they're totall incompetent and untrustworthy is totally out of order!

HorseyWoman · 07/09/2007 14:18

I do agree with you, tugamommy, but I do have to interject here and say that the population of Portugal is 1/6 of that in the UK.

expatinscotland · 07/09/2007 14:18

For anyone who's interested, I bought my mother a lovely whisky water jug for her Christmas and scoffed two sausage rolls from Gregg's for lunch.

It was a truly lovely day to be out and if you've got any ideas on a nice pressie for my dad for Xmas I'd much appreciate them.

lilibet · 07/09/2007 14:19

How old is he expat?

And what does he like to do?
