I was watching the news last night re Kate McCanns requestioning by the Portuguese Police. I have updated on the events this morning and it appears she will be declared as a SUSPECT today. Im shocked about this, what do you all think? Surely she didnt have anything to do with it?

No you don't have to be charged with anything to be "arguido". It is formally..under suspicion... god knows what the equivalent is in English - if there is one.

Arguido status has caused some concern in this country... it is often argued that the Police chuck "arguido" status at practically anyone - to make their job easier... they then pass the arguido and their investigation over to the Prosecutors office... who then has the decision of whether to charge them or not. I don't know if that's true or not but dh says that half the country is an arguido in something.

Nevertheless Portugal is shocked, and very concerned. The anchor on the specially extended news tonight was asking her "experts" whether this was really the right thing to do to a woman whom everybody believes is an innocent mother who has lost her child. There is also some concern over the amount of time Kate M was questioned (16 hours over two days). This is shortly to change so no-one can be questioned for more than 2 hours consecutively.

What is superstition to you is reality to someone else, madamez. I'd expect someone of your intelligence to know that.

I think that the Portugeuese police are a bunch of fucking buffalos and quite frankly are trying to close this case, by any means possible. We may never know the means, but if the parents are put in jail, then I suppose that's what the Portugeuese police want.

Expat, at the start of this thread you were saying about the Susan Smith case and how it is quite conceivable that the McCanns were responsible. Why the change of heart? Or maybe you're just exploring both sides, as I have done.

For what it's worth, I don't agree that we can assume they are guilty based on how they grieve, just like you don't expat. Who has the rules on how a parent grieves? And also, don't know about anyone else, but in those initial days when the McCanns were giving statements, Kate did look very distressed and her breathing was awkward. But I guess we see what we choose to and interpret them any way we choose Why she was distressed we don't know - we are not the police and don't have the hard facts and evidence, which is why I am saying that we are in no position to judge if the PJ are doing their job properly; we can't say whether Kate and Gerry did or didn't hurt/kill Madeleine.
