ffs....these people. Putting bleach in contact lens solution??!! SO, it's Ok to maim innocent people using a product that the have nothing to do woith the manufacture of, but not to hurt a hamster in the name of medical science?

I know this is very controversial, and I think that unnecessary testing on animals for cosmetics etc should all be banned, but woud I rather a hamster died in order to create a treatment, than my child died because there was no cure??

[ducks below parapet and waits to get shot at]

Oh come on though expat - monkeys are bad but clowns are far worse

Oooh I hate clowns. Can there be anyone who likes them?

snowleopard · 31/08/2007 15:59

Hey the perfect solution - test drugs on clowns!

expatinscotland · 31/08/2007 16:00

I run the opposite direction from clowns, snow.

I will not go to a circus because it might have clowns.

DD1 sees them on TV and leaves the room.

I was tempted to kick a monkey in Nepal once, but I didn't want to get in trouble with the law, if there is one against kicking those horrible monkeys.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 31/08/2007 16:07

Cmon Snowleopard, d'you really think it would be scientific to test on clowns and then extrapolate from that to the general population? Surely clowns have all sorts of differences in their DNA

expatinscotland · 31/08/2007 16:09

Kathy is right, clowns aren't really practical.

So it should be monkeys.

saltire · 31/08/2007 16:09

Soapsy, define Military police!

expatinscotland · 31/08/2007 16:10

No, definitely the furry critter type monkey.

saltire · 31/08/2007 16:13

But not gorillas, because I do like them - but I see where you are coming from with the monkeys > they give me the heebies as well. Like birds do!

expatinscotland · 31/08/2007 16:14

I like gorillas. They are cool.

That's all agreed then! Experiments for monkeys and baboons!

Chirpygirl · 31/08/2007 17:14

Oy, leave birds alone!!
I have to wholeheartedly agree on the testing on clowns thing, I would do it for free...as long as they were strapped down..and gagged.....

Soapsy · 31/08/2007 18:13

Saltire - Royal Military Police. More commonly known as monkeys. I used to go out with one, a prime candidate for drug testing if ever I knew one.

saltire · 31/08/2007 18:21

Oh well that's ok then if you meant the ARMY royal military police.
I thought for an awful minute you were generalising about the Police in all branches of the Armed Forces

Whooosh · 31/08/2007 18:45

these people are great

MynamesMikeIswimlikeafish · 31/08/2007 18:48

I've been on the receiving end of verbal abuse and threats from animal rights activists. Just for working for a bank that funded Huntington Life Sciences. It was awful, I was scared to death and after she'd finished yelling a cm from my nose she started on the 5 year old daughter of a woman in the queue. She was the vilest woman I have ever met.

They seem to believe that frightening people will make them change their views. They need to rethink their tactics.

Roskva · 31/08/2007 19:02

People like that make me really mad .

lucyellensmum · 31/08/2007 21:04

Kerrymum, you are blatantly WRONG about rabbits not producing tears. I do understand that the propoganda produced by anti vivisection groups is emotive and bound to make people want to vomit. But it is biased and misleading, often simply incorrect.

I have actually been a member of a peaceful animal rights group in my rebellious past. However the group disbanded as it did not want to be associated with the lunatic thugs who basically use animals to justify their violent tendencies. I was anti vivisection, but i grew up and reaslised, its not very nice, id rather it didnt happen but it is absolutely necessary.

Research on animals, in this country at least, is tightly legislated and the animals welfare is paramount. I am not going to be niave enough to think there is no suffering and i would rather it didnt have to happen. But it does. As simple as that, we would still be living in fear of plague type illnesses and the flu would be wiping out communities if it wasnt for animal testing.

So i suppose then kerrys mum that you are vegan? I know someone who left a career in agriculture to work in research labs as she felt the animal welfare was much better in that environment. So of course, you woudlnt be eating meat or dairy products. I guess you dont wear makeup or use cleaning products, washing up liquid, washing powder? Do you wear leather shoes? hmm, do you give your children calpol when they are ill, do they have anti biotics? are they vaccinated? Have you any pets? all their medication is tessted on other animals you know.

Animal biochemistry is only marginally different to human. There IS a difference, hence the need for clinical trials in humans, but mostly all of the questions have been answered before it even gets to the animal testing stage. Its all done in the tissue culture dish. I know this because i have a biochemistry degree, i hasten to add i have never taken part or worked anywhere that has anything to do with animal testing. I have however considered becoming an animal technician because animal welfare is something very dear to me. I just didnt go down that road. Became a vet nurse for two years after my degree, i can promise you that the level of neglect i have seen regarding small animals, bunnies and rats etc in that environment astounded me. Rabbits left in their cages ALL day, hutches not cleaned out, resulting in fly strike, the results of which, i promise you, would be enough to make you vomit! All this by supposed animal lovers! Dogs neglected and poorly trained, stray cats, un vaccinated animals carrying infection, the list goes on. Im not talking about RSPCA cruelty cases, just the simple lazy neglect by owners whos pets are no longer a novelty.

i am sure none of us hear likes the thought of animal testing, but these idiots are nothing more than terrorists. If you want to do something positive to help minimise animal testing, donate money to people doing research into technologies that can carry out testing that is done in animals in vitro (in the test tube). There are organisations that fund this, the RSPCA being one of them i think.

Reallytired · 31/08/2007 22:16

A lot of animal right protestors aren't capable of logical thinking. They also have little or no scientific education/ knowledge.

It is a waste of time to engage in any intelligent discussion with fanatics.

If you are anti animal testing then you are being a hypocite using a mobile phone as well as any over the counter prescription drugs. (And yes mobile phones have been tested on rats.)

Animal testing pervades almost every area of life.

divastrop · 31/08/2007 22:34

the future of animal testing

snowleopard · 31/08/2007 23:07

and aaaaaarrrrggggh

SlightlyMadSCAREYthing · 31/08/2007 23:08

Oh don't get me started on PETA. They regularly pester the life out of my husbands company. He works in insurance. That's right, insurance. The insurance has vague (very vague) connections with Huntingdon Life Science. They've broken into the building and threatened to spray CS gas or follow workers home and put bombs under their cars. It sounds like a frigging wind-up but unfortunately these twats think it's OK to do!?!?!

Get near my house and they'll get a whopping great big punch on the nose. I expect they all take antibiotics or painkillers when needed (which have all been tested on animals). Hypocrites!

Rant over!
