ffs....these people. Putting bleach in contact lens solution??!! SO, it's Ok to maim innocent people using a product that the have nothing to do woith the manufacture of, but not to hurt a hamster in the name of medical science?

I know this is very controversial, and I think that unnecessary testing on animals for cosmetics etc should all be banned, but woud I rather a hamster died in order to create a treatment, than my child died because there was no cure??

the hospital will provide for peter a different cream. but what about for the kids. oooo i love the smell of germalene. but prefer savlon as know the girls dont react to that one.

saltire · 30/08/2007 15:38

DS2 has sensitive skin and we have Boots own brand antiseptic cream for him and he has no reaction to it, his exczema never flares up

saltire · 30/08/2007 15:38

DS1 that should say

The role of insulin was first worked out on dogs, by Banting and Best in Canada.

Dogs were made diabetic, and hen treated with insulin.

Prior to that the only treatment for insulin dependent diabetics was to starve them. Children with type 1 diabetes looked like concentration camp victims

i echo really tireds comments, have been inside such establishment, Never worked on animal research i hasten to add, overwhelmed by the level of welfare and commitment of the staff looking after them. If i have to come back as a bunny, i would much rather be a lab bunny than a poor neglected pet rabbit stuck in a hutch at the end of the garden.

speedymama · 30/08/2007 16:37

When they catch these thuggish, misanthropic poltroons, their automatic punishment should be that they themselves be used as guinea pigs for experimental drugs, especially as they clearly value the rights of animals more than their own (ie human rights).

saltire · 30/08/2007 16:38

I knew there was dogs involved somewhere MB

lyrasdaemon · 30/08/2007 16:55

Why not test drugs on criminals? At least that way scum like murderers, rapists and child molesters would be contributing something useful to society.

lyra, in principal this would be ok, but it would not be feasable as the genetic background would be unknown, obviously other factors would effect the action of the drugs etc. To be honest, much drugs research is carried out in vitro and in tissue culture. It is the safety aspects that are often tested on animals which must be tested on a known genetic background with no complications, otherwise it might be ok on Mr X, but because he had an underlying condition that made it so, if that makes sense.

The animal rights activists need to ask themselves what they would do if their children were sick and needed medication.

Blandmum · 30/08/2007 17:15

I read of an animal rights activist not so long ago who was diagnosed with breast cancer.

She took all the medication that she could, in spite of the fact that all of the drugs would have been tested on animals.

Her rational was that by saving her, she could continue to campaign for the abolition of animal testing, so in the long term more animals would be saved.

the words Great Steaming Hipocrite didn't seem to occur to her.

She was OK with taking drugs to treat her illness, but would prevent other people getting the treatments that they needed

I'm against animal testing - enough to try not to buy them.

I think these fuckers are the same self-righteous cun*s hanging around outside abortion clinics/knifing/shooting doctors

lucyellensmum · 30/08/2007 17:36

I too am against animal testing for cosemetics etc, i think the law stands that each new ingredient that is used must be tested, so new products are more likely to be tested recently. Many manufacturers get their products tested abroad, which is a bugbear as their rules aren't so tight as ours Even so, no excuse, these people are no better than terrorists

I hate the fact that we seem to care more about animals than we do about people in the UK. Not that I have any stats to back this up but I bet I could find some.

They're fking loons.

WideWebWitch · 30/08/2007 18:51

Oh blimey, a thread where most people agree with each other! Fantastic.

chocolatedot · 30/08/2007 19:00

When my BIL was staying he gave me a big lecture about how anti-animal testing he was. Funnily enough, he returned from the one shop he did with battery chicken and eggs (I only buy organic). I can't stand the hypocrisy that surrounds this issue.

unknownrebelbang · 30/08/2007 19:22

DH has been on duty at protests etc in relation to animal rights activists, and without wishing to stereotype, he would say that those he's spoken to/observed appear to be completely devoid of sense on this issue.

Roskva · 30/08/2007 20:31

A bit like a friend's dp who is a raving vegetarian who quite happily eats fish, despite the fact that most commercial fishing practices are seriously damaging to marine ecosystems, and who wears a leather jacket - apparently the fact it was second hand from a charity shop makes it OK .

Maybe people who are convicted of terrorism in the name of animal rights should be denied any medical treatment that has been tested on animals - that might make the nutters understand what they are trying to destroy.

chocolatedot · 30/08/2007 20:49

Yes - how exactly does fish eating vegetarianism work? I really don't get it.

SenoraPostrophe · 30/08/2007 21:02

It's a load of misanthropic old bollocks isn't it? It's enough to make me want to tuck into a nice fat white veal steak stuffed with fois gras.

but anyway.

don't see why vegetarians can't buy second hand leather though. they're not sustaining the killing by it are they? don't see why they can't eat by-products of meat (like gelatine) either. fish is another thing, but each to their own. Who really is consistent in everything?

chocolatedot · 30/08/2007 21:34

As a side issue, I was really shocked when cooking for my veggie nephews to look at the ingredients of veggie sausages / burgers etc. I had vaguely expected such stuff to consist of vegetables but they seemed to be made up almost entirely of rusk, fillers and so on. The nutritional content seemed to be negligible.

Thankfully it's just a small minority though, just like there are in any group, like football hooliganism etc

Most animal rights activists are perfectly lovely - particularly those older women a few years ago that stopped those veal trucks/sheep going anywhere.

The cops literally refused to do anything about it cos they were this lovely bunch of 'normal' double knit types
