ffs....these people. Putting bleach in contact lens solution??!! SO, it's Ok to maim innocent people using a product that the have nothing to do woith the manufacture of, but not to hurt a hamster in the name of medical science?

I know this is very controversial, and I think that unnecessary testing on animals for cosmetics etc should all be banned, but woud I rather a hamster died in order to create a treatment, than my child died because there was no cure??

[ducks below parapet and waits to get shot at]

i went through an animal-rights phase when i was in my teens,i became a vegan and joined all the against animal-testing groups.

they basically are a load of loons who recruit people by using shock-tactics.some of the leaflets i got sent were awful, with reports of mis-treatment and horrific photos taken by people who had gone 'undercover'.and of course,as an impressionable teenager,i believed everything i read.

it wasnt untill i got a list from the vegan society of everything that was animal derived,or may have been grown using pesticides that of course kill innocent, erm, pests, that i realised i would have to survive on organic fruit and veg if i wanted to be a 'proper' vegan.and gradually i grew up and realsied it was a load of old bollocks.

terrorism in the name of 'animal rights'?tossers[anger]

Reallytired · 30/08/2007 22:18

KerryMum,

I think its you who is uninformed.

Have you ever been in an animal testing laboratory? Have you seen with your own eyes what the conditions of laboratory rats in the UK are like?

Frankly I have more issues with pet shops selling rats to any idiots than animal laboratories.

Propaganda is selective about what images are included. Animal testing in the UK is really strict about welfare. If Huntington science is closed down then animal testing will move the the third world were there is little controls about welfare.

i certainly dont agree with testing cosmetincs and cleaning products on animals, and i would prefer to only eat meat that was humanely produced, but it is too expensive.i dont agree with testing medicines on animals as such, but untill there are reliable alternatives i dont see there is a choice.

what i dont agree with is the shock tactics some of these animal rights groups use.i used to belong to the NAVS and they endorsed the actions of these extremist groups,as though they were heroes risking their lives and liberty for the poor animals

LadyVictoriaOfCake · 30/08/2007 22:27

kerrymum, have you ever used protopic on your kids eczema? or any medicated cream?

expatinscotland · 30/08/2007 22:27

I nourish a pathological hatred of monkeys. I have no idea where it originated, but I have always felt intense anomosity towards them and this is going to sound awful, but when it comes to monkeys, experiment away!

LadyVictoriaOfCake · 30/08/2007 22:30

pmsl expat.

[sorry]

expatinscotland · 30/08/2007 22:32

It's like I can see entire philum of species in my mind, and when it comes to species of monkey, I feel like a dalek, 'Exterminate! Exterminate!'

I am with ReallyTired on this one.

A new medicine CANNOT be approved for use in humans until enough safety data has been generated to satisfy the regulatory authorities. Believe me companies don't do any more than is necessary obtain approval for drugs as it is very expensive. And I have to say they are ploughing massivre resourses into alternatives where possible - but law states that medicines must be tested to certain standards and absolutely reuires the use of animals.

And I also agree with housing conditions. (although I don't have first hand experience but have seen videos) - there are many dogs that are left alone at home whilst the owners go to work all day which are treated worse than lab animals. Or pets which aren't cleaned out daily....

Did you see what happened when the drug trials went wrong a year or 2 ago? Well that was after extensive testing. What on earth would happen if they were approved for humans without testing?

I am sorry - the use of animals in the discovery of new medicines is absolutely necessary and always will be. Cosmetics is probably far less important (which is where the droping of substances in rabbit eyes comes from - I am not aware of this type of test being used to test medicines).
