ffs....these people. Putting bleach in contact lens solution??!! SO, it's Ok to maim innocent people using a product that the have nothing to do woith the manufacture of, but not to hurt a hamster in the name of medical science?

I know this is very controversial, and I think that unnecessary testing on animals for cosmetics etc should all be banned, but woud I rather a hamster died in order to create a treatment, than my child died because there was no cure??

But why get so fixed on rabbits and their eyes? Yes, testing on animals for cosmetics and even cleaning agents is disgusting, and it's why I work for Avon and get all my makeup from there as they were the first company to stop buying any product not tested on animals, but we are talking about medical research. It's a completely different ballgame.

Animals in medical testing are looked after as much as possible, I am willing to bet that most of them get better care than the majority of pets in this country.

But anyway, that's not the question here, the question is why should completely innocent people (like some posters on this thread) with extremely tenuous links to a facility that tests the saftey of medicine have to suffer like this?

If we wanted to show these protestors exactly why what they are doing is so wrong then we coudl sneak into their house at night and put bleach and ground up glass in their milk and cornflakes, it might not kill them but the pain woudl give them something to think about....

But of course we wouldn't as we hold human life with greater respect than that.

kerry mum i hope you dont think im having a pop at you, but you were the only one brave enough on this thread to air your controversial view, i do not find animal experimentation acceptable, any more so than i find it acceptable that the UK and the US armies have caused so much death and destruction in iraq etc. This does not mean however that i think that it is ok for extremists to be over here blowing up our trainstations. This is more or less the same as what these lunatics are doing, i remember when my DD1 (now 17) was very young there being a scare on BABY FOOD by animal rights extremists, im sorry but these people are criminals the same as al queda and the IRA.

I think that animal experiments for cosmetics is unacceptable. As far as i am aware the individual ingredients of a product must have been tested, although most have been carried out many years back. The problem with propoganda from people like PETA is that the literature they are using is out dated. To clarify, i am Totally against testing on animals for cosmetics etc, after all we dont exactly need lipstick do we. As far as medical research then i have to say i am not against it, i am just trying to make the point that these places are not run by sadistic mad scientists. Most of the people who work in such establishments are animal lovers themselves and have a great deal of respect for the animals they are using.

I am also not saying that unacceptable practices haven't taken place in the past but i would like to think there are rules in place to prevent this.

One thing that doesnt sit well with me is primate research. I am not sure we can justify that, but again this is an emotive issue. Primates have been used recently in alzheimers research. I dont entirely agree with this, these animals are too intelligent. BUT, my father had alzheimers for about 3 years before he died a different mad to the dad i loved. He never got to see his new greand daughter because he was to ill and would have been a danger to her. He died when she was eight weeks old. Now i am sorry but if someone came to me with a drug that had been tested on primates that would have helped my father i would have taken it and been very grateful. These are the questions we have to ask ourselves.

Kerrymum, i do admire your stance on animal welfare it is clearly very important to you, i just think your energies would be better spent looking into funding some of the alternatives to animal research. AS i said, this is where the smart money is laying at the moment. Most pharma companies would love not to have to do research on animals simply because it is so expensive, and there are research groups seeking an alternative.

kerry mum, i remember the draize test being a huge issue in the eighties, when i myself was involved with a PEACEFUL animal campaign group. As far as i am aware, this practice has been banned for a long long time.
