I remember when this first broke and reading comments in local paper on Facebook. Lots of people were saying this was the case with their relationship, one woman in particular was adamant they were related.

So it was not a secret within the community?

I agree with pp that social services have a lot of questions to answer here.

My heart breaks for these poor children.

SouthernComforts · 12/11/2019 19:45

That is beyond awful.

If it's true that SS were involved when the "parents" were young then what the fuck were SS doing to allow this catastrophic fuck up of a family to end up this way.

CustardySergeant · 12/11/2019 19:46

She quoted Stephen King on her Facebook page "“Murder is like potato chips; you can't stop with just one.”

Babybel90 · 12/11/2019 19:48

You have to wonder why after 13 years and 6 children they were suddenly worried about being found out, and why the parent they had in common or friends or other family members never reported anything?

Or why they didn’t think that killing all their children might no draw more attention to them than just moving to another area where they weren’t known?

Those poor children, we can only hope they get the very best of care to move on with their lives.

Charmlight · 12/11/2019 19:50

I’ve read that one of the children had been accused of assaulting a younger child, and she was worried about all of them being taken into care?

Lockheart · 12/11/2019 19:51

@SouthernComforts I understand Barrass was in care as a child following neglect, and sexual and physical abuse. She's also a victim of her family. Given that they are half siblings it's not a stretch to think that Machin was also suffering from abuse when he was younger, or that he was abusing Barrass, given the "relationship".

It's very sad all round. If they'd been helped when they were young this could all have been avoided.

TitsInAbsentia · 12/11/2019 19:56

@Charmlight if that's the case then I suspect there was indeed more to the story and that one/some of the children were also being abused, as the patterns go.

And whilst I too wonder why SS didn't intervene earlier I don't think it's fair to be calling them out on this, we all know how overstretched they are, the shortage of care facilities/foster homes etc. Our society is a bloody mess, a disgusting shocking mess...

ssd · 12/11/2019 20:02

The sickening thing is, these 2 will be protected in jail from the ordinary criminals.

SouthernComforts · 12/11/2019 20:05

Do you have a link please Lockheart?

If so, I hope SS are scrutinised over this. Generations of abuse and incest and finally murder. It's a disgrace.

DonKeyshot · 12/11/2019 20:06

They'll be protected in jail from 'ordinary criminals'... but not all the time.

PixieDustt · 12/11/2019 20:07

Vile scumbags. I'd like to put something else but I'm sure it would get deleted. Don't deserve to breathe this air after what they've done!

Outsomnia · 12/11/2019 20:08

Let us remember all those darling children who were killed/abused/neglected also. Doesn't make the MSM either, it is all around us.

Bless those children. I don't know what to say.

PhilSwagielka · 12/11/2019 20:09

She should have just killed herself instead of offing those poor kids, selfish cunt.

Lockheart · 12/11/2019 20:11

@SouthernComforts it's in the Guardian: www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2019/nov/12/sarah-barrass-woman-who-murdered-teenage-sons-jailed-for-life

"In her defence, Bryan Cox QC admitted Barrass’s crimes were “nothing but evil”, but added that she was “profoundly damaged by her childhood”.

The court was told that Barrass had grown up in a home where she had suffered neglect and emotional, physical and sexual abuse, eventually being taken into care."

If the fact that she grew up in a home where she suffered sexual abuse and the fact she had 6 children to her half-brother AREN'T linked I'll eat my hat, or indeed any item of clothing you care to name.

TitsInAbsentia · 12/11/2019 20:11

Bizarre choice of court wear..
"Barrass wore a black off-the-shoulder dress with pink flowers as she cried throughout the 20-minute hearing"

SouthernComforts · 12/11/2019 20:14

Thanks @lockheart sounds like those poor kids never had a chance.

LittleTopic · 12/11/2019 20:14

I keep thinking about those poor children who survived. I haven’t read in the article from the BBC, but read another earlier where one of them apparently said they were scared they would grow up to be a murderer like their parents SadSad

Lockheart · 12/11/2019 20:15

@SouthernComforts I doubt their parents did either to be honest. Like I say, very sad all round.

steff13 · 12/11/2019 20:15

That's what they were afraid of their secret getting out.

That feels like something they should have thought about before they had 6 (!) kids together.

I remember when this story broke. Tragic. Hopefully the remaining kids can recover.

Paddingtonthebear · 12/11/2019 20:15

Jesus wept

breakfastpizza · 12/11/2019 20:16

“The children believed and even told officers at the scene that their father was dead, having died in the second world war.” Link

WTF?

Anotherlongdrive · 12/11/2019 20:16

The news quoted her as saying she would rather they died then went into care and

'I gave them life, I can take it away'

Another parent who sees their children as their possessions and not people in their own rights, with their own lives.

I would bet money that those children have all been abused over a prolonged period. I dont mean just sexually, but violence and emotional abuse.

No decent parent thinks they have the right to take their children's lives.

I would also bet there is a investigation into Social Services. I would bet money, these kids should have been removed long ago.

As an aside, karen matthews had her first child removed after it was discovered the father was her brother. I fear this is far more common than people imagine.

SabineSchmetterling · 12/11/2019 20:17

What a horrible case. I wish they didn’t name the perpetrators and victims in cases like this though. Those 4 remaining children have been through enough already. I don’t see why the general public need to see the photos and the names of their parents and siblings. The survivors lives are going to be difficult enough without having to worry about changing their names and identity to avoid people finding out that they come from an incestuous family and were nearly murdered by their parents.

Anotherlongdrive · 12/11/2019 20:18

If the fact that she grew up in a home where she suffered sexual abuse and the fact she had 6 children to her half-brother AREN'T linked I'll eat my hat, or indeed any item of clothing you care to name.*

It's likely he was abused too. I dont think it makes either of them any less blameless.

Anotherlongdrive · 12/11/2019 20:19

@SabineSchmetterling in all likelihood, they will be moved area and given new names etc. Like shannon matthews.
