Schoolgirl fights for right to wear 'chastity ring'

A 16 year-old girl is going to the High Court to gain the right to wear her 'chastity ring' at school. Read more here.

IMHO, this girl hasn't got a leg to stand on. The 'chastity ring' is not a Christian symbol, it is a symbol of a pledge made to remain sexually inactive until marriage, a pledge which can be made by those of all faiths and none. As the ring is not a uniquely Christian symbol, the girl's religious beliefs are not being discriminated against by being told she cannot wear it. For this very simple reason, the High Court should chuck out this case worthwith and tell the girl to get stuffed!!!

In the US, more of the teenagers who had signed up to these Christian pledges became pregnant than the ones who hadn't.
So best leave the rings off.

My mind is in the gutter, I thought a chastity ring had something to do with a piercing in a delicate place....and wanted to know how on earth anyone at school had found out about it!!!!

If she doesn't want to have sex, then that is fine by me. But I don't see what difference a ring is going to make to that. Or why anyone else has to know about it.

Reminds me of DH's neice who is 21 and doesn't drink alcohol - because of her religious beleifs. Which is fine. But she has to let everyone know within five seconds of meeting her that she doesn't drink. We went to a family party a few weeks ago and she had a bowl of trifle which turned out to have sherry in it. So she didn't eat it. And proceeded to offer it to everyone else who arrived at the table 'Would you like it? It's got alcohol in it and I don't drink alcohol'. Your choice. Don't parade it.

I think its great that she is standing up for what she believes in. Through the legal system

I dont know whether wearing a ring makes any difference to your studies either I dont really understand why the school wouldnt want pupils to wear small rings I have worn a signet ring since 13 never remember being told to take it off except for games

The SRT website promotes 'second chance virginity' as well. Which is quite a neat trick.

I'm all in favour of kids waiting until they are really ready before they have sex. I do feel that our society sexualises children too young.

But you don't need a ring ffs. You just need to have made up your mind.

This is rather like the charity bangles that were all the rage not that long ago. Lost count of the kids who told me they really wore it because of their deep felt links to a particular charity. To which my response was 'I support charirt too, I just don't feel the need to show off about it'

I think the theory behind SRT is great - it's about time chastity was promoted as a choice rather than a result of being left on the shelf.

But I can't see the whole fuss with her insisting on wearing the ring at school if it's against the school rules. It's not a recognised faith symbol and I supsect it's being used as a platform to promote the SRT's beliefs. I agree with the beliefs personally, but don't think this is actually going to get thwem much positive publicity.

The silver ring movement is a ghastly, creepy con that promotes really bad attitudes towards sexuality and is quite often favoured by fathers who tell their daughters to remain 'chaste" by which they mean "only do it with Daddy and don't tell any one".

However, I don't see why the school has to prohibit the wearing of the ring as long as she takes it off for a) games and b)cookery/science/handicrafts or any other lesson where it might be in the way or dangerous. It's like I don;t actually see whi schools need to prohibit the wearing of any kind of necklace (why should the superstitious get more privileges in this than the child who wants to wear, say, a locket with a picture of an absent or dead family member?) And there's no real sensible reason for schools to prohibit dyed hair either.
