That's just it though, isn't it smallwhitecat? My MIL couldn't breastfeed either of her two because she had no milk on either occasion BUT she had clean running water and was able to use formula safely.

As for the breasfeeding culture, we're on week 9 and I am already the odd one out amongst my friends. One of them told me breastfeeding is unnatural and another said I would have more personal freedom if I switched to formula.

But 100% praise for my HV, DH and immediate family who have seen me through the days when I was really sore and DS wasn't latching properly. So much of it is about having support around you. For me at any rate.
