I agree with Ruty Nemo; noone is judging a mother who formula feeds.
What bothers me is that the mothers in the clips were formula feeding in the belief that they were doing something extra good for their babies. Personally I think there are lots of perfectly good reasons for deciding to formula feed, but being (mis)led to believe that it will turn your child into a genius, while killing yourself with work to pay for the formula and hurting your child by using dirty water to make the stuff is not one of them. The companies were aggressively pushing formula in contravention of local laws. The whole thing was unlawful, unethical and cynical.

Nemo2007 · 20/05/2007 20:15

BTW I did sign it was just passing comment.

LongDistanceClara · 20/05/2007 20:18

I thought you would have done, Nemo - and again, I am sorry if it makes you feel bad

MissGolightly · 20/05/2007 20:19

done

  • I just didn't want you (and others) to feel bad as a result of this thread. It's the companies who need a good slap; mothers in general just try their best.

when o clicked on the link i expected to see news of how nasty the formula companies were being. wha ti d idnt expect was the mothers.
every single one of them looked proud and happy withe her little one. they all firmly believed they were doing the right thing for theire babies. reminded me completely of the mn breast bottle fights and the staunchness of the bottlefeeding camp. those women could be anyone from mn.
and that is why it is all themore sad what the companies are doing.

I found it hard to watch the film, but I'm glad I did. Signed.

appledumpling · 21/05/2007 15:24

Signed.

I find it quite strange that firms like Cow & Gate have helplines for breastfeeding. They make and sell formula. Am I being too cynical in being deeply suspicious?

ruty · 21/05/2007 15:38

i suspect you are not.

LongDistanceClara · 21/05/2007 15:43

AD, no, you're not being too cynical - why would they target women who are already ffeeding? Bfing mums are the ones they want to change to their product. There's a link on the Baby Milk Action site to some of the underhand and against the Code stuff the companies do in this country as well. I'll see if I can dig it out - was in last month's newsletter.

Apple.

Exactly

EXACTLY

LongDistanceClara · 21/05/2007 18:38

SWC, yes, bf culture is so diminished here it's untrue.

Largely down to advertising. It's lessened now, but still pretty pervasive.

But in the Philippines, it's deadly to let them keep on like this.

ruty · 21/05/2007 19:00

so many people have that experience smallwhitecat it is shocking.

I did a bit of work roughly connected to some of this stuff and it was very interesting the subtle methods used.
