In England the McCanns would be arrested

Off the bat, I of course hope with all my heart that Madeleine is returned safely

But her "parents" are a disgrace. They left Madeleine and two-year-old twins Sean and Amelie sleeping in the apartment ON THEIR OWN. They had taken turns to return from the restaurant to check on their children.

Now hang on! In this country that is illegal, for very good reason.

Even if they 'checked on them' every five minutes that's plenty of time for one of the kids to wake up and try to go to the toilet and crack it's head open slipping on the bathroom floor, or something equally disastrous. They'd never hear the screaming from a bloody restaurant down the road!

Obviously it's unlikely, but I just cant comprehend the mentality of leaving three children under 3 alone on their own, ever, let alone at night in a foreign country!

cod, no one is happy about being right...well, at least I don't think anyone is.
However, it really amazes me that people , after this has happened, can say that what the parents did is NOT neglectful....I could understand that line of thinking if nothing ever had happened, but not AFTER a little girl went missing....surely that is ultimate proof that it wasn't an alright thing to do...

PeachyChocolateEClair · 19/05/2007 19:18

)and I really shuldn't post this but I have found a wonderful way of preventing my money being used for purposes I do not wish- I give carefully to causes I have chosen )

cod we have down

Personally I dont think it is up to me to judge whether they ahve been neglectful, tehr are people to do that- and if they were it wasnt with nasty intentions, which does count for a lot.

FACT: I have never left mine alone

FACT: I am not always right

FACT: I do nto live other peolpes lives

CODalmighty · 19/05/2007 19:20

PeachyChocolateEClair · 19/05/2007 19:21

rabbleraiser · 19/05/2007 19:21

Hot air.

pmsl.

PeachyChocolateEClair · 19/05/2007 19:22

Ah yes full of a lot of that LOL

backing off this thread as alittle still, but thanks for changing the subject, appreciated

Judy1234 · 19/05/2007 19:22

3and, that's not a good argument at all. Children are hurt every day doing all kinds of things but that doesn't mean their parents shouldn't let them. The fact she was taken doesn't mean they did anything wrong at all actually.

3andnomore · 19/05/2007 19:25

tis not about "told you so" though is it?

3andnomore · 19/05/2007 19:28

Yes, I know riskassesment and all that...and yes there are risks we will all take...can't wrap them up....but I still, for my life, will not understand how anyone can find it o.k. to leave children under 5 on their own in a Hotelroom, even if checking half hourly....and really not because they could be taken, tbh, that is possibly the least likely thing to happen 99% of the time....but because of all the ohter possible things that could have happened, come on, well know what Kids can be like if unsupervised....maybe it's not unlawful, but imo it's still very wrong.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 19/05/2007 19:31

i agree with that 3&nomore, most of it.
i think i am very over protective...

LadyOfTheFlowers · 19/05/2007 19:31

i dont think it is 'very wrong', maybe a bit 'risky' for the reasons you mention.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 19/05/2007 19:32

ds1 for example, is a little bleeder! lol
he would trash the room the moment he realised he had the chance!

huffpuff · 19/05/2007 19:32

OMG!

Cant believe this is still going on!

rabbleraiser · 19/05/2007 19:34

Yours is hardly a model argument, Xenia.

Your views on SAHM are so well entrenched in MN lore that I'm surprised you've taken the time to come on this thread ... and yet you remain consistent to the end. Just leave your kids unattended, 'cos you've got more intelligent things to do.

They made a mistake ... they did something wrong. God love 'em, but they did, and the poor souls know it. There is no 'there but for the Grace of God go I,' for me. I wouldn't have asked His grace. I wouldn't have left them in a hotel room, on their own.

You would, and that's fine. The worst case scenario has obviously not happened with you.

You're flimsy.

3andnomore · 19/05/2007 19:36

LOTF...yeah...my es was a rascal when he was little (thank god he has grown out of it by now) but ms and ys are seemingly worse, as they have got eachother to get even more silly ideas..!
We had to stay in a posh Hotel last year for a few days and I found it was utter and sheer horror....you'd have to pay me to go into that sort of environment again...shudder!

Quattrocento · 19/05/2007 20:10

3andnomore

They did not leave their children in a hotel room.

They left their children in an apartment on the ground floor, with the door unlocked, next door to a main road, and a swimming pool outside the front door.

They went 100 metres away to eat dinner, out of earshot and eyeshot.

They did so in the full knowledge that one of their children was a toddler and therefore mobile.

This is not legal. It is in fact totally indefensible.

toomuchtodo · 19/05/2007 20:11

Xenia, if you had posted anything OTHER than

" of course I'd have left my kids alone when young just like the McCann's choose to do"

then I'd have been truly shocked!

3andnomore · 19/05/2007 20:13

well apartement /hotelroom...for me it's all the same animal....
unacceptable anyhow, imo....legal or not, I really don't care....it's wrong imo

Quattrocento · 19/05/2007 20:14

Xenia

Are you seriously arguing that the McCanns did nothing wrong? Honestly? Looking into your heart?

You've seen the legal evidence, you've seen the NSPCC guidelines, you know that what they did contravenes both and you still think that it's okay to leave toddlers alone?

Really?

Quattrocento · 19/05/2007 20:16

I totally accept people arguing who say that yes the McCanns did wrong, we all know that, it's time to rally round and show compassion, they are suffering our worst nightmares ...

But I can't accept the argument that they did nothing wrong!
