Issues raised by the CG case 11

Venusflytwat · 17/07/2017 18:30

This is a thread following the legal and ethical questions raised by the recent court case involving Charlie Gard.

Please could we refrain from insulting or otherwise "bashing" his parents. It isn't in the spirit of Mumsnet and will get the threads removed.

Please could we also remember that at the heart of this case is a terminally ill baby and his heartbroken parents. There are those participating in and watching this thread for whom these issues are painful. Please let's try and be mindful of them when we post. This isn't a place for name calling or trivialising the very real pain they feel. Many parents of severely disabled children are on here.

Lastly, here are some hopefully useful reference points of facts surrounding the case.

TinselTwins, what an exceptionally stupid statement from someone that has probably never ever ever been in that position, I am sure most rational parents would choose to turn life support off if they knew that their poor child was suffering and was going to die anyway, I think people forget the word terminal when it comes to charlies illness.

I know I would have to turn my child life support off if they were suffering.

MontyPython I was really fortunate and got to experience Neurology in two different world leading centres. It didn't appeal to me in either, because Neurology feels a lot to me like 'you've got this cool, really rare condition, but we can't really do much sorry'.

Paeds oncology or genetics is most likely the route I'll end up going down if I do decide to rule out ITU.

@PortiaCastis

Re:Nobody has a right to know at all it's a private matter

It was absolutely a private matter until the family started campaigning all over social and mainstream media.

I wonder how much press the court cases would have had without that. I damn site less I would imagine.

You can't open Pandora's box and then wonder or be aghast why everyone looks inside.

They're now advising each other that they can sign their petition more than once if they use different email addresses

Not that it matters, the judge isn't on X-factor, he doesn't care how many of you phone in.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 17/07/2017 22:38

Really don't get the petition or maybe we're not meant to..just surprised no one has questioned it. Guess it's harmless but don't get the point. It won't achieve anything so what do they think pushing/faking signatures will do.

muckypup73 · 17/07/2017 22:38

DarthMaiden, its hypocrisisy at its best lol

TinselTwins · 17/07/2017 22:39

I do and don't agree

I think that so long as you're still courting the media/social media, you can't really complain about the downsides

But if you pull away, you are not consenting to ongoing intrusion just because you were once active in the media and on social media

I think C&C have every right to do a full 180 and never make another public statement or pic or post ever again, and they should be left alone if that's what they do.

DarthMaiden · 17/07/2017 22:40

@TinselTwins

the judge isn't on X-factor, he doesn't care how many of you phone in.

I think that's my favourite quote on these threads Grin

What is it with these people and their inane petitions? Hmm Confused

Sostenueto · 17/07/2017 22:43

@TinselTwins

In an ideal world I would agree, in so far they "withdraw" from public life/media and should have their privacy.

The reality is it won't happen.

This case will be quoted, their words used, pictures etc whenever media outlets feel it suits their purposes.

They may or may not try and choose a private life their choice.

But bite the media tiger on the tail - especially in the internet age and nothing ever really goes away.

muckypup73 · 17/07/2017 22:48

I truly wish the parents would back away from socail media, close the ca page down and just go through with it themselves, they have done what they need to now, whatever the outcome most of charlies army will have buggered off after a little time, you know the ones that are there to support them, then it will be a case of getting on with it themselves. which personally I think they need to try and do.

Sostenueto · 17/07/2017 22:48

Oh dear it would be a real shame if some of them don't get the wristbands or other merchandise they ordered. (Hmm).

muckypup73 · 17/07/2017 22:49

Maryz, theres one of the admins that had a proper bitch bite at my on one of the newpapers because she did not agree with me, stephanie I am sure she was called.

jinglejanglejobs · 17/07/2017 22:49

Sostenueto tell her that medicine is definitely reachable and not to worry about loans too much! It's one more year of loan as NHS covers the final year for her, and the earning potential over the years makes it up very quickly. She's very likely to get uni bursaries (all unis have to offer them if charging 9k) and a good loan. Personally I squirreled my bursaries away and they're ready to be a house deposit in a year or two once I know where I'll be permanently. It's also really bloody fufilling as a job, despite all of the stuff going around right now. I'd go back and do it again... except maybe finals which they can keep Wink

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 17/07/2017 22:52

Saw the wrist band comment. People have weird priorities.

Wondering if they ever though things would get this huge social media wise. Didn't it all start off as raising money? Don't know what it's turned into now some insane mob all declaring love and crying.

I'd definitely be wanting to step away if I was them as it's to much about other people now. The sister in law however doesn't help!

Sostenueto · 17/07/2017 22:53

Thanks jinglex very helpful advice and gives us a bit of hope. We are so proud of her. XXX imogees not working sorry!

Sostenueto · 17/07/2017 22:54

Actually I'd be worried if my wristband didn't turn up ( smile)

Sostenueto · 17/07/2017 22:57

I mean what if you ordered a mug, air freshener and a wristband? Doesn't bear thinking about!

BeyondDrinksAndKnowsThings · 17/07/2017 22:59

If stuff doesn't turn up that isn't ordered through either a business or an official charity, I'd certainly post about it. Could be fraudulent.

muckypup73 · 17/07/2017 22:59

Sostenueto, I love the way you are, your right to the point just like me, I admire that, much better than beating about the bush.
