Josie Long - we are more at risk from right wing extremists than Islamic extremists

A friend just posted a link to Josie's rant on her Facebook page. I honestly felt sick watching it. For a start, in terms of numbers of deaths, we are looking at 2 deaths (Jo Cox and man at Finsbury Park mosque) (please correct me if I am wrong) compared to multiple deaths in Manchester and London Bridge, not to mention the attacks in Paris, Nice and Brussels. Firstly, how is this the time to be comparing which is worse, and secondly, if we must compare then Islamic extremists pose a far greater risk in terms of loss of life. Am I missing something? Or has the world gone mad.

Pigeon, maybe because your point was a bit shite?

And they reserve the nicest treatment for Westerners, don't they?

Wait til you find out what they do to Muslims.

Namechange2837 · 23/06/2017 16:59

It's not a competition about who is treated worse by ISIS is it? It was a question of what are we more at risk of currently - Islamist extremism, or far right extremism (white, English far right).

MorrisZapp · 23/06/2017 17:07

I googled it and got a YouTube video by a guy Jonathan someone 'taking down' her words. There are clips of what she said too.

I'm sure she's a kind and clever person but watching the video I'm inclined to agree with his analysis, though I don't condone his abusive language.

TheCrowFromBelow · 23/06/2017 17:08

I love Josie Long, but massive caveat - I haven't watched her Facebook thing as I don't do FB.
The facts are that yes, most recent terrorist activity across the globe has Islamic Extremism behind it, and the biggest European single terrorist event in recent history is Anders Breivik, a far right white supremacist.
I don't agree with those on this thread saying that there is bias in reporting the recent attacks, I think maybe the reporting you see is biased but I haven't noticed "mass hysteria" about Finsbury Park and down playing the other attacks - They are all shocking, and certainly Westminster, Manchester and London Bridge dominated the news, as befits such horrific events. Shadiq Khan didn't say what you think he did- that was Trump misreading it on an epic scale.

Darren Osborne has been charged with murder, and although he hasn't been to court the evidence it was him is fairly compelling. Not sure why you are stressing his crime is unproven?
Day to day hate crime is rising massively in this country, and the far right are increasing their activity.
People do turn to extremes in tough times, that works both ways, I think people both sides need to stop stirring it up.

However I find your comment about "one man in his fifties" just as distasteful as you say you find Josie Long's comments.
Just one death is one too many, and brown men in their fifties have no less value in the world than white children.

Namechange2837 · 23/06/2017 17:09

What's the YouTube video called Morris?

Hidingtonothing · 23/06/2017 17:14

Is anyone else thinking it's about time we stopped arguing over who's the greater threat and concentrated on ways to keep everyone safe? I don't see why there has to be so much 'us and them' rhetoric, it's unhelpful and divisive. Much as I hate to quote Cameron we really are all in this together because any one of us could be in the wrong place at the wrong time, whoever is behind an attack.

MorrisZapp · 23/06/2017 17:17

Sorry it's not Jonathan it's PJW, Paul Joseph Watson. He has some pretty ghastly things to say about feminism.

Namechange2837 · 23/06/2017 17:17

Hiding - absolutely!

MorrisZapp · 23/06/2017 17:17

... But I broadly agree with him on this issue.

MorrisZapp · 23/06/2017 17:19

His video is charmingly named 'the dumbest liberal ever' so be warned, it's pretty harsh.

MorrisZapp · 23/06/2017 17:21

The left are so often their own worst enemy. My fb is full of it. Memes saying 'I'd rather live next door to a Muslim than a racist', makes about as much sense as 'I'd rather live next door to a dentist than a racist'.

Namechange2837 · 23/06/2017 17:26

Ahhh yes, just watched it. Have to say I agree with him, and unfortunately for her (I'm sure she means well) she's made herself look a right idiot.

OlennasWimple · 23/06/2017 17:31

Perhaps Josie Long could share the information she has with MI5 and JTAC, who set the threat levels for the Uk. Currently, they assess the threat to the UK from international terrorism (aka Islamist terrorism) to be Severe, and the threat from Irish terrorism to be Severe in NI and Substantial for the rest of the UK. No mention of Far Right terrorism

WavingBranches · 23/06/2017 17:32

But she thinks she's right and all her Twitter mates will assure it is so..

pigeondujour · 23/06/2017 17:36

Yeah, unlike Paul Joseph Watson's measured and pragmatic Twitter followers Grin

WavingBranches · 23/06/2017 18:09

He is even more obscure/ less famous than her.

I know realise I do know her off the radio and TV.

CrossWordSalad · 23/06/2017 18:19

And FYI if you're white non-Muslim then no, you're not a long term victim of anti-Muslim hate crime/terrorism 🙄

I didn't say I was. I said we are all victims of the Islamist terror attacks in that we are all living with the fear and risk of them and the knowledge that people in our communities, who went to the same universities and live in the same streets as us (by which I mean everyone who isn't an Islamist) want to terrorise and murder us. I don't think this is a minor effect of the terrorism.

CrossWordSalad · 23/06/2017 18:27

It's pointless to argue that far-right white supremacism or far-right Islamic extremism are any worse than each other; they are both corrosive and dangerous and warped

I don't think anyone is arguing whether one is worse than the other. JL's video was about which we are more at risk from, in the UK, at the present time.

I'm glad pp have raised the issue of Islamism being a far-right ideology. I don't know why this is so infrequently said.

BertrandRussell · 23/06/2017 18:44

So has anyone actually watched what she said?

carbuncleonapigsposterior · 23/06/2017 18:57

Returning Jihadis have been urged to wage a holy war in Europe and have succeeded in murdering several hundred, taking into account, Paris, Nice, Brussels, Berlin, London, Manchester, Mardrid to name the major terrorist incidents, not to mention all those that have been foiled. Living close to London with children who work there, I have a much greater fear of another attack being carried out such as those we have already seen than right wing extremism.

BertrandRussell · 23/06/2017 19:15

Do we know what she actually said?

Jijhebtseksmetezels · 23/06/2017 19:23

if the far right and Islamists actually talked to each other, they would probably agree on many things- their hatred of people different to themselves, their hatred of homosexuals, their denigration of women who aren't locked away in the kitchen having babies. They are far right extremists.

This is exactly the point that Douglas Murray keeps making. The "regressive left" have engaged in faulty logic.

In their noble attempt to speak out for Muslims who suffer prejudice and attack from the far right they end up ironically defending another ultra conservative movement, one which is also far right but of the Muslim world: ISIS.

Here's JL

isadoradancing123 · 23/06/2017 19:29

Of course we are more at risk, after all it is people claiming to br muslims that are shouting " kill all westerners and infidels"
