Gossip is just an older version of the media. It stands to reason that gossip should be part of it. We get a lot of positives from gossip.

AitchTwoOh · 24/03/2009 20:41

you're being very cranky, beanie. i'm not sure why, tbh.

beanieb · 24/03/2009 20:45

lol at kranky! I'm not being cranky, I just don't get the relevance of you pointing that out to me!

so what? I mean, really, so what? Some of them are not in their homes. What difference does it really make to anything ?

AitchTwoOh · 24/03/2009 20:48

gossip should be part of the media? oh, absolutely. always has been. i like a gossip as much as the next woman. but i don't buy these mags, though, i tend to find that i hear about plenty of rubbish reading the broadsheets.

AitchTwoOh · 24/03/2009 20:49

because you said that they're welcoming the cameras into their homes, when for the most part they're not. so on the one hand it matters to you that they're welcoming people into their homes and on the other hand it doesn't? okay. it's no biggie in the grand scheme.

HerBeatitudeLittleBella · 24/03/2009 20:50

Ooh that's nice, resurrecting an old thread whose title is totally out of context.

That is really nasty. In the wake of the BB scandal, in context, the thread title is fine. In the wake of Jade's death, out of context in active conversations, it made me gasp with shock. Which presumably was the intention of whoever decided to resurrect it. Why? I'm a bit puzzled as to the point s/he's trying to make.

GLaDOS · 24/03/2009 20:52

You know what Aitch, I don't buy the 'gosspi porn' either - but it's the first thing I reach for in the doctors waiting room! I know loads of women who do the same!

AitchTwoOh · 24/03/2009 20:53

i believe someone did it a lot on sunday, i didn't see it. apparently the person was keen to point up the large number of people who'd wanted to lynch her last year and how many of them were now posting threads about how sad they were. or at least that's what MNHq said.

GLaDOS · 24/03/2009 20:54

I never bother with the broadsheets anymore. That is all rubbish!

AitchTwoOh · 24/03/2009 20:54

oh yes, definitely.

everGreensleeves · 24/03/2009 20:55

Well I popped back to MN a few days ago because I was missing it, frankly, and because I thought the recent unpleasantness might have blown over

but ffs.....I'm off again!![disgusted]

HerBeatitudeLittleBella · 24/03/2009 20:55

Can't remember any threads about wanting to lynch her.

This is Mumsnet, not the Sun.

AitchTwoOh · 24/03/2009 20:56

what has disgusted you exactly, greensleeves?

HerBeatitudeLittleBella · 24/03/2009 20:56

I think some people may have crossed her off their dinner party lists.

I suppose that's the mn equivalent of lynching...

AitchTwoOh · 24/03/2009 20:56

for the moment at least...

beanieb · 24/03/2009 21:00

The worst part of all these kinds of gossip pages/media IMO is the paps. Most media that you read uses pictures from paps, even the broadsheets, specially the internet. Even if you are reading just broadsheets you are still paying someone somewhere so you can see those pictures and to read that gossip. it's unavoidable - well no, actually it is avoidable but I can't think there are very many people with internet access and eyes who can avoid it completely.

I choose to buy OK! and sometimes Hello. I choose not to buy any other gossip magazines because it's either the same crap or mostly much more intrusive crap and it's such a waste of my income to do so. I'm quite happy with that TBH.

I like reading sanitised versions of people's lives, I enjoy looking at the frocks and the hair and the make-up. I know a lot of it is an illusion. To me it's exactly the same as watching something on TV like America's top model or Eastenders (although I don't watch either of those any more) or listening to the radio. It's an escape from reality for a few minutes a week. I like reading about some old American actor I have never heard of, or gawping at the tasteless decor in a perma-tanned Italian fashion designers holilday house.

I'm not ashamed and I never will be and if people like the Hoff want to earn a few quid by posing in their (or someone elses) wood paneled office then good for them! I'm not stopping them!

AitchTwoOh · 24/03/2009 21:01

or sent her a sausage roll in the post...

beanieb · 24/03/2009 21:02

"because you said that they're welcoming the cameras into their homes, when for the most part they're not. hmm so on the one hand it matters to you that they're welcoming people into their homes and on the other hand it doesn't?"

Oh right, I see what you have done .
You are taking it far to literally, darling! not to mention ignoring all the other reasons I said I buy it for. Silly

AitchTwoOh · 24/03/2009 21:05

yes, i have a habit of taking the written word literally. i can see that it's very silly of me.

beanie, i really don't see how you can't see that you're fuelling the paps by buying OK... i don't get the distinction you're making at all. there's an absolute rip-off of heat mag, called hot stars, inside OK.

Mintyy · 24/03/2009 21:12

In hospital waiting room for early scan for threatened miscarriage quite a few years ago, I picked up a copy of The Daily Telegraph and front page news with large picture was story of Liz Hurley and Hugh Grant splitting up. I also recall front page on Telegraph (which I had to read at work at the time) plus large photo: Fire At Home Of Judi Dench (and I think it was before she was a Dame).

beanieb · 24/03/2009 21:17

Am not going to stop buying it so there we go! Next time I will remember to put - peeking inside the "homes" of people who have welcomed them in through "their" doors

Am interested what you really think buying magazines like Heat and OK! says about people though.

Mintyy - is it the telegraph who own OK!? or is that the Express, I can never remember.

AitchTwoOh · 24/03/2009 21:20

it says that they're quite happy fuelling the paparazzi, for one. despite what they might say.

Threadworm · 24/03/2009 21:23

What is it that you do like about those mags, beanieb? Aren't they just for salacious airheads?

beanieb · 24/03/2009 21:28

But we all do Aitch, we are all fueling the Paps. I really wish I could know what your answer would have been before I posted about the Paps though. Never mind.

I'll stop reading OK if you stop buying and reading the broadsheets. Deal?

beanieb · 24/03/2009 21:31

Threadworm, I refer you to my earlier posts on the subject.
