Luciemule - well said!

i love Top Gear. and there is no way it is only speed orientated.
how can adapting a clapped out MPV inot a convertable and then putting it through a car wash be about speed?

in fact it is more often safety based. they constantly inform you of new safety features, tests and the safety scores for varius popular vehicles.

yes of course they try out the new gadgety cars and will of course use the most lusted after feature...the 0 -150 in a blink but thats not all they focus on.

whilst talking about how the car drives they also discuss its managability and how well it goes round corners, whether the braking system is effective etc.

if you watch TG you will know that its abot far more than just speed. and in fact its one of the funniest programmes on TV.

I think it says a lot that there is a "SAVE TG" campaign on a mothers parenting site!

janesmum · 29/09/2006 11:25

We have in the UK one of the worst child road death records in Europe. Any motoring programme that never, ever mentions this is absolutely irresponsible. Our towns and cities are entirely dominated by cars whilst a generation of kids have nowhere to play, ride bikes and so on. Rubbish like TG is part of the problem.
I certainly won't miss it if it goes.

Piffle · 29/09/2006 11:27

And the UK had that record long before TG ever started

SenoraPostrophe · 29/09/2006 12:05

"We have in the UK one of the worst child road death records in Europe"

no we don't. Overall the child road death stats for the UK compare very favourably to those of other european countries.

we do have a high child pedestrian casualty rate (when expressed as a rate per 100,000 children), but imo that's mostly because we drive more.

ruty · 29/09/2006 14:46

of course TG glamourizes speed. And i think it says a lot that you can put a thread on here about global warming and it gets about 3 posts. Put a thread on about TG getting cancelled and suddenly everyone is indignant and valiantly trying to save it. Yeah, yeah, shoot me down.

micra · 29/09/2006 16:20

i'm not into cars at all but every time I happen to seeTG on TV I get engrossed, enjoy it, and watch it to the end.
I think most people can separate the show's fast cars from reality - it's not like they show clips of Jeremy Clarkson doing 90 in a 30 zone with shops and schools is it?
Preserve TG - but maybe might have to tone the fast stuff down at first to be a bit sensitive to the recent accident (and I bet RH's wife doesn't let him do the fast bits anymore!)

shimmonbaby · 29/09/2006 18:05

I'd be devastated if it goes. I think people who believe that cancelling it will save lives are ignorant of the facts (and have probably not bothered to watch it). And to those who don't want their licence fee spent on it, that's fine- yours can be spent on something boring like Heaven and Earth, and I'm sure that mine when added to all those others who agree with me will more than cover the cost of Top Gear without us having to take any money from your fee.

By the way, if they ever want a female presenter- I'll snap their hands off trying to get to the wheel of the first car they put in front of me!

ruty · 29/09/2006 18:28

1] I've watched it.
2] Global warming is boring isn't it? that's why it's happening.
3] Why is it if you hate TG then you're supposed to like something like Heaven and Earth?
4]I am not ignorant of the facts, maybe just more sensitive to them, for personal reasons.

ruty · 29/09/2006 18:28

meant to add i'll parp myself now, not really the right thread to express these views on!

fullmoonfiend · 29/09/2006 18:52

I like TG. But it's just a programme. More important things to campaign about in life IMO. Sorry if someone has already said this (haven't read whole thread), but I can't help wondering if this 'threat' to TG isn't a big publicity stunt...

shimmonbaby · 29/09/2006 19:08

Who mentionned global warming? And anyway, when I talk about the facts, I mean things like (as previously mentionned in this thread) they frequently discuss safety issues on the show and in races they often mention how they've been held up by the speed limits and things like that. Also, how many people when convicted of a driving offence could say "In my defence, I wouldn't have done it it if weren't for Top Gear"?

The kind of people who go out to break the law, not caring who they hurt are not the kind of people to sit at home on a Sunday night watching a light entertainment show- It really is just harmless fun with a bunch of men having a laugh and making other people laugh.

ruty · 29/09/2006 20:29

totally disagree shimmonbaby. But as i parped myself, I won't go on.

cuillan · 29/09/2006 21:20

Signed by me & dh.

Cassoulet · 30/09/2006 22:51

Signed by whole family.

(I am totally uninterested in cars except on TG - it's one of the best things on TV)

Pixiefish · 30/09/2006 23:18

Thanks to everybody who signed. I didn't want to start a barney about global warming or anything else. juts bring this to people's attention. If you agree signm, if you don't agree then don't sign- simple.

FWIW- I do think that global warming is a rela problema dn am doing everything that i can to contribute to the lessening of it. i recycle, walk, don't use cfc's
