Goldie did you actually have a life in the evenings before all this started?!

EverythingCounts I am a complete rank outsider in the knowledge stakes too so can't add anything but find it strangely comforting to see that I'm not the only person who is thinking about it so much. My RL friends think I'm being a bit weird obsessing over something that is nothing to do with me but it is fascinating and horrifying at the same time.

I just keep hoping that whatever happened to the poor passengers and crew was quick and that they knew little about it. Goes without saying that it is absolutely horrendous for their poor families though.

For those asking about fuel loaded. It's entirely possible and indeed normal for the flights into and out off china to tanker fuel in because the fuel supply is not as good as outside of china and is much, much more expensive. So theoretically mh370 could have been full.

For what it's worth I'm not buying the flew on after fire incapacitated the crew, because a fire of that intensity would have brought the aircraft down in short order.

My credentials are ten years ground staff, but paid attention.

PesoPenguin · 18/03/2014 22:00

Wow Cavort that must be so tempting! There's no way
I'd dare though with all these conspiracy theories flying around!

CheckpointCharlie · 18/03/2014 22:02

Blimey cavort that's interesting.

Etainagain · 18/03/2014 22:03

Cavort I expect that very few RR employees will be able to access the information from the engines now. That data could hold the key. Has anyone actually asked the question about the RR data and when it stopped transmitting etc at any of the press conferences? I can't remember it being asked. I think a lot more is known about this than anyone is saying.

Cavort · 18/03/2014 22:04

RR's IT systems are outsourced and the company aren't the greatest. DH hasn't tried to log in so maybe they have changed it and we certainly won't be finding out.

DH doesn't think the pilot would be able to turn off the engine info.

That's fascinating Cavort Shock

meditrina · 18/03/2014 22:05

"Why has no one admitted responsibility though?"

Some ideas:

a) there is no-one responsible (though entirely consistent with deliberate action, it might be mechanical failure)
b) the person or people responsible were on the plane and are now dead
c) it was a dry run of a new capability (cyber attack or noxious substance) and they don't want anyone to work out who has got it before it is used in a spectacular
d) the plan went wrong, so don't want to be associated with it, but are enjoying tying up so much investigative time
e) the plan is only part way through and the plane will turn up again.

Etainagain · 18/03/2014 22:05

Cavort at what frequency would any messages have been relayed to RR from the engines?

GarlicMarchHare · 18/03/2014 22:06

YY, Eta, RR said very early on that they were not making any more info public, but were working closely with investigators.

Realising they must have access to the engine data will explain how they were quickly sure it wasn't a simple accident - but not why they're searching the oceans.

difficultpickle · 18/03/2014 22:06

It just seems odd that if the RR data is available the Malaysian defence minister is giving press conferences talking of a search area over 2m nautical miles. Why the secrecy? After so many days the real event can't be any worse than all the weird conspiracy theories.

Etainagain · 18/03/2014 22:08

The Malaysian officials are saying that no organisation has claimed responsibility, which I find very strange given that in probably every major incident, numerous groups claim responsibility even though they've had nothing to do with it.

ChaffinchOfDoom · 18/03/2014 22:08

altitude triggers a creepy idea

RR having all the info and none of it in public domain another creepy idea...

they could know it has landed safely but as no one knows where that would be tortuous for the families...

GarlicMarchHare · 18/03/2014 22:09

Cavort, can the satellite transmit any more than one packet an hour to the plane?

Etainagain · 18/03/2014 22:09

Good point Garlic

livingzuid · 18/03/2014 22:09

difficultpickle the problem is with the info is that this is a criminal investigation now and there actually is very little they can say. According to the Malaysian Ambassador to China.

Which makes sense but I can't imagine how hard that must be for the families.

They most certainly know far more than they are sharing though.

Stockhausen · 18/03/2014 22:10

Ive lost track of which thread im on, so marking place until tomorrow after work!

As always, hoping for answers before then :(

Hmmkay · 18/03/2014 22:13

That's an amazing bit of info Cavort. These threads are fasinating.

I'm I the only one who really wants Cavorts dh to try and log into RR now? only joking of course Shock

livingzuid · 18/03/2014 22:14

With regards the claiming of the act, I read on the Guardian that Al Qaeda wished they had the capacity to pull off something like this

meditrina · 18/03/2014 22:16

Or perhaps it is simply that the RR data isn't conclusive?

Or ended at about the time other systems were switched off?

AngryFeet · 18/03/2014 22:16

God this is a minefield :(

DH is just about to get on a place from the US back to London. Makes me very nervous!

livingzuid · 18/03/2014 22:16

Etainagain it would depend on the end goal though. This might be one step in a wider strategy perish the thought. Or if you wanted something or someone on the plane so it was an organised crime hit. Don't think they would broadcast it.
