Goldie can you recap on ADS-B please?

There was some talking head on aviation on Sky yesterday saying that we didn't even know if MH370 had ADS-B as nobody had asked the question & it doesn't become compulsory until 2015.

How does ADS-B differ from a transponder?

sara11272 · 18/03/2014 21:47

This is potentially a massive thing then? That RR could have, or request, info that showed whether the plane had landed/ crashed on sea or on land?

Burmahere · 18/03/2014 21:47

living you didn't put something in your DH's tea did you so that you could sneak back on? Grin!

Does anyone else keep tuning into News 24 on the hour every hour or is it just me Blush. I pray for an old-fashioned news flash all the time.

Found it so sad watching some of the relatives speaking earlier on Channel 4 news, they are so desperate for everyone to be safe and sound somewhere soon to be returned to them. It is so tragic Sad.

Guess there won't be much on the 10pm news as middle of the night there now.

JKSLtd · 18/03/2014 21:49

I'm off to bed in the hope there'll be news in the morning. But then I've done that since it went missing...Hmm

Burmahere · 18/03/2014 21:49

turning onto News 24, clearly we can't actually become the news!

GoldieMumbles · 18/03/2014 21:50

"Ah! The Aviationist says the RR engine transmissions are the same as ACARS and we know they were switched off..."

I'm not so sure. We know that MAS had ACARS data subscription through VHF but not through SatCom. But it was the SatCom that continued pinging. I don't know if RR could access their data through SatCom regardless of the 'missing' subscription. So I think it is theoretically possible for RR to get at the FADEC data remotely if it is true thatthe SatCom was still 'pinging'. I'm not 100% certain and I sure as hell don't have a Boeing wiring diagram to see.

lessons that was a great link.

burma Grin no and I'm jealous that he can sleep so easily too!

sara11272 · 18/03/2014 21:51

You don't have a Boeing wiring diagram to hand, Goldie?! Tsk tsk! Grin

NickNacks · 18/03/2014 21:52

Can someone please do a brief summary of all the acronyms? I'm confused Confused

lessonsintightropes · 18/03/2014 21:53

it would make sense for RR to continue getting the data even if MAS didn't subscribe, for their own purposes in terms of quality control and engine life/activity/maintenance requirements etc.

Cavort · 18/03/2014 21:53

You can apparently turn the engine transmissions off but only someone with a very specialist knowledge would know how. I think RR track all their engines as a matter of course whether the airline subscribes for feedback or not.

DH reckons he could still log in to RR and have a nosey at the engine info himself but probably not a wise move if we don't want MI5 knocking on the door.

GoldieMumbles · 18/03/2014 21:54

"Goldie can you recap on ADS-B please?"
"How does ADS-B differ from a transponder?"

It's a type of transponder. Flightradar24 uses the ADS-B data and displays it for all to see. It gives flight code, aircraft registration, altitude, speed, heading, departure point and arrival point data through the VHF comms system. Not sure about mandated implementation date but given that I have seen many screenshots from Flightradar24, it certainly had the ADS onboard - and active until turned off.

In that case Cavort don't inadvertently out yourself (reaching for my own tinhat now)

EverythingCounts · 18/03/2014 21:55

Have been following these discussions for a while but not posting as I can't add anything to the interesting stuff being posted by others.

Burma, yes, also checking the news and it's a shame there has been so little further information today. The report I watched earlier was also talking about how the black box signal will run out in 30 days - presumably they think it makes a better story to have a timeframe, Hollywood thriller-style.

GoldieMumbles · 18/03/2014 21:56

"You don't have a Boeing wiring diagram to hand, Goldie?! Tsk tsk!"

Nope - no diagrams from brand B. Brand A on the other hand... any and all that I want!

Mercury triggers were used in the Lockerbie bombing. They are bombs triggered when a certain altitude is reached. If the 5000 feet and 45,000 feet altitudes are to be believed in the Malaysian flight someone in control of the plane could be trying to find the 'right' altitude to detonate but failed and ran out of fuel and ditched. Or was successful in detonating a bomb.

That would explain the signals being sent from the engines and the transposer being switched off.

Why has no one admitted responsibility though?

GarlicMarchHare · 18/03/2014 21:57

Good grief, they don't cancel old logins?? Shock

That's it, I'm taking up hacking! Soon as I've finished a course, I'm available to the highest terrorist bidder

ChaffinchOfDoom · 18/03/2014 21:58

Grin at Goldie member you guys belong together

GoldieMumbles · 18/03/2014 21:58

Right ladies, night all and mind how you go. I'm dropping off at the computer and am starting to write shite three times before my posts make sense.

Swot up on those abbreviations, now. Test on Friday, remember Grin (Cavort is excused)

Hawkshaw · 18/03/2014 21:58

Cavort, that is fascinating. How specialist are we talking to turn those transmissions off? A pilot? Or someone more specialised than that?

livingzuid · 18/03/2014 21:58

Here's a good roundup of all the theories from the BBC.

m.bbc.com/news/magazine-26609687

cavort oh dear, don't think that would be a good idea Grin but yes, very true that they would track as a matter of course. Many companies do on all sorts of things. It's essentially a data gathering exercise and the monetary value is selling that on I guess, whilst for RR it also has added value for R&D. Really interesting.

Cavort · 18/03/2014 21:58

No need to worry about outing, DH is not going anywhere near RR systems just to be nosey. This thing is too damn big to even contemplate it. We will find out on the news just like everyone else.

GarlicMarchHare · 18/03/2014 21:59

Why has no one admitted responsibility though?

If it was a robbery ...

Interpol hunts Mangosteen thieves?!

meditrina · 18/03/2014 21:59

"This is potentially a massive thing then? That RR could have, or request, info that showed whether the plane had landed/ crashed on sea or on land?"

RR have been working with the investigation from Day 1 (mentioned in various press conferences). If they have data, the investigation has got it.

dopplerdong · 18/03/2014 21:59

is it possible to eliminate one of the flight paths north or south by doppler?
