medtrina do you mean if the data was no longer sent once the ARCS was turned off? So there would be none available?

lessonsintightropes · 18/03/2014 22:21

Angry this may sound callous to the poor passengers on MH370, but the chances of anything happening to your husband's flight honestly are miniscule, please don't worry.

livingzuid · 18/03/2014 22:24

Yes, it is still v safe to fly. Particularly that route which is security central. This is a really unprecedented incident.

Monetbyhimself · 18/03/2014 22:24

BBC just said that Malaysia now not sure that acars WAS switched off by someone on board and are looking again at technical/mechanical failure.

I cannot imagine the hell that these families are going through.

livingzuid I don't know (it really was a question in earlier post). RR have data, plane has not been found. Which is more likely - significant RR data not swiftly acted on? Data inconclusive? Data incomplete (perhaps stopping when other data stopped)

Oh, and there have been at least two reported claims of responsibility. Neither mentioned in the Malaysian press conferences, possibly because they are trying (and sometimes succeeding) in sticking to information which has corroboration.

livingzuid · 18/03/2014 22:28

Oh I missed this:

'The westerly turn that diverted the plane off its flight path was programmed into the aircraft’s computer navigation system, probably by someone in the cockpit, US officials told the the New York Times.'

Sorry, you all probably knew that. It just reminded me of some of the discussions earlier.

difficultpickle · 18/03/2014 22:28

It's inhumane. Sounds to me as if they are trying to fit a story rather than giving the truth. With the amount of military satellite hardware I'd be truly amazed if they genuinely have no idea what happened.

livingzuid · 18/03/2014 22:30

And here is the New York Times article on the programming of the flight path.

difficultpickle · 18/03/2014 22:31

I know nothing about engines but I would be surprised if RR data relay relied on piggybacking off another data system on the plane (ie the transponders).

AClassyMove · 18/03/2014 22:32

.

difficultpickle · 18/03/2014 22:32

Other question I have is what is there to stop the re-programming of the flight computer being done remotely rather than by someone physically in the cockpit?

meditrina · 18/03/2014 22:35

Sorry - I didn't mean only that it might be pig backing off the systems we have been told went down. But if systems were being turned off or failing at about that time, why not whatever the RR system is as well?

If the reprogramming is a correct report, could that mean a new flight path designed to avoid known radar?

livingzuid · 18/03/2014 22:39

Thanks lessons :) aside from this insomnia and nausea I'm fine. Can't wait for the baby to arrive though!

Ooh now that is interesting from the BBC monet. Can't find it on their website but will keep stalking elsewhere. My god, what a topsy turvy tale this is. Those poor relatives.

medtrina I think RR were working with the investigation from the outset. I suppose they can't share anything else.

difficultpickle upthread there is some information on a cyber attack on the plane. It's not discussed much due to a lack of expertise in suspect and also because people in the know can't talk about it.

livingzuid · 18/03/2014 22:40

Sorry X post gaah. And a good point, why would it keep pinging if all else had failed?

lessonsintightropes · 18/03/2014 22:42

living Brew, Cake and best wishes for a speedy arrival!

meditrina I'm about as far from an expert as it gets, but I suspect the RR systems will not be on the same circuits etc as the others, in order to supply the engine data regardless of a failure elsewhere on the plane.

yggdrasil · 18/03/2014 22:45

"Other question I have is what is there to stop the re-programming of the flight computer being done remotely rather than by someone physically in the cockpit?"

Well presumably the difficulty in getting a signal to the plane. Mobiles don't work. How would someone control it remotely unless they could get the signal there?

BoiledPiss · 18/03/2014 22:45

Getting on this thread quick before bed

Astrogeek · 18/03/2014 22:48

Someone up thread mentioned a Doppler effect. I have been wondering about this.

Is there is any spectral information recorded, so you could get a Doppler shift from the received frequency at the satellite? Unless the aircraft is flying on a track perpendicular to the satellite, along the red arc, it has an approach or recession velocity, and so could give a link between direction and speed.

livingzuid · 18/03/2014 22:50

What do we mean by doppler effect please :) I'm only used to the one at my doctor's surgery Blush

livingzuid · 18/03/2014 22:57

Article on the fact that it took the Thai authorities ten days to release info and acknowledge they tracked the flight as it turned West.

www.mcot.net/site/content?id=53282141be047004a08b463f#.UyjOn8twbqC

Jonathan Head, BBC News, Bangkok
tweets: #Thai air force takes 10 days to acknowledge it did track #MH370 turning west - makes Malaysian government look swift.

livingzuid · 18/03/2014 22:58

To be fair to the Malaysian government this must be a nightmare of politics to navigate.

Astrogeek · 18/03/2014 22:58

So you know when you hear an ambulance it sounds different if it's coming towards you than if it's going away? That's because the sound waves are either more squashed together or stretched out. This also applies to visible light so we can tell if stars are moving closer or further away, this is red shift or blue. I'm wondering if it applies to the radio waves coming from the plane back to the satellite. If so this could tell us the direction it was going.

Astrogeek · 18/03/2014 22:59

Sorry that reply was for livingzuid

monicalewinski · 18/03/2014 23:05

Interesting article about possibility of electrical fire, worth a read link here
