Doctrine yes I agree parallel searches make more sense if they weren't sure which way it went. I just thought that the other 'pings' would have clarified the direction. If they had this info, and it indicated that the plane went south, then it seems odd. Obviously they didn't release info on other pings so we don't know, but I thought it was possible to calculate the direction of travel from them.

I hope they can quickly confirm whether this is the wreckage or not. It just looks like a blob to me Blush.

livingzuid · 20/03/2014 08:33

The whole thing has been a mess. So many questions to be answered once this is confirmed.

It gives me the shivers the whole thing. Those passengers and crew, what must they have gone through :( even if they bought it down whole I doubt that people could survive this long on the Indian Ocean which is pretty treacherous.

AGnu · 20/03/2014 08:34

Just out of interest Goldie is there some identifying number on multiple parts of the plane? If all they found was a wing, would that be sufficient to state it definitely was that plane or would they only be able to say it was the same sort of wing & therefore highly probable to be the plane given that there are no others missing in the area?

The way I see it, there's 2 options if it's confirmed - the plane crashed in the water or it's been placed there by someone. Anyone else notice it's a US boat that got there first? I don't know what to think anymore. Even if they find the black box there will be conspiracies about this for years.

Catsmamma · 20/03/2014 08:35

my source is BBC Breakfast, (don't laugh...I cannot bear Chris Evans so I have to put the television on!) but the Australian guy just said they had info from the US Authorities earlier in the week and that a large but specific area was being searched since then.

And now they have these objects to investigate. new and credible they are saying.

Planes at 1000 feet are using visual and radar and electro-optics to search ....planes can only search for about 2.5 hours due to the range from land.

I wonder how quickly more info will be available? And how they can ascertain the "WHY?"

DowntonTrout · 20/03/2014 08:38

Seeing as these images are from 4 days ago and this specific search area has been shown in reports for the last couple of days does it seem that the US has been investigating independently to the Malaysian investigation?

Catsmamma · 20/03/2014 08:38

apols for dreaful sentences...it's too early for me to be contributing really!

AGnu · 20/03/2014 08:38

DH was wondering - who owns the satellite the pings came from? Anyone know?

Bornin1984 · 20/03/2014 08:38

I reckon the images are of a shark

Hmmkay · 20/03/2014 08:40

www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/nation/2014/03/20/search-crew-something-big-down-there/

Search crew said "there is something big down there".

Also says the average depth there is around 5km. Hope they can confirm something today for the sake of the families.

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 20/03/2014 08:40

I think if they'd been sure they would have preferred to avoid searching 8m square km or whatever!

I don't know what if any other pings there were.

DowntonTrout · 20/03/2014 08:40

If it is MH370 the "why" is the million dollar question isn't it?

I suspect the answer will be a long time in coming.

AGnu · 20/03/2014 08:41

Yes downton that's what I was thinking. There was some quote from a US bloke I read yesterday that they were receiving great cooperation from the Malaysians, not that they were cooperating with them. Seemed incredibly arrogant & like they're running the show!

Presumably the images from all relevant feeds are being analysed which takes time.

DowntonTrout · 20/03/2014 08:44

AGnu that the US all over isn't it? All seeing, all knowing.

Plus there has been much speculation about a country having information but not wanting to reveal their capabilities. That will be the US then.

Hmmkay · 20/03/2014 08:45

Oh right!? I didn't see that shivari. Just the waiting game now I guess.

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 20/03/2014 08:46

It does look rectangular.

AnyaKnowIt · 20/03/2014 08:46

Does anyone remember anything on the news about a leaked map?

usuallyright · 20/03/2014 08:47

its all a bit odd. American boat arrives first. Hmm.

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 20/03/2014 08:48

Why? The sea based search was starting at the end of the arc and a number of countries were involved.

AGnu · 20/03/2014 08:49

I really do have an overactive imagination - now I'm picturing the US in a tizz after carefully placing a faked wreckage & directing the Australians to it only for them to turn round & announce that all they found was a whale!

Seriously though, this can't go on for much longer, can it?!

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 20/03/2014 08:49

A quick Google on shipping containers lists the biggest type as half of what the object measures, however.

Catsmamma · 20/03/2014 08:50

How far is the debris from those teeny islands? French Southern Antarctic Lands and Heard&McDonald Islands?

that's the only thing on the horizon as far as I can make out from google maps.

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 20/03/2014 08:51

There are too many countries and people involved to her away with fake wreckage - and what would be the point?

PsammeadPaintedTheLion · 20/03/2014 08:54

Did I read yesterday that they have known for a while that this area was where the plane was?

In which case, why did they keep banging on about problems with diplomacy etc? I can't imagine the Aussies kicking up too much fuss.
