While the Malaysians were saying the northern arc was more likely, the US were first to dispatch a boat to the Southern Indian Ocean. These photos are 4 days old. The Australians suddenly step up their involvement. Then news is released about a specific search area.

Again, I say that there was much more information out there though it's not necessarily so that this information was "shared". It looks to me as if the Malaysians were running round like headless chickens while the US were quietly working away with their own theories. I'm only saying that's how it looks- not that's how it was.

I just hope that the passengers didn't suffer. If this is the wreck. I hope there were no survivors clinging onto wreckage waiting to be rescued. There have been several crashes onto water with survivors, but they were discovered and rescued quickly.

PsammeadPaintedTheLion · 20/03/2014 09:02

I was reading on lots of websites 4 days ago that the southern arc was more likely as there was less chance of detection due to not having to fly over so many country's airspace, radars etc. Which implies that it was an act of terrorism, doesn't it? Or that the pilot really wanted to go somewhere for some reason.

I presume they put their heads together and decided that whilst the southern arc was more likely, that someone would have to keep the north covered too. It woukd make sense for Malaysia to do that as they are closer and presumably more familiar with politics/diplomacy in the region.

usuallyright · 20/03/2014 09:05

yes, would be interested to know where its final destination was going to be, if this is indeed the plane.

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 20/03/2014 09:07

My American friend has posted on Facebook that her Granny, who is psychic apparently, has clearly "seen" the aircraft in a hangar. Sorry to inform you all but this lady has worked as a medium for 40 years so is obviously correct.

Hmm
DowntonTrout · 20/03/2014 09:09

I suppose the diplomacy comes into it as if they knew the airplane had reached the end of an arc it was either there, in the Southern Indian Ocean or in one of the "Stan" countries.

Considering the tensions around the Stan region, and what that could mean, it is a very tricky situation to ask " have you seen our plane?" Without offending or seeming to point the finger. And trusting the response of " no we haven't seen anything" well- it would then be diplomatically difficult to keep probing that area wouldn't it?

DowntonTrout · 20/03/2014 09:10

Has she got a tin hat too Saga?

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 20/03/2014 09:16

Downton no, but her spirit guide does.

traininthedistance · 20/03/2014 09:16

The Australians have a very expensive military radar network (Jindalee Operational Radar Network) which is meant to cover all that airspace and halfway across the Indian Ocean...if the plane went on the southern course one would hope they have radar evidence of it!

wannaBe · 20/03/2014 09:17

I don't think the fact it was the southern arc implies that it must have been an act of terrorism. After all, flying over the southern arc would put them more closely in line with having to land in countries like Australia who would not be sympathetic/accommodating whereas in the northern arc there are more countries where terrorists might be able to hide more easily.

It's true that to have flown over the northern arc would have made the plane more detectable though, but why (and the implication seems to be that this was the pilot not other sources) remains to be seen.

I also don't think that there has been more known than has been released, unless they could have been sure that the plane had gone down with no hope of survivers. At no point has terrorism been muted as a possibility, and especially now the americans are involved this would be something which would have been acted on very quickly, even as a precautionary measure and it hasn't.

AGnu · 20/03/2014 09:18

Sorry Saga but she's wrong. My DS has said several times over the last few days that the plane "fall down" & is now "in a jungle on a fish". He's only 2 so is an innocent & clearly more connected to the ethereal powers... Or something... Grin

Interesting, shivari!

Quinteszilla · 20/03/2014 09:29

I am sure that airplane was in a hangar once. ...

Absolutely. I suspect the flight deck voice recorder when located will yield very little if it only records the last two hours of flight as I'm still of the opinion that the pilots were overcome with some sort of fumes & the plane flew till it ran out of fuel. I am unconvinced about MH370 "navigating" those waypoints after the turnback west tbh.

I do know how to use punctuation, honestly Blush

KenAdams · 20/03/2014 09:34

What time is today's press conference?

difficultpickle · 20/03/2014 09:34

It could easily be two shipping containers bolted together. When ships lose containers they lose them individually and in stacks (ie more than one connected together). Loads of containers are lost every year in bad weather. They often float in or just below the surface.

firstchoice · 20/03/2014 09:35

I have learned so much from this thread -
tomrod, ship tracking, LOTS about planes etc
(none of it useful to a terrorist, before anyone starts fretting)

Also about tinfoil hats and spirit guides Grin

I hope its the wreckage in a way for closure for the families.
Cant believe they've been cooped up in that hotel being 'herded around' and kept in the dark the way they have, so sad.

There would still be so many unanswered questions though....

NinePeedles · 20/03/2014 09:38

Press conference on now.

Grokette · 20/03/2014 09:38

Press conference is happening right now. Waiting, waiting...

CuppaTeaAndAJammieDodger · 20/03/2014 09:42

Nothing more to report from the press conference - just what we already know about the debris, they're expecting reports this afternoon (their time), also been said (by Australian aviation expert Geoffrey Thomas) that these are the most difficult seas to search as the seas can get to 30m (thinks back to watching Perfect Storm and can imagine how high that is)

MerryMarigold · 20/03/2014 09:44

They won't be able to confirm wreckage for several days, I think.

So, considering its location, were the Maldives sightings genuine?
