If it was pilot suicide, is there some cultural reason for trying to hide all evidence of that?

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 17/03/2014 21:25

Huh. Well, we've learnt something about different kinds of phones at least :-)

Goalie · 17/03/2014 21:29

I'm not convinced it's crashed. Has it landed somewhere and is currently being loaded with dirty bombs or similar, only to take off later and continue to it's target. Whatever has happened, I can barely imagine the pain and loss that the families are suffering...

GoldieMumbles · 17/03/2014 21:30

"Could a 777 be landed on visuals only?"

Yes, heavies can be landed under VFR (Visual Flight Rules). It's not the recommended procedure - it should be done on instruments - but it can be done.

GoldieMumbles · 17/03/2014 21:32

I'm going to add a caveat to that. Yes, in the daylight.

In the dark, with no runway lighting - erm, no.

Etainagain · 17/03/2014 21:32

If the plane was loaded with bombs or biological weapons, I wonder what would be the likelihood of it reaching its eventual target without being shot down?

trixymalixy · 17/03/2014 21:33

Why would you do a test run? Surely all that would achieve is to close any gaps in security they have exploited. I would imagine Malaysian ATC would be unlikely to ignore/misd any unidentified aircraft on their radar screen ever again.

trixymalixy · 17/03/2014 21:34

*miss

SantanaLopez · 17/03/2014 21:34

If it was pilot suicide, is there some cultural reason for trying to hide all evidence of that?

Surely not, if you want to hide your suicide, you don't do it with a 777 and nearly 300 other folk!

Etainagain · 17/03/2014 21:36

Trixy, I agree...seems like an odd theory to me. Surely, after this incident, systems will be put in place to ensure that planes can be properly tracked.

Etainagain · 17/03/2014 21:37

Santana, you do hide it if you ditch your plane in a super deep ocean where evidence of what happened is virtually impossible to find.

NumanoidNancy · 17/03/2014 21:38

What is your current theory Goldie, or maybe the current theory amongst knowledgable aviation types?

Etainagain · 17/03/2014 21:39

Goldie is there any way for data monitoring by the black box to be blocked by the pilot?

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 17/03/2014 21:40

Etain, yes if the circuit breaker is pulled it can stop data recording, I think Goldie explained it to me upthread.

werenotreallyhere · 17/03/2014 21:40

By 8am Malaysian time it was daylight in a lot of the search areas surely?

SantanaLopez · 17/03/2014 21:43

I suppose when you put it like that Etain.

TheHoneyBadger · 17/03/2014 21:44

first tip for disguising a suicide is definitely don't turn it into an international event Grin sorry!

BoiledPiss · 17/03/2014 21:45

In answer to the question miles back, my (iphone) doesn't retry, like doctrine i have to hit try again

GoldieMumbles · 17/03/2014 21:46

"What is your current theory Goldie, or maybe the current theory amongst knowledgable aviation types?"

No consensus. There's too much new info that keeps coming to light that changes things. A nuance here, abit more data there. I think we'd generally believe it's inthe water somewhere. But that's the engineers in us. We're none of us psychologists so second guessing what was going through a hijacker's mind, or a suicidal pilot, is kind of beyond us.

"Etain, yes if the circuit breaker is pulled it can stop data recording, I think Goldie explained it to me upthread."

Yep.

Quinteszilla · 17/03/2014 21:51

Is it not strange how there would be NO life from any mobile phone, if they plane had landed, or even if it had crashed on land. If you one phone was on, undamaged, and started transmitting messages.....

NumanoidNancy · 17/03/2014 21:53

Thanks. Sad to think if it was a suicidal pilot he never even thought enough of his passengers to give them a chance to say goodbye.

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 17/03/2014 21:53

Not unless it crashed near a cell tower.

WillowPark · 17/03/2014 21:54

Phew, finally caught up after daring to not check MN all day.

I also think someone mainly a 'Stan country is holding out on info as it will expose either how crap their systems are or how incredibly advancefor they are. Either way, I feel incredibly sorry for the relatives left wondering where their loved ones are.

NumanoidNancy · 17/03/2014 21:54

Quint that has been answered so many times that people will be yelling RTFT (read the fucking thread) at you!

NumanoidNancy · 17/03/2014 21:55

What is a 'Stan country Willow?
