Having been in the position of having someone close to me go missing and experienced the tortuous weeks of wondering, hoping, speculating and searching before the found his body, I can assure you the last thing I am finding this is fucking entertaining. Hmm

I feel a certain amount of empathy with the families and wish a speedy conclusion as I can assure you the not knowing is excruciating.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 18/03/2014 17:39

Oh no, Sky News are showing photos of some of the passengers Sad. I hope they are still alive, although it seems almost impossible now.

magimedi · 18/03/2014 17:45

Flowers *trixymalixy How awful.

FabBakerGirl · 18/03/2014 17:49

Goldie don't give in to the bullies. By leaving the thread - through not your own choice - you are giving in to them. Please don't. You have been very kind, they have been very immature CakeFlowersWine.

I have mixed feelings about the families threatening to go on hunger strike to get more information. I think it is really unfair as their might not be anymore information to give. I understand their desperation, I really do, but if the information isn't there then it isn't there.

clux73 · 18/03/2014 17:58

Really hoping Goldie comes back.....

werenotreallyhere · 18/03/2014 17:59

Even if there is more info the Malaysian authorities may not be able to give it for good reason. For example these pings, if they thought there may be a chance that the aircraft was seized, and was on land and may be used again it made sense to not mention these pings in case someone started up the plane again, then they would know it wasn't at the bottom of the ocean if they got new pings. Now everyone knows about them if someone does have the plane they are definitely not going to chance starting it up again. However they couldn't widen the search without giving these pings as a reason. It must be a horribly hard job right now and they are coming under immense pressure from all sides.

Perihelion · 18/03/2014 17:59

Just like to point out that my non-tin hat, land in the centre of an atoll, Maldives theory of no communications and landing gear fucked, didn't include a hijack at the start. Rather, using up fuel and finding the calmest water to ditch in.

Maldives also has another airport to the South of Male. Gan.

ferrar · 18/03/2014 18:00

The info from the Malaysian Government seems to be all over the place.
I dont think that I can be bothered to surmise any more.

FabBakerGirl · 18/03/2014 18:01

The partner of a man on the plane is going to be on the BBC news shortly.

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 18/03/2014 18:03

Don't worry, am mostly a lurker and the last thing I get from this thread is that it's for entertainment purposes.

People concerned for others, desperately piecing together any and all clues to come to some sort of conclusion and resolution and HOPING are all very human, compassionate behaviours.

Crashing a thread to belittle everyone's motives is not.

Come back Goldie. Thanks

firstchoice · 18/03/2014 18:14

I don't find it 'entertaining'.
Very sad for the families.
Very worrying for all of us as 'there but for the grace of god' and all that... like most major news stories there is the attempt to understand and relate to it if possible as a way of processing it.
This one is especially hard to understand so people have been going over and over it to try to do so, I imagine.

wannaBe · 18/03/2014 18:16

Speculation is normal, although some of the conspiracy theories are a bit out there, and the talk of this being like 9/11 is a bit hysterical.

But it's the posts saying things like "finding the lack of information tortuous." from people who have no actual link with this other than the fact they have an interest in what happened and "finding it a bit addictive," (not exact words but similar, that show that for some this is a fact of pure rubbernecking. And actually, that's normal as well.... unfortunately.

It must be horrendous for the families who were led to think that the plane had crashed and that their loved ones were dead, to have now been told that perhaps the plane was highjacked and to wonder whether there's a chance they could be still alive, and the not knowing. But I am Hmm about threats of hunger strike because chances are that if they're not being given information it's because there isn't any information to give.

I think the answer will probably be a lot less involved/scary than the conspiracy theories tell us,. although there's every chance this plane may never be found, in which case it will remain an unsolved mystery and conspiracies will abound for years to come until in decades time someone finds it at the bottom of the indian ocean somewhere.

But I don't think this was about terrorism or threats or anything like that - even if there was a hint of that anywhere security levels would have been heightened at airports etc and they haven't been. If there's one thing we are vijilant about it's terrorism, and even if there's a hint the security services jump all over it.

livingzuid · 18/03/2014 18:16

How is this entertainment? What an odd comment to make Confused

I was thinking about this earlier as DH showed me on FB a disgusting joke about the plane that someone had put up. It is repulsive how people can find taking the piss out of something like this normal behaviour.

This is an unprecedented event and given that the majority of us have all been on a plane at one point or another, or are going to in the near future, it's understandable to ponder what on earth has happened. It's interesting to hear the different arguments and theories and also learn something in the process. Well I have learnt a lot anyway :)

And everyone I'm pretty sure has in the backs of their minds, and sometimes at the forefront, those families and passengers. Some I can't even contemplate because just the thought of being a passenger having to go through this makes me want to cry pregnancy hormones notwithstanding.

Out of all the debates that rage on MN, this one on the whole has been friendly, supportive and informative with a minimal amount of left field unpleasantness I reckon. So thanks everyone :)

KaleCrochet · 18/03/2014 18:21

@Perihelion how else would the plane end up at the maldives (if it did) if not a hijacking. It's pretty much the other direction from the route to Beijing. Any accidents/ technical issues the plane it would have diverted to an airport nearby the route, or crash somewhere along its normal flight path. If it's ended up somewhere wildly different from its usual track, that can only come about for deliberate, malevolent reasons.

jamtoast12 · 18/03/2014 18:21

I aggree I think wannabe. Entertaining was the wrong word but I think what was meant was that the scenarios are getting a bit far fetched and ott. I very much doubt it's anything terrorist either and definitely not buying this "someone knows something". Yes authorities may know more but if it's not confirmed then of course they can't say to the entire world watching. I don't think anyone knows what happened and is lying. I think the idea of a country covering something up is crazy - the entire world is watching!

AngelaDaviesHair · 18/03/2014 18:22

I don't think wannaBe is saying it is entertainment, only that some posters are treating it that way.

Not sure I'd go that far, but there have been some pretty unfortunate and ill-informed speculations about the pilots that have made me wince.

KaleCrochet · 18/03/2014 18:28

This story is captivating, but that's precisely because of the scale of human concern at the heart of it - for the victims and their families and their anguish. If this had been a cargo plane go missing with half a dozen people on board, it would be a tragedy for the small no of crew but the impact would have a much smaller reach.

livingzuid · 18/03/2014 18:29

But it's the posts saying things like "finding the lack of information tortuous." from people who have no actual link with this other than the fact they have an interest in what happened and "finding it a bit addictive," (not exact words but similar, that show that for some this is a fact of pure rubbernecking. And actually, that's normal as well.... unfortunately.

I don't think it is fair to make that judgement. This is a unique situation and these scenarios make people anxious and nervous. There are people posting who live around KL or have friends and family there, or have a connection with the area (me for one). There are people about to fly and are worried. You don't know what their motivations for posting might be.

This is hardly like people slowing down on the motorway to gawp at an accident. Because this has never happened before it is bound to capture the imagination. Because there is such little information it does make people even more nervous and start to imagine things. Since 9/11 in particular the world has been a bit of an anxious place ime (but that's a thread for another debate).

At the end of the day we just do not know what's going on and that's quite hard to deal with if you've got concerns or are worried for one reason or another.

livingzuid · 18/03/2014 18:31

Not sure I'd go that far, but there have been some pretty unfortunate and ill-informed speculations about the pilots that have made me wince

Apologies, X post. This is true and I'd agree. But I think people have been equally quick to point that out as well. Balance :)

lessonsintightropes · 18/03/2014 18:33

It's also an anxious business for frequent fliers (like me) and people who work in the aviation industry (father and brother). I thank God my brother has moved over to accident investigation now as I find this terrifying and just want (naturally enough) to understand what's going on.

Goldie has been wonderful (Thanks) in helping to demystify what is a technically complex situation and break it down into plain English for those of us who have those worries.

KaleCrochet · 18/03/2014 18:35

Where is Goldie? don't think she's going to be back Sad

Virtualhaggling · 18/03/2014 18:35

Just catching up with the news on Ukraine, which is sickeningly worrying. Could this whole plane 'spectacle' hVe been a massive diversion (by the Russians) so people pay less attention to what's going on in Russia?
