MB i have a sister of 12 and i can say quite catagoricly (sp) that there would be no way she could be smoking, drinking and having sex without one of us knowing!

like you all when i read that paper i looked at her and just could nto imagine how on earth she would cope wiht a child of her own.
i am also from a very large family (im eldest of 10) and so my sistr is very mature for her age and also has experiance of being around babies....that does not mean she could care for one herself.

Blandmum · 13/05/2006 12:31

but at 9? Now?

How many 9 year olds are out of their parents sight nowerdays?

How many 11 year olds get to go to parties where they get pissed?

I was out of my mothers sight at that age...she was also a good mum. But things have changed (for a range of reasons)

SparklyGothKat · 13/05/2006 12:31

At 11, I wasn't allowed to drink, smoke or even out to parties, a 11 year old doesn;t know what they want out of life, I didn't, and its only now that I am an adult that I know. She will be 20 with an 8 year old, I am 27 with an 8 year old, and I sometimes can't believe that my baby is 8. When her baby is 11 she will realise that she wasn;t as mature as she thought.

Blandmum · 13/05/2006 12:33

WOW fattymama.....one of 10! Smile Dh is one of 4 and I thought that his dm had a good sense of humour Smile

Blandmum · 13/05/2006 12:34

And while no-one is saying that she must be a bad mother at 11, she undoubtibly would be a better one at 16.

SparklyGothKat · 13/05/2006 12:35

My 8 year old isn;t allowed out of my sight, he can play in the garden and in the house, I don;t allow him to wander the streets. He goes to parties, where there are parents present. Actually, was there no parents at this party where she concieved the baby????!!!!!

Blandmum · 13/05/2006 12:36

SGC, that is a question to horrible to consider, either answer sugesting a level of disregard for safety boarding on unhealthy.

waterfalls · 13/05/2006 12:37

Its a sad fact that there will always be parents who let their kids run riot, I live in an area where 3yr old are let out to play on their own in the streetSad

suzywong · 13/05/2006 12:38

The whole thing of it reaching the paper is utterly disgusting, especially as her mother is parading her for money like a circus freak.

And yes, we all want this baby's life to be a happy one, we are a tad concerned about the smoking and the lack of (grand)parental concern chiefly because it is a fair bet that the 34year old will end up bringing this child up for the most part and she clearly does know her arse from her elbow when it comes to doing the right thing for her kids.

fattiemumma · 13/05/2006 12:38

yeah MB. im oldest at 25 (ooh nearly 26, i can feel the grey hair growing Sad)

youngest is 4, actually a year younger than my Ds! lol

no one is saying she will be a bad mum. she may be a great mum.....just so long as she doesnt follow her own mothers example!

nightowl · 13/05/2006 12:38

i wasnt even allowed out of the house on my own when i was 11!

blueteddy · 13/05/2006 12:39

OMG, that is awful! She is still a child & drinking & smoking at 11! And her 34 year old mother is proud!Shock
The mother is a year older than me & about to become a Grandmother!ShockShock

Blandmum · 13/05/2006 12:40

26? You are but a child! Grin

I am old enough to be your mother Shock and I would have been 17 at the time Shock Grin

compo · 13/05/2006 12:40

But I think it's naive to think that an 11 year old can be watched at all times. Smoking behind the bike sheds at this age does go on

fattiemumma · 13/05/2006 12:40

ahh but 17 is acceptable Wink

Blandmum · 13/05/2006 12:43

Quite, but not shagging, pissed, behind the bike sheds?

This is obviously not a single lapse in otherwise reasonable parenting. Or indeed, a very willful, wayward child pushing the boundaries of reasonable parenting.

The mother is quite accepting of this behaviour and seems to think that it is reasonable. Well it isn't.

SparklyGothKat · 13/05/2006 12:43

so do I WF, I have seen toddlers in nappies out the front with their siblings who are at DS's school and all younger than DS. I know that one lady let her kids do as they liked, one day, when she was getting gigy with her fella during the day, her 7 year old daughter disapppeared, her brother was in tears, the mother just told him to look for her.. Shock its disgusting that people don;t take responibility for their children. My children are the light of my life, I would die for them, and I can't imagine what it must be like to have to deal with an 11 year old pregnant, smoking and drinking. How can a parent be proud, for one thing I would have killed the boy involved. I don't even think I knew exactly what sex involved in her age.

PinkTulips · 13/05/2006 12:49

i wonder how often girls as young as this get pregnant and nobody hears about it as they are rushed to have a termination? i wouldn't be surprised if its alot more common than any of us would like to imagine.

appalled at the girls mother though, 11 is still a child in anyones eyes, how on earth could any mother let their 11 year old sit there smoking fags at all, let alone when the poor child is pragnant. the woman should have her kids taken away, if shes allowed to have any impact on this babies upbringing history is just going to repeat itself.

so sad

waterfalls · 13/05/2006 12:49

Also not long after I moved in I had Avon Calling, it was a young girl, no older than 6, struggling to carry a huge pile of avon books, asking me if I wanted to order anythingShock

who in their right mind would let a young girl go knocking on strangers doorsShock

compo · 13/05/2006 12:49

I'm not saying I condone this particular mother's behaviour!! Just a bit surprised at some of the sweeping generalisations on this thread, like 'I would know if my 11 year old daughter was smoking' for example - that's not a direct quote btw

Blandmum · 13/05/2006 12:54

Well I would because I would smell it on her. It lingers, does cigarette smoke. I can even smell it on the books of some of the kids I teach. I also smell it on the kids who nip out behind the bike sheds!

compo · 13/05/2006 12:54

But if the parents smoke it could just come from them

fattiemumma · 13/05/2006 12:56

this i true compo....but it think its a litle easier to know if your 11 year old is out getting drunk!!

Blandmum · 13/05/2006 12:57

True. but since I don't, I would be able to tell PDQ. And then would do my utmost to stop it....not let her puff away on 20 a day
