Scots would live longer if....

.... they ate like the English. www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-15561501 And so would the Welsh and Northern Irish as well. So put down your deep fried Mars Bars O Celtic brethren, pick up a Yorkshire Pudding and do your arteries a favour. What could be controversial about that?

With slices of white pudding? Supersize me...

GlaikitFizzog · 03/11/2011 13:41

sospanfach even I think a deep fried pizza is a tiny winey step too fat!!

GlaikitFizzog · 03/11/2011 13:42

typo! too far!! :o

sospanfach · 03/11/2011 13:42

they do exist though, don't they....I've never tried one...

WitchOfWoo · 03/11/2011 13:43

It's not what we eat but worrying about it does the damage.

seb1 · 03/11/2011 13:43

Deluxe flavoured Arran cheese yumm

LaFilleSurLePont · 03/11/2011 13:43

Has anyone mentioned morning rolls yet? You can't beat those.

sospanfach · 03/11/2011 13:44

no, you can't beat Tunnocks Teacakes either.....

seb1 · 03/11/2011 13:45

Scottish tablet

GlaikitFizzog · 03/11/2011 13:45

kando do you really want to start this debate :o!!

Dad makes his with corned beef and cubed potatoes, cooked until they fall apart!

I use casserole beef, onions, stock and potatoes whack it all in the slow cooker the nigth before let it mush down. Serve with oatcakes and a glass of milk!! Mmmmmm heaven on a plate!!

Down here they use sausages, chicken, bacon (think breakfast leftovers) and any veg going off at the bottom of the fridge!!

WitchOfWoo · 03/11/2011 13:45

Butteries (rowies), LaFille?

With butter and jam. Smile

OriginalPoster · 03/11/2011 13:45

The best stovies I had were made by a relative in Aberdeenshire. My mum asked for the recipe, 'weeel, first hing in the inyins...' the rest involved miscellaneous bits of game, lots of black pepper, chicken stock and potatoes.

LaFilleSurLePont · 03/11/2011 13:47

I've never tried a butterie or rowie before. I'm a Glaswegian.I'm loyal to my morning rolls.Grin

That said in the interests of scientific research I'll have to track them down and sample one.

seb1 · 03/11/2011 13:47

Do you have a roll with egg and tattie scone with your irn bru for a hangover?

OriginalPoster · 03/11/2011 13:48

Witch

Do you spread your butteries on the rough or smooth side? I like a bit of rough, and you get more butter on that way. Maybe the healthy long living Englanders are spreading on the smooth side!

GlaikitFizzog · 03/11/2011 13:48

Oh how could I forget Aberdeen Rowies!! Half your dail calories in one compact salty doughy lardy buttery lovliness! Only available from one bakery in aberdeen. Accept no immitations!

LaFilleSurLePont · 03/11/2011 13:49

I love Tunnocks teacakes, and caramel logs.Caramel wafers are pretty good too,but I favour their messier cousin.

LaPruneDeMaTante · 03/11/2011 13:49

You have to get butteries from the NE. They're different down south.
(Actually they're different from when I wis a lassie, I think they used lard then.)

GlaikitFizzog · 03/11/2011 13:49

Witch are you a Granite City girl??

GlaikitFizzog · 03/11/2011 13:50

My mum brings me aid packages of Rowies from Aitkens Baker LaPrune! They still use lard!

LaFilleSurLePont · 03/11/2011 13:51

Stop tempting me with delicious goodies,Seb.Envy

I love a morning roll with egg and potato scone, even more so if you add a slice of black pudding too,but I don't drink alcohol,so i can't use a hangover as an excuse.

WitchOfWoo · 03/11/2011 13:51

Smooth side mostly but sometimes toast them and cut them open, posh like.

Check all the Scots out! The OP's report said we ought to worry and we are all having a food ceilidh at the very thought of tablet and butteries!

Has anyone had the tablet ice cream from the ice cream shop in St Andrews?

LaPruneDeMaTante · 03/11/2011 13:52

Ooh. Ooh. Is it anywhere near Aiberdeen station?
I only ever go to change trains there.

OriginalPoster · 03/11/2011 13:52

They don't freeze well, though Glaikit, must be all that fat..

All together now

LaPruneDeMaTante · 03/11/2011 13:53

Tablet ice cream? What genius thought of that?
Hmm, I have an ice-cream maker..... has it got bits in?
