Scots would live longer if....

CogitoErgoSometimes · 03/11/2011 08:15

.... they ate like the English. www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-15561501 And so would the Welsh and Northern Irish as well. So put down your deep fried Mars Bars O Celtic brethren, pick up a Yorkshire Pudding and do your arteries a favour. What could be controversial about that?

Cogito

Haggis never kills, it just bares its teeth.

Butteries, however, are fierce if you handle them straight out of the toaster...

scaryteacher · 03/11/2011 14:22

I think they pay some benefits in food vouchers here in Belgium; seems to work.

coldcomfortHeart · 03/11/2011 14:26

Butteries do get feisty when hot. They need (more) butter and golden syrup on them.

or should that read:

my uncle calls them death discs!

MmeLindor. · 03/11/2011 14:26

ooooooooooooh, how did I miss this thread? Did ye no sound the Tartan Klaxon?

Stovies. Right. Gies a recipe. Never made them before. Ma weans have never had stovies :(

Butteries. Although, did you see that TV programme recently where they showed how to make them. Did kind of put me off a bit.

redlac · 03/11/2011 14:28

lorne sausage and stovies give me the boak and potted haugh with that jelly stuff on it!

however tunnocks tea cakes, caramel logs, Irn Bru, Mackie ice cream, tablet, macaroon, highland toffee, well fired rolls, scottish blend tea and I'm mmmmmmmm

LaFilleSurLePont · 03/11/2011 14:30

How can you hate Lorne sausage?Shock

NormanTebbit · 03/11/2011 14:31

i think people would just find another way of getting a tenner.

There was a study a few years ago linking economic deprivation in the early part of the 20th century to Glasgow's low life expectancy - I think it's 57 for men in Shettleston- there is a genetic predisposition to heart disease due to this deprivation.

DP certainly has a love of square sausage, morning rolls, potato scones, italian ice cream, fritter rolls, sausage suppers, Greggs cheese pies, pies in general etc etc

I am english but a convert to egg and tattie scones in a morning roll on the Sunday morning. Cup of tea and the papers - bliss

redlac · 03/11/2011 14:31

I know! Everyone asks me that but it gives me the dry boak

seasickgal · 03/11/2011 14:35

I noticed lucky tatties were mentioned. Where do you find these fabled sweeties? My Dad eulogises aboot them!

GlaikitFizzog · 03/11/2011 14:39

MmeLindor, for stovies you require:

twa ingins, sliced
1kg of casserole beef
8-10 large tatties, cubed
2 pints beef stock
lots of pepper
salt to taste if needed

Fry onions, until caramelised, add beef and brown. Add potatoes, salt and pepper and stock bring to the boil, cover and leave to simmer for ages until the potatoes go mushy and the liquid simmers down. I do mine over night in the slow cooker for the next day and Ihave to take the lid off for an hour or so just to let thhe last of the liquid evaporate.

Serve with oakcakes (and beetroot if you must, bleurgh) and a glass of cold milk! Yummmmmmmmmmy!!

LaFilleSurLePont · 03/11/2011 14:39

You can get them in many sweet shops. Or online shops such as <a class="break-all" href="http://www.glickmans.co.uk/cgi-bin/trolleyed_public.cgi?action=showprod_15&url=www.glickmans.co.uk/shop/12/index.htm" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">here.

mustdash · 03/11/2011 14:40

Norman Tebbit that Daily Mash piece is genius. I have tears rolling down my cheeks.

Grin

Does anyone seriously think that telling Scottish people to be more like the English is ever a good idea?

midnightexpress · 03/11/2011 14:41

Ooooooh rowies are my equivalent of Proust's madeleines. We used to eat them with about an inch of butter on top from Kelly of Cults when we went to stay at my granny's in the 70s. Mmmmmmmm.

My late father (late, no doubt, on account of his appalling diet) used to dream of mealie jimmies (we lived in SE England). One hogmanany his (Glaswegian) pal told him he'd get some when he was up for Christmas and bring them along to the party. My dad was beside himself with excitement for days before, and then they arrived. With raisins in. He really never got over the disappointment, I don't think.

GlaikitFizzog · 03/11/2011 14:41

seasickgal lucky tatties not to be eaten by those with gum bumpers!!

GlaikitFizzog · 03/11/2011 14:42

Kellys of Cults did my Wedding cake!!

LaFilleSurLePont · 03/11/2011 14:43

Here sorry.

BoffinMum · 03/11/2011 14:45

Has anyone on here actually eaten a deep fried Mars bar, and if so, am I missing anything?

GlaikitFizzog · 03/11/2011 14:47

Not a mars bar but I'vwe had a curly wurly and maltesers. Recommend the curly wurly, but the maltesers weren;t man enought!!

BoffinMum · 03/11/2011 14:48

It's one thing I want to try before I die then!

OriginalPoster · 03/11/2011 14:48

Glaikit

Thanks for stovies recipe, will be trying it out asap...

Am enjoying this thread. I live in England now, and am not normally homesick, but I am today!

MmeLindor. · 03/11/2011 14:48

Boffin
I noticed them on the menu of our local chipper last time I was home, have never seen them before. Was so tempted to try it out.

They do deep fried pizza too

And to think that most of the original fish and chip shops were run by Italian families - their Nonnas must have been turning in their graves to hear of deep fried pizza.

MmeLindor. · 03/11/2011 14:49

Thanks, Glaikitt. Have beef in the freezer so will try out this weekend.

OriginalPoster · 03/11/2011 14:49

I used to eat deep fried haggis from the chipper when I was a student with no heating in my flat. I was skinny as a rake, too Confused

RoxyRobin · 03/11/2011 14:50

noeyedear - Give me back those sausage rolls! The proof that they're mine is here

CogitoErgoSometimes · 03/11/2011 14:52

The Scottish family that ran our local chippy when I lived in West Yorkshire used to reheat their pies, not by zapping them in the microwave but by popping them in the basket and plunging them into the deep fat fryer. :)
