Enfield riots?

Just seen on Twitter and in a few articles like this, that there are meant to be plans for a riot in Enfield tonight and riot police are in the town centre?

Used to live there, and got family there (luckily a fair distance from the centre), but fucking hell! What the hell is going on?

Meg, I would tend to agree with you there even though we would probably be accused of being victorians!

I ventured into Enfield today, It was all shut off and lots of police about, It was quite depressing, however the sense of community of people trying to get along was really present.

"eg Krispy Kreme or Nandos on fire"

Yeah, what is it with Twitters obsession with fast food places?

Harrow high street has been evacuated I believe!

tuffie · 08/08/2011 19:24

As EdithWeston says, we will have to wait to see the report on what actually happened re. the shooting of Duggan. I have no truck with the rioters or their attitude. I hope the police do not come out looking like idiots, but I am beginning to have my doubts, and it will seriously damage their credibility.

It seems some people on bikes are being stopped and their bikes are being taken from them. Robbed that is. Has civil order broken down in London? My husband was walking home as bus couldn't go any further and out of a side street came a group of about twenty with hoodies all pulled up. A car with tinted windows alongside. Gangland thugs are not outraged about injustice, inequity or any such things.

I'm moving to London shortly. Can't believe what's going on.

Harrow? bloody hell, used to live near there

oops.

Obnoxio · 08/08/2011 19:57

If the young black men of London were not so oppressd then it is likely that this typ of situation would not occur!!

Do you know that some of them can only access a library 6 days a week.

icancancan · 08/08/2011 19:58

where are our 'leaders' whilst all of this is happening - swanning about in California and Italy whilst 'rome burns' ...

Empusa · 08/08/2011 19:58

Has anyone heard that Birmingham is being hit too?

OP posts:
Lilithmoon · 08/08/2011 19:58

Does anyone know what is happening in Birmingham and Leeds?

Obnoxio · 08/08/2011 20:00

Yeah, I've just come back from there. It's still a shit hole.

PainSnail · 08/08/2011 20:01

Does anyone know what's happening in peckham? My friend lives there and the last update I had from her, a bus had been set on fire. Then nothing.

In my part of london its just started raining quite heavily. If that could continue it might help to diffuse things a bit. Theres a lovely rainbow too, which is quite nice. Takes the edge off the day.

Empusa · 08/08/2011 20:01

Seen photos of a crowd of police outside Hayes station.

Empusa · 08/08/2011 20:03

Apparently this is in Peckham

Awomancalledhorse · 08/08/2011 20:03

Pain, Peckham Rye is apparently a 'no-go' zone (few shops on fire still and trains are not stopping.

hope your friend is ok.

Obnoxio · 08/08/2011 20:03

@ Painsnail. Part of the reason we have less riots over here as opposed to our European neighbours is due to the weather. Look at many of the riots during the past 10-15 years. they all happened during the summer months. I guess 'Stabby Mc Chav' does not like rain.

janelikesjam · 08/08/2011 20:06

Obnoxio, you are very funny, its good to laugh Grin (I honestly felt very frightened earlier).

I think the politicians on holiday will get crucified on their return for their continued absence. I mean Boris is coming home in the morning (of the third day), I have no idea about Cameron ...

teejwood · 08/08/2011 20:10

pain all public transport halted around peckham. some people allegedly stuck between rioters and police
bus set on fire in front of fire station Angry
this from twitter on how you are being treated by the thugs if you are a cyclist: "Recommend cyclists avoid Peckham - saw two cycle muggings after police warned cyclists to get away sharpish."
shop beside the gregs at the bottom of Rye Lane burnt out - whole block not looking too clever. oh - that would be beside the post office and Barclays - wonder if they are intending to come back later? Hmm
kids swigging from bottles of looted cognac going up southampton way

oh and two very uneasy kids in my house.
Angry

jane good point - the politicians - where is Peckham's local MP exactly????? Oh that's right - she needs bodyguards and a bullet proof vest before popping round to the High Street for a kebab Hmm
