I think you can also watch video of each of the individual miners rescues from \link{http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-11170852\here} on the BBC - just click on the miner's picture and it gives you an option to watch their rescue

Oh, thanks!

Just googled Pinera, and this is interesting:

"On January 28, Piñera renounced his political affiliation to National Renewal, becoming an independent. Within the party bylaws, it is stipulated that members who are elected to the presidency must renounce their association in order to govern the country fairly, foremost with the interest of the people, not with the interest of a political party or particular political philosophy"

That strikes me as quite a good idea, in a way.

so which woman turned up to the Yonni Barrios rescue - the wife or the mistress?

Habbibu · 14/10/2010 10:54

Think it was the mistress, though there was much confusion.

oh - \link{http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-11539783\here is the video} of the last rescuer to leave the mine.

They did show all 6 coming up, and they all got cheers and claps, but the biggest attention was on him (including from his fellow rescuers - their reaction towards him was greater than that towards the others - I guess the fact that he was the "first man down",( and therefore down there the longest) and also because he was the last man out.

Me too - I don't think I've fully recovered yet (nor from the celebratory wine induced hangover Blush).

MAT, I saw that bit about the people who had quietly contributed to the expertise. I think one man, or one firm (who rang up and told the Chileans that he thought that he had the drill they needed) was called Brandon Fisher and I think his name is an example.

MaMoTTaT · 14/10/2010 18:00

yes - that's one I saw mentioned the other day Zebedee.

Just seen a report on the BBC website that says 2 or 3 of the miners could leave hospital today Smile

There was quite a funny interview with one of the medics at silly o clock this morning. The man interviewing was saying how hard it may be when they just want to gorge on fatty food and alcohol and the medic was looking at hiom as if he was a fool. He said 'well of course they will be having a drink, wouldn't you!?'

HabbiBOOOO · 14/10/2010 20:40

Guardian's take here quite annoying - so - gasp - in the earl,y days there was panic and fighting and division. Well, no shit. Of course there bloody was. Point is, they got themselves together and hung in there.

MaMoTTaT · 14/10/2010 20:53

no shit sherlock hey habib.

hmm lets see, you go to work 600m below ground, there's an almighty crashing of rcoks as your exit is blocked 100's of metres above you (it must have been bloody loud even though they weren't in the immediate area).

You make it to an emergency shelter where there's ermm, lets see, 2 days worth of food rations. The hours turn into days, turn into a week......and so on, you tink you're going to die down there.

Yeah - everyone's going to be really chilled out aren't they Hmm

Apparently it was Thatcher's birthday yesterday. Just as the world was celebrating the rescue of 33 miners... Grin

HabbiBOOOO · 14/10/2010 22:15

...and lauding them as heroes!

MaMoTTaT · 15/10/2010 11:38

yay I see 3 have been discharged from hospital and gone home, and more expected to leave today Smile

MaMoTTaT · 16/10/2010 02:07
