Do you have a floor-drobe?? (Aka where do your worn but not dirty clothes go?)

Hi wise mumsnetters,

Bit of a weird one - but as the title says really…where do the clothes go that you’ve worn but don’t yet need a wash?

For context I don’t like putting them back in drawers/wardrobe. I’m aware some people may find this strange but I just don’t like it!! Sometimes they smell a bit of cooking, or the bottom of trousers might have been in a puddle. If money was no issue and the world didn’t need saving then I’d happily wash them (love freshly washed clothes!!) - but not the case.

Currently they end up draped over the end of the bed, on a radiator or on the floor!!

any ideas??

Yes I have a chair in my room that these clothes get hung on the back of.

Paaseitjes · 26/11/2025 21:15

Yup. I got over door hooks for every door which helps. By the time the hooks at full, it's time to do laundry

fruitj · 26/11/2025 21:17

I have a big chair in my bedroom which gets used for half worn clothes. I never sit in it!

IsThisLifeNow · 26/11/2025 21:20

Yep, I have an ottoman exactly for this purpose!

SeaAndStars · 26/11/2025 21:20

I have a spare washing basket under the bed that they go in.

BlueOceanFish · 26/11/2025 21:21

On a chair in my room.

Im with you I do not like putting them back in the wardrobe, unless a dress and I’ll hang that back up.

rainbowsandraspberrygin · 26/11/2025 21:29

Ooh some great ideas there!! The chair - of course. We had that in the last house and I’d forgotton.

like the idea of hooks and an ottoman

spare wash basket good idea too.

thanks 🙏

We have a small towel stand in the bedroom, like the one in this photo (not exactly the same, ours is about 10 years old now)

On the bathroom radiator. The laundry is in the bathroom so if I don't get round to wearing them again within a couple of days, I can just put them on the washing pile.

FenceBooksCycle · 26/11/2025 22:04

I used to have a chair-drobe. Sometimes I still.do but mostly if I am not too overwhelmed with too much other stuff going on I manage to take a moment for this: there are now 3 decorative hooks on the wall next to the wardrobe. Stuff that is worn but clean enough to wear again goes on a hook inside out. When getting dressed I check the hooks for something I last wore at least 2 days ago - wouldn't want to wear it two days running! If I got dressed into something from the hooks it goes into the laundry I have a general two-wears-only-before-washing rule.

ticktockitsNCtime · 26/11/2025 22:04

I wash anything smelly, and worn but unsmelly things just go straight back in the wardrobe.
I never know where to keep used socks, though. I don’t wash them with every wear as I don’t really get smelly feet, but as I wear them around the house, they might pick up bits on the underneath, so i don’t want to put them back in the sock drawer. They always end up scrunched up on the windowsill.

Edited

Similar, I have a spare wash basket on top of my drawers and worn once not dirty stuff goes in there.

Socks are single wear!

I don’t like putting clothes that have been worn back in the wardrobe. Therefore I have a Valet Rod on my closet so any worn but could be worn again clothes get hung on there.

The correct purpose of a Valet Rod is to hang your chosen outfit on before dressing. However I use mine to store clothes that could be worn again.

Not in my house 😬I realise that might be seen as a bit disgusting!

I mean, it’s also the fact they’re ending up on the windowsill too, surely just chuck them in the wash?

Mine go in the hall with the shoes.

Hmm that’s a good idea. I hadn’t thought of doing that.

Radiatorvalves · 26/11/2025 22:17

I call it a chairdrobe 😬. It’s fairly well draped!

Echobelly · 26/11/2025 22:18

I don't tend to have much worn but not dirty clothing, but when I do it goes over the foot of the bed.

Netcam · 26/11/2025 22:20

I have two

AgentPidge · 26/11/2025 22:21

Yep. Floordrobe here, and a chair.

Nofilter · 26/11/2025 22:24

I have a clothes horse I hang them on..

HonoriaBulstrode · 26/11/2025 22:24

On the chair. Or if there are already several things on the chair, hung over the banister on the landing.

If I'm putting on a wash I usually gather everything up and chuck it in.

wandawaves · 26/11/2025 22:31

I have a coat/hat stand in my room for this exact purpose. I love it, and I love that it is airing them out, rather than them being draped on a chair or whatever.
