Do you have a floor-drobe?? (Aka where do your worn but not dirty clothes go?)

Hi wise mumsnetters,

Bit of a weird one - but as the title says really…where do the clothes go that you’ve worn but don’t yet need a wash?

For context I don’t like putting them back in drawers/wardrobe. I’m aware some people may find this strange but I just don’t like it!! Sometimes they smell a bit of cooking, or the bottom of trousers might have been in a puddle. If money was no issue and the world didn’t need saving then I’d happily wash them (love freshly washed clothes!!) - but not the case.

Currently they end up draped over the end of the bed, on a radiator or on the floor!!

any ideas??

Really! So you wash jeans, dresses, jackets, cardigans after one wear ? Bizarre!

Apart from my winter jacket then yes everything only gets worn once, hardly bizarre to not wear something that I’ve already worn before!

Even, like, jeans or a big chunky sweater?

Yes, apart from a winter coat/jacket, I wash everything else if I’ve worn it

thecalmsea · 27/11/2025 10:54

I put a row of hooks on the inside of each wardrobe door and on the back of the bedroom door for these things, mainly hoodies and trousers which I wear a couple of times. The kids have baskets in the bottom of their wardrobes to try and avoid the floordrobe.

Washing everything after one wear is expensive, bad for the environment and not great for the longevity of your clothes.

Do you own 100% wool jumpers?

Ramblethroughthebrambles · 27/11/2025 12:31

If I'm going to wear again the next day, then over the bedding chest at the end of the bed. Otherwise I hang them at the end of the rail in the wardrobe so I know they've already been worn.

Ridiculous who washes a smart tailored dress /trousers / jeans after one wear not many I bet plus it ruins your clothes not to mention the environment

Booksandwine80 · 27/11/2025 14:39

It goes back in the wardrobe or drawer-if my trousers had been in a puddle or smelt of cooking it would go in the wash!

If it’s been worn then it needs to be washed!
No way am I wearing clothes that hasn’t been washed once worn.
My adult daughters are exactly the same, they won’t wear anything twice

Comefromaway · 27/11/2025 15:08

Anything that smelt of cooking would be spot cleaned with neat vodka in a spray bottle (and armpits/crotches sprayed too) and hung inside out on my wardrobe door for 24 hours to air. If it still smelt after 24 hours it goes into the wash.

Jumpers that can't be hung would be sprayed with vodka then folded inside out on my window seat for 24 hours.

After the 24 hours if they no longer smell they go back into the wardrobe. I have cedar wood balls in there to deter moths.

Anything that had dragged in a puddle would go into the wash.

I get roughly 6 wears out of jeans, 3-4 wears out of trousers and 4-5 wears out of wool/cotton jumpers. Anything that has been next to my armpits with no under layer only one wear usually except occasionally a delicate item if it can be vodka treated.

i don’t have time or the brain power for vodka spraying and remembering hours etc especially for a family’s worth of clothes.

also just to clarify if my trousers had been dragged through a puddle then I would likely wash them unless I just needed something for a school run/muddy walk. But what I mean is those that just touch the floor a bit. Obviously if really dirty then I’d wash them as I don’t want them making floors etc mucky.

They must do loads of washing!!! I’d be doing a few loads a day if that was my lot. Various uniforms, pe kids, comfy clothes, PJs

do you wash PJs after one wash?

in the evening I sometimes get cold and put a hoody on until bedtime - would you was that??

angry cat GIF

I use the back or arms of the cat's chair. If there ends up being too much stuff and I need to use the seat of the chair, I can’t just throw it on there. I have to fold it flat so it’s not lumpy for the cat to lay on. Or else I will get a ‘look'

As I say I think you are in the minority. I have never known anyone wash a smart tailored dress or trousers, jacket etc after one wear! How do you get on with dry clean only? You must be in the cleaners 24/7 I find it totally bizarre

Exactly utter madness !

Comefromaway · 27/11/2025 22:59

No brain power needed. I take my clothes off & spray them immediately (I’ve got quite a bit of stuff that doesn’t handle being wasted too often like wool, silk & dry clean only fabrics. At the same time I put the day before a clothes back in the wardrobe.

dh does what he likes with his clothes. My kids are grown now but ds is very sweaty and so his t shirts are washed afte 1 day.

dd mostly wears sports wear.

FletchFan · 27/11/2025 23:03

I put things back in the wardrobe and spray with Febreze.

FletchFan · 27/11/2025 23:06

If the pits don't smell and I've not spilt half my lunch down myself it gets worn again.

I hate doing washing. I'd rather do it as little as possible.

mjcosy · 28/11/2025 11:07

I have an IKEA coat hanger for this purpose! Also eyeing a Samsung air dresser (which I don't think I will ever afford) for this reason - chuck half dirty clothes in, get them out smelling clean and back in wardrobe. Some day, sigh.

renovationqueen · 28/11/2025 11:29

One of my more genius ideas was including a wire basket at the bottom of ikea wardrobes specifically for worn but not dirty clothes - if you have the space do this!

Icanthinkformyselfthanks · 28/11/2025 11:35

No, in my dressing area opposite my wardrobes I have hooks on the wall to hang clothes which are worn but not in need of washing yet. On that same wall I have shoe storage.
