Do you have a floor-drobe?? (Aka where do your worn but not dirty clothes go?)

Hi wise mumsnetters,

Bit of a weird one - but as the title says really…where do the clothes go that you’ve worn but don’t yet need a wash?

For context I don’t like putting them back in drawers/wardrobe. I’m aware some people may find this strange but I just don’t like it!! Sometimes they smell a bit of cooking, or the bottom of trousers might have been in a puddle. If money was no issue and the world didn’t need saving then I’d happily wash them (love freshly washed clothes!!) - but not the case.

Currently they end up draped over the end of the bed, on a radiator or on the floor!!

any ideas??

I have a chairdrobe

MonkeyPuddle · 26/11/2025 22:34

Yep, I work 13 hour shifts and have to go and come home in my own clothes, I change into uniform once I’m at work. So I wear my own clothes of a maximum of 3 hours a day, they get draped over the ottoman and reworn, not a cat in hells chance am I washing clothes after 3 hours of use.

Untailored · 26/11/2025 22:34

Mine go back in the wardrobe or drawer. Surely if they’re clean enough to be worn again, then they’re clean enough to go in the wardrobe.

thebookofmarmite · 26/11/2025 22:34

I’ve got those over the door hooks but hung on the inside of the wardrobe and that’s where I hang things like this. Don’t have to look at them that way but they’re not in with the newly laundered clothes.

We have a small towel stand in the bedroom, like the one in this photo (not exactly the same, ours is about 10 years old now)

I like this. I might look into it. Might need bigger fo two of us though

No I can’t do it. I guess anything worn for a short period inside. But if I’ve worn for a day or it’s picked up smells then I don’t want it mixing with clean. I have sensitive smell

I have a coat/hat stand in my room for this exact purpose. I love it, and I love that it is airing them out, rather than them being draped on a chair or whatever.

That’s a good idea

I wash anything smelly, and worn but unsmelly things just go straight back in the wardrobe.
I never know where to keep used socks, though. I don’t wash them with every wear as I don’t really get smelly feet, but as I wear them around the house, they might pick up bits on the underneath, so i don’t want to put them back in the sock drawer. They always end up scrunched up on the windowsill.

no!! Socks for the wash daily! Same with pants. They’re small enough that it doesn’t matter!

My socks are often only worn for an hour or two a day though, when I layer them up inside wellies or walking boots. I’m not convinced they need to be washed after that! They don’t even smell!

BrendaSmall · 26/11/2025 23:00

Anything I’ve worn regardless of how long, gets put in the wash basket!
Never do I wear something twice without washing it

If it smells, I wash it. If it's wet, I'd put it on the radiator or in the airing cupboard. Everything else goes back in the wardrobe or straight in the wash.

TheChosenTwo · 26/11/2025 23:53

If something of mine smells of food/cooking oil etc it goes in the wash, same if my trousers have puddle water at the bottom of the legs.
If they’re clean enough to wear again they just get hung up in the wardrobe.
Baffled that socks are being reworn though, they take up literally no room in a wash basket/machine/dryer.

Me too!

SizeableBadBoys · 26/11/2025 23:55

I have an ottoman too that gets clothes not ready for wash chucked on it. If I have room in the wash they go in, if not they're ready and first in line for the next wear.

LoudPlumDog · 27/11/2025 00:00

I can’t stand clothes just lying around, so we do a load daily of all the worn items.

Even, like, jeans or a big chunky sweater?

Yes I have a chair in my room that these clothes get hung on the back of.

Ditto lol

Really! So you wash jeans, dresses, jackets, cardigans after one wear ? Bizarre!

I've got this mirror KARMSUND black, Standing mirror, 40x167 cm - IKEA UK which has hooks on the back you can hang things on, they are hidden by the mirror, it's so handy as I needed a full length mirror anyway.

What a good idea!

Doesn’t it ruin your clothes?? As much as I love clean clothes I just couldn’t do it. Would cost loads too for a family.

sometimes I may put a hoody on for an hour if cold or change my trousers to pop out if I need to look smarter. Would you wash those?

OP posts:
YellowCherry · 27/11/2025 07:20

I have a shelf in the wardrobe that is specifically for this purpose. So I can put worn clothes back in the wardrobe, but they don't "mix" with the clean clothes.
