🌷"Moving in May" - with Flylady🌷

BloomingHazel · 30/04/2025 22:30

Join us in building routines to make housework more manageable. Start out with the baby steps, add in the missions in each zone, it will eventually become second nature. Jump right in, you're never left behind!

This is a long running thread, but we are a friendly bunch and all are welcome to join in 😊

May's habit of the month is daily loving movement. Whatever gets you moving, whether it's walking, dancing, cycling, gardening etc. 🚲🕺💃🏊

Do NOT sign up for the Flylady emails - it's an excessive amount sent every day.
There are Baby Steps for starting out, add one thing at a time to start good habits and routines.
There are 5 zones that we will rotate through, don't worry about finishing it all this month, it'll come around again next month! Flylady is NOT about perfectionism!
Daily missions: each day of the week has a different mission.

  • Monday: Home Blessing (or as we call it, home bleugh)
  • Tuesday: plan & play
  • Wednesday: anti-procrastination
  • Thursday: errand day
  • Friday: clean car & purse out a week. It's also date night (with your significant other, or friends, or yourself!)
  • Saturday: family fun day
  • Sunday: renew your spirit

Common acronyms we use:

  • LOL: load of laundry (washing is certainly NOT funny!)
  • DW: dishwasher, we are not rotating wives by any means, although an extra pair of hands could come in handy sometimes 😆
  • LMS: lose/lost my shit
  • DNLMS: did not lose my shit

There are more, feel free to ask us to explain something. I'll try to update links every day, although if you can, it's worth downloading the app, you can even have it send you notifications (although I only have it for when the zones change). You can also modify the tick lists to suit your home & lifestyle.

Links are below 👇 if I happen to not add links in time, they do update at midnight for you.

Zones: https://www.flylady.net/d/zones/

Baby Steps: https://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/31-beginner-babysteps/

full disclosure: the Flylady website is going through some changes and there have been some issues with it loading/ updating, so I will do my best!

Monday is home bleugh day. Run the vacuum round (nothing to detailed, middle of the room), empty bins, change bedding.

We are moving into zone 2 for this week, the kitchen.
Monday's mission is to clean your small appliances. The toaster, coffee maker etc. Wipe the front of the microwave too. This should only take a few minutes, just a quick wipe will do.

Baby Step 5: https://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/31-beginner-babysteps/day-5/
Shine your sink
Get dressed to shoes
Read the message on the Flylady website
Look at the posted reminders in the kitchen & bathroom
Today, write down any negative thoughts you have and turn them into positives. Put those positive words where you will see them.

@BloomingHazel fingers crossed you get to stay home today.
I'm turning my spare bedroom into an office/music/reading room, at the moment my things are scattered all round the house and I'm looking forward to having a cosy space to hide away in.
DP did paint one coat around the door frame eventually. I'm going away on Thursday and want the painting finished ready for the new flooring.
Apart from one LOL, and taking care of the horses and dogs I lounged about in the naughty corner.

Sorry about the house @THATbasicgirl , I walked away from a house I fell in love with because of the survey but I've always regretted it. Hope you find something that's just right for you.

THATbasicgirl · 05/05/2025 08:18

Thanks for the house sympathy folks

Im still feeling deflated about it. It makes me feel a bit trapped. Like that was my first attempt to leave. And it failed.

I found i already had the flylady app lurking on my phone so i will see if that motivates me today!

Captainladder · 05/05/2025 11:13

Morning all. @THATbasicgirl I am a firm believer that if a house more falls through it's because it wouldn't have been right for you in the end. if you have a couple of other viewings lined up - maybe one of those is the right one, fingers crossed for you!
Ive just about managed to stay on top of the clothes laundry these past few weeks - but sheets and towels are doing me in! Today all the bed linen is getting changed and instead of washing only the bed linen I'll put some of it in the clothes laundry as I go along through the week. I realise this isn't rocket science to work out but somehow in my head I'd got trapped in a thought cycle where I had to wash the bed sheets by themselves. it's taken me all my life to have this "aha" moment. I'm 47 🫣🫣🫣
Dh and I usually do a blitz on the cleaning on Saturdays - so generally that's our weekly home bleugh day. Today will be bins and beds and a meal plan for the week. Have a lovely day all.

EndlesslyDecluttering · 05/05/2025 12:03

Hello all, sorry about the house @THATbasicgirl hopefully one of the others will work out.

I’m in the kitchen with half an eye on the VE day celebrations on TV, I like all the old music, we used to sing all these songs at primary school. I don’t have any family connections to the armed forces (WW2 sort of fell between generations for my family and my grandfathers were in reserved occupations anyway, but it is important to remember). Going to do a couple of hours of crochet then stick my head outside because the Red Arrows are due to go over us following the flypast. Then I have to go and pick DS up from uni, he’s coming home for a couple of days, he’s into his last month there now, I can hardly believe it.

Feeling a bit more on top of things this week, laundry is all caught up with, the place is fairly tidy, I need to mop the kitchen floor.

BloomingHazel · 05/05/2025 14:04

Cherry I did get to stay home today, thankfully. A cosy corner in the house just for you sounds bliss!

THAT things will work out in the end, they always do and everything will fall into place.

Captain the sheets plan sounds great! Don't feel bad that it's taken this long to figure that out, I'm sure there's things we all do that wouldn't make sense to someone else. Although on the sheets front, I have to wash mine right away as I only have one set for our bed and DSs bed, and they're a big enough load that they are their own load. Do whatever works for you!

ED only a month left of uni?! 😱 does he know what he wants to do once he's done?

I just cannot shake this sickness. My plan today is to just relax, nap, drink lots of tea with honey, as well as water. I plan on watching at least a couple of movies. My head hurts from the sinus pressure and my neck being tight. I might see if there's a couple yoga stretches that might help with that, I'll try anything at this point!

OP posts:
Captainladder · 05/05/2025 15:16

@BloomingHazel have you tried a neti pot of you are having sinus trouble? It looks like a little tea pot and you use a saline solution to basically wash out your nasal sinus passages. Helps me enormously when I have a cold/ headachey / sinus stuff

BloomingHazel · 05/05/2025 15:21

I haven't tried that, I don't have one. It's something I should probably have though!

2in2022twoyearson · 05/05/2025 15:37

Oh, blooming hazel, you have my sympathy have just got over an illness. There was a stage with so much mucous production up my nose I couldn't decide whether blowing my nose would help, because it relieved pressure for just minutes and also gave me earache. I still have a mild cough. Rest, fluids and time. Get well soon.

I joined the flylady Facebook like baby step 3. And now am going to get back to study, leave Mumsnet alone. and think about housework after my exams. So I'll check in maybe 15th may.

BloomingHazel · 05/05/2025 21:33

2in2022 thank you, I do feel like I'm getting much better, especially after my nap today.
Good luck with your exams!

Tuesday is plan & play day.

Tuesday's mission is to get back to basics and get rid of your dirty dishes. Whether it's in the dishwasher or handwash, get them clean, dry and put away, then shine your sink!

Baby Step 6: https://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/31-beginner-babysteps/day-6/
Continue with the baby steps so far, but then add in today's baby step: learn about hotspots, set your timer for 2 minutes and tackle and clear a hotspot.

Hello everyone. Lovely to find you again and catch up on new month.

I’ve changed my name to reflect what I hope May will bring. The forecast says no rain for the next ten days, which doesn’t often happen in this part of the world, so we’re making the most of it with DH starting on the kitchen flat roof yesterday.

TeenGirl is on study leave, and has her first big exam today. TeenBoy is working alongside DH at bits and pieces of diy. I’ve been under the weather a bit, and doing absolute minimum, tbh. Maybe some gentle decluttering.

EndlesslyDecluttering · 06/05/2025 07:43

Morning, my DD is on study leave too but still going to college as she finds it easier to work there. Exams start next week for her. She did accept a uni offer after all @SunshineAndSpringCleaning

Lovely and sunny today after a dull-ish weekend but a fresh breeze. I'm out for the day but am up to date with laundry and left the kitchen clean.

BloomingHazel · 06/05/2025 14:10

Hi Sunshine 👋 good to see you again. I'm sorry to hear you've not been feeling well either. Take it easy and hopefully it'll pass soon 💐

⭐️for you ED for being caught up on laundry!

I'm feeling great this morning, lots to do today, so I'm glad I'm feeling better so I can get on top of the house.
I'll be back later with some ta das. I hope everyone is having a good day 🍒👋

OP posts:
BloomingHazel · 06/05/2025 20:21

Ta das (so far):
🐶 sheets washed & dried
🐶 mattress & pillow protectors washed & dried
🐶 towels in dryer
🐶 dog beds & blankets in washer
🐶 bank
🐶 dogs to groomer
🐶 washed Jeep
🐶 bathed dogs
🐶 eaten lunch

I've just sat down for a few minutes before DH goes back to work. I'm already over 10k steps! Not sure how accurate that is though, but I'll take it! I'm sure my mum will want to chat in a few minutes. I actually spoke to DD earlier as well, which was nice!

OP posts:
SparrowFeet · 06/05/2025 21:56

Wow you've had a good day today @BloomingHazel
Back to work today but still completed all of the daily routine which included a gym class. Felt like I didn't stop from 7am - 8pm.
Decluttering is feeling good - tackled the draw of doom in the kitchen and got rid of about 10 facemasks that I'm probably more likely to catch something from than actually protect anyone else. Took me less than 10 minutes so spent the other 5 cleaning the bird muck off my car. Blooming pigeons!!!

SunshineAndSpringCleaning · 06/05/2025 22:18

Tesco delivery this morning for some much-needed fresh fruit and veg. TB immediately ate all the green grapes!
Washing all dried in the sunny breeze.
Swept back garden steps.

Went over some French with TG for assessment tomorrow.

Boxed up a messy shelf which made space in the cupboard for other boxes that have been lying around.

Now enjoying looking at the new gap, and not thinking about what to fill it with.

BloomingHazel · 07/05/2025 01:03

SparrowFeet well done on tackling the drawer of doom! We actually don't have one in this house it's shelves in cupboards instead, don't open any!

Sunshine your TB sounds like my TB and of he's anything like mine he's growing like a weed! Mine is taller than me and has been for a few months now! Enjoy the space on the shelf while you have it.

Ta das (after lunch):
🦋 vacuumed
🦋 mopped
🦋 remade bed
🦋 2 more LOLs
🦋 picked DS up from school, stopped in at the office to get something taken care of, nothing bad or anything though, thankfully
🦋 picked up jalapeño & bell pepper plants from an old family friend, caught up for a few minutes with her & her grown son
🦋 got DS back to school after having him eat dinner, ready for the concert tonight, the last one of the school year

We will eat dinner now before we head there as well!

Wednesday is anti-procrastination day. Do something you have been putting off. I have to call the hairdresser for DS, not that I've been putting it off, but I keep forgetting! I set a reminder in my phone for during one of my breaks at work to call her.

Wednesday's mission is to clear the hotspots off the flat surfaces in the kitchen. 🔥🔥🔥
Grab a bin bag and a laundry basket, throw away what's rubbish and anything that needs putting away put in the laundry basket, then put away where it belongs. Set your timer for 15 minutes. If it'll take you longer than that, take a break for 15 minutes then get back at it again for another 15 minutes.

Baby Step 7: https://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/31-beginner-babysteps/day-7/
Do everything we have done so far (it's listed in the link, if that helps), then add to your bedtime routine, getting your clothes out ready for the next day.
I do mine every night before I get in the shower, have it all hanging in the bathroom I get ready in in the morning, including my jewellery I'll be wearing. It really helps me, but I also have to get up and leave really early in the mornings for work.

I popped out of the naughty corner long enough to pot up my new plants.
After LMS yesterday (I picked up the wrong colour paint) I've put off the painting until next week, I'm going away tomorrow for a few days.

SparrowFeet · 07/05/2025 17:25

ooh what new plants do you have @CherryogDog?
anti - procrastination day gone well. Dealt with two things for work I'd been putting off doing as boring yet require focus in equal measure. Also finally messaged kitchen fitter to get a date set.. which means I really need to focus more on sorting out all the crap I don't want/ need in the kitchen. Have a plan to put some things on Olio which I hope will help get rid.

BloomingHazel · 07/05/2025 17:40

Cherry picking up the wrong paint colour is a valid reason for LYS! I hope you have a nice time away.

Well done on anti-procrastination SparrowFeet a new kitchen sounds exciting!

I have also made the appt I needed to make for DS haircut. I do still need to take pictures and upload them for our travel next month.

Thursday is errand day. Bills you need to pay, anything that needs done outside of the home? Today's the day to do it!

Thursday's mission is to spend 15 minutes wiping the surface of your big appliances down. Wipe the handles and front of the fridge, top of the stove, oven door etc.

Baby step 8: https://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/31-beginner-babysteps/day-8/
Today find a 3 ring binder and some paper, write down morning routine on one page & bedtime routine on another. In the link it lists out the morning and bedtime routines.
