Getting back into routines can be hard, with DC going back to school, this is the perfect time to start getting back into the swing of things.

Are you feeling overwhelmed and don't know where to start to get your house back under control from the summer holidays? Or just wanting to try something new?
Join us and try out Flylady! It just may work for you 😊

This is a long running thread, but we are a friendly bunch and all are welcome to join in.

Do NOT sign up for the Flylady emails - it's an excessive amount sent every day.
There are Baby Steps for starting out, add one thing at a time to start good habits and routines.
There are 5 zones that we will rotate through, don't worry about finishing it all this month, it'll come around again next month!

Flylady is NOT about perfectionism!

Daily missions: each day of the week has a different mission.

  • Monday: Home Blessing (or as we call it, home bleugh)
  • Tuesday: plan & play
  • Wednesday: anti-procrastination
  • Thursday: errand day
  • Friday: clean car & purse out a week. It's also date night (with your significant other, or friends, or yourself!)
  • Saturday: family fun day
  • Sunday: renew your spirit

Common acronyms we use:

  • LOL: load of laundry (washing is certainly NOT funny!)
  • DW: dishwasher, we are not rotating wives by any means, although an extra pair of hands could come in handy sometimes 😆
  • LMS: lose/lost my shit
  • DNLMS: did not lose my shit

There are more, feel free to ask us to explain something. I'll try to update links every day, although if you can, it's worth downloading the app, you can even have it send you notifications (although I only have it for when the zones change). You can also modify the tick lists to suit your home & lifestyle.

Links are below 👇 if I happen to not add links in time, they do update at midnight for you.

Sing I'm glad cagletini enjoyed judo. How did your important meeting go?

I worked today, then watered my plants outside. After dinner I finally got my nails done! No brick stained today, as the wind picked up. DH was trying to convince me that we should work on that tonight, but I didn't want to fight the wind.
I've got a busy couple of days ahead, hopefully I'll be able to get on here to add links at least!

Thursday is errand day.

Thursday's mission is to declutter your cling film/ foil/ bags. Whether you keep yours in a cupboard, drawer or on a shelf, check to see if you have any empty boxes/ stray bags/ something you'll never use. Throw away/ put away as needed.

Baby Step 12: https://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/31-beginner-babysteps/day-12/
Continue with the baby steps you have learned so far. If you did end up signing up to the emails, delete them (this is today's task, I promise). I've heard it's an enormous amount sent out every day so never did sign up for them, and we always recommend you don't either as it becomes too much.

It got quiet on the thread! I hope everyone is surviving back to school!

I went out for dinner with a friend after work tonight, so other than starting the DW (DS rotated it), I did no flying.
The catch up was very much needed for both of us, but especially my friend. It felt good to my core to get out with her!

Friday is clean out the car & purse (handbag/ wallet) day.

Friday's mission is to spend 5 minutes checking your cleaning supplies. Do you have enough of everything? Are you running out of anything? If so, add it to your grocery list. Don't forget to check on the cloths/ sponges/ brillo pads etc as well.

Baby Step 13: https://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/31-beginner-babysteps/day-13/
Today's baby step is to find a mission and do it (hint, look to the previous paragraph!). I guess technically if you're just starting out you only have to do the baby steps, but do the missions if you feel up to it.

I’m here! No back to school as such, DD is back at college but that doesn’t really require any input from me other than the odd lift because it’s near my work.

I cleared out my cling film drawer at the weekend (after the spice one ehich is immediately above it). I also did the main food cupboard a week or so back. This kitchen isn’t too bad because its only 3 or 4 years old and I put a lot of thought into organisation when we did it, but clutter does creep in. I need to do the fridge veg drawer very soon.

HazelNotHungryLC · 13/09/2024 17:38

ED well done on being ahead of the mission! I long for a new, better designed kitchen. My cupboards are too small & awkward. I don't see that happening though.

Saturday is family fun day! No daily missions, but there is the baby step still (I always forget that!).

Baby Step 14: https://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/31-beginner-babysteps/day-14/
Read the essay about how to use a calendar (there is a link), as well as the list of morning and bedtime routines.

Is anyone doing anything fun this weekend or just trying to recover from the week??

My goal is to finish staining the brick over the weekend, which should be doable. But also plan on fitting in some relaxing.

Tonight we went to see the high school American football game, because DS was performing the 1st half of a show for marching band. It was so good, I'm so proud of him! Well, all of the kids really, but especially him (proud mum moment) 😍
It's been a long week, have a great weekend everyone!

A long week here in Cabbage House. Another trip to the pregnancy assessment centre with another early labour scare. So not much tidying happening, just lots of relaxing and watching telly and reading. But, this morning:

  • Bed stripped and bedding in the wash
  • Folded all the "waiting" laundry from the airer
  • Put away airer! It does not save time. Drives me mad.
  • Vacuumed lounge
  • Vacuumed sofa and flipped cushions
  • Luften lounge, conservatory and kitchen
  • Repatriated Cabbage Cat's mouse friend 🫠
HazelNotHungryLC · 15/09/2024 07:36

Cabbage it's official, I'm reopening the naughty corner and filling it with fluffy pillows, soft blankets and all the snacks/ treats/ drinks you could need. You need to rest! Do what's best for you and baby, and right now that's rest! Thank you ED for reminding me of the naughty corner.

Saturday was spent staining brick mostly, hoping to be done with it by the end of this weekend. We went out for dinner with SIL & BIL, which was really nice.

Sunday is renew your spirit day. This can be a walk in nature, church, a hot bath, yoga/ stretching, reading a book. Whatever it is, do something to ground you, to prepare you for the following week. What will you do?

Baby Step 15: https://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/31-beginner-babysteps/day-15/

Add making your bed to your morning routine. This one can be controversial, some people air out their beds, others make it right away, either way, don't leave your bed in shambles. Make it neat in the morning so it's inviting to get into at bedtime.

@HazelNotHungryLC I am also resting! So far I'm up to season 3 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer 🤣 lots of gardening sitting time and naps too.

The brick staining sounds so satisfying.

HazelNotHungryLC · 15/09/2024 16:16

I'm glad you are Cabbage!
The brick staining is satisfying! Although it's not the look I was going for initially, but because of the brick colours we started out with, we had to go with a solid stain instead of a more translucent. It does look really good though, I'll post pics when it's done. Hopefully today.

Hello all. Happy Sunday!
@CabbageBearGoat agree, you must rest! Easier said than done often though 💕
i hope you have all had a chance to renew your spirits .... mine was a dog walk with my husband - not a long one but I think we always reconnect and feel like a team when we go walking together regardless of what stresses are going on ... right now that's the fact that my mama is staying with us and may need an operation - dependent on what the next mri and hospital appointments show. It's not anything terminal, her hip replacement keeps popping out 🫣! It's lovely to have her here, but it's not a great situation, and add that to just general kid ferrying around and life... well.... it's just busy!
this weekend I managed to catch up on the laundry, and I do the weekly home blessing Sundays too, works better than monday. So sheets changed, bins emptied, quick hoover, bathrooms done. No decluttering this week....will add in 5 mins daily.

HazelNotHungryLC · 16/09/2024 04:50

Well done on your well balanced weekend Captain. Your walk sounds lovely 😍 it really does sound like you have a lot going on though. I hope everything works out well for your mum.

Staining of the brick is complete! The pool is also empty and put away until next summer. DH & DS worked on replacing the front border with some bricks. We do have to get more bricks though, we are all out!
We are still waiting on the fence to get put back up and we are done with the restoration company!

Monday is home bleugh day.

This week we are in zone 3, main bathroom & one other room of your choice.
Monday's mission is to spend 5 minutes in the "other room" putting away any stash & dash piles. The bathroom mission is to wipe around the back and base of the toilet, an area that often gets forgotten or overlooked.

I started posting last night but my phone went flat.

Busy weekend here, errands, taxiing DCs around, seeing friends, shopping, allotmenting and also my monthly volunteering at a nature reserve, weather was lovely for it, it is mainly maintaining a river and there is something very satisfying about getting your wellies on and wading in (it's shallow, close to the source).

Flying-wise, mainly just the essentials, all beds stripped, bedding washed and line dried and back on again (DCs do their own). I put the electric underblanket back on ours for the winter, it's not cold enough for it yet but I had to try it out.

SingToTheSky · 16/09/2024 11:09

Thanks hazel meeting went well, I have some more work to organise at the moment so things are looking up. The event itself is going to be a bigger networking opportunity than I thought too, with more professionals attending than I’d assumed, so that’s exciting!

Can’t believe it’s Monday. I feel immensely unprepared for the week and I want to sleep. 🤣

MissMarplesNiece · 16/09/2024 11:37

@HazelNotHungryLC Your house is looking really good.

CabbageBearGoat · 16/09/2024 14:35

Bathroom week in Cabbage House. DW away with work for a few days which always feels a bit strange. Doing well so far balancing rest with the satisfaction I get from getting things clean and tidy 😊

So far today:

  • Full S&S in main bathroom (toilet lid, bath taps, sink, sink tap degunk, mirror)
  • Cleaned ensuite toilet
  • Thorough wipe down of coffee machine
  • 1x LOL in the dryer
SleepingIceDragons · 16/09/2024 18:37

We had hell and highwater here this weekend. So feeling really flat and ick. My stomach has noped out over the stress, as has my wish to do anything. Things were said in frustration that hurt feelings and can't be unsaid. It is a fun part of being the one that does the caring you get the brunt of the emotions and lashing out in the adjustment to the new norm. We are in that weird calm where the one who released frustration feels awkward but will have another bout of frustration because they are not adjusting well. And i am done with being the emotional punch bag voice of sensible in the mess. You will find me wandering about cussing and trying to prep for more workmen to install safety aids tomo.

Failing that i will be hiding in my blanket fort in the naughty corner...

HazelNotHungryLC · 17/09/2024 04:33

ED there's no way my DH would be okay with an electric under blanket! I end up just making do with a hot water bottle in the middle of winter.

Sing that sounds very exciting! I really wish you lots of success and it sounds very promising for you.

Miss thank you! I'm thinking we will paint the shutters, door and porch white, to match the house numbers.

Cabbage it does seem like you didn't overdo it, so that's good! Enjoy having the house to yourself for a few days!

Dragons that is a really tough situation to be put in. I really hope it improves for you.

Good news on the home front - we are letting the restoration company know they are done, they need to submit their papers to insurance so we can give them their final cheque!

Also, and I don't know why I did this, I've signed up to help out with 3 marching band competitions - chaperoning a bunch of teens. I'm giving up 3 of my Saturdays coming up to chaperone, and a 4th will be to volunteer to help with the one we are hosting. I'm a glutton for punishment!

Tuesday is plan & play day.

Tuesday's mission is to clean your bin in the bathroom. Flylady suggests putting it in the bath to add water and cleaner to it and scrub the bottom of it. Rinse and dry it before putting it away. I usually just wipe mine, but I also put a bag in it too, so it doesn't get too bad.

Baby Step 17: https://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/31-beginner-babysteps/day-17/
Set a bedtime for yourself. You need your rest too! This is actually something I struggle with myself and I'm trying & failing to go to bed earlier every night.

Definitely room for you in the naughty corner @SleepingIceDragons <plumps up cushions, plugs in coffee machine>

@HazelNotHungryLC the blanket has separate controls for each side to solve that problem, I don't think DH uses his much as he runs hotter than me. Great news that the renovations are finished.

EternallyDelighted · 17/09/2024 09:41

Also it has a timer, I put it on for an hour when I go upstairs so it will turn off after the hour is up, it's not on all night.

HazelNotHungryLC · 17/09/2024 14:04

Oh that's very nice ED. I know both my DCs have heated blankets that have a timer, but I think they can also be controlled by a phone!
