Changing bedding - how often is too often?

SorryButThatsAFact · 06/10/2022 21:06

So, a friend of mine recently popped over for lunch and as she stayed a little longer than expected, I asked her if she wouldn't mind giving me a hand to change the beds.

Somehow we got on to the topic of how often bedding should be changed and I said I did mine twice a week. She was completely aghast and said she only changed hers once a fortnight and that twice a week was 'far too often'

I've always done mine twice a week, just like my mum did, so have never given it much thought.

So now I'm wondering what's a 'normal' number of bedding changes.

Any thoughts?

Our bed: Once a week religiously.
When the kids were young and their beds: Once a fortnight
Now they have to do it themselves: I hate to think

Fortnightly here, but I would push it to 3 if I had a had a few nights away or something so I had only slept in it 10/11 days at the two week mark.

I'd like to say it was environmental concern but realistically I just can't be bothered with that much washing.

TomBradysLeftKneecap · 06/10/2022 22:43

But I am a little "aghast" (I love that word and only ever see it on here) that you'd ask someone to help you put the sheets back on unless they were going to sleep in them. Come on, is there some goss here....?! 😂

Can you explain what's grim and gross about changing the bedding fortnightly or every 3 weeks? What exactly do you think will happen to those of us who leave the bedding on for 2 or 3 weeks before changing it? I am probably extra gross as I only change my pyjamas once a week. I do shower every morning, wear clean knickers daily, clean bra and shirt/blouse/t-shirt every 2 days (every day if I've got hot and sweaty).

I'm with you. Our bedding gets changed... when I remember. Every month, I guess? Whenever I notice it's getting a bit grubby. (or whenever I spot a really good drying day in the winter weather forecast!) I mean really, if you can't see or smell the dirt, what are you changing it for? You are washing already clean sheets just for the sake of it.

Sunday night is new pyjama night in our house. What a treat! :) I also have clean undies (knickers, vest, tights, etc) every day and change outer clothing every other day unless it's actually got dirty.

The performative "cleanliness" of some people really gets me down when I read headlines about the nation's water supplies or energy consumption.

Rupertgrintismyguiltypleasure · 06/10/2022 22:47

Every 2 weeks.... in the summer sometimes once a week depends on how much we’ve all been sweating.

Muststopeating · 06/10/2022 22:48

We're facing planned power outages this winter if we don't all stop being quite so OTT.

This is OTT. And YABVU if you are also tumble drying those sheets (I am not a tumble dryer hater but it should be used in moderation).

Foronenightonly01 · 06/10/2022 22:49

Once a fortnight (when I’m organised!)…but everyone showers before bed and has pjs that are changed weekly…what on Earth are you doing that gets your bedding dirty every 2-3 days??!!!!

😅 No gossip, I'm afraid. I'm just mystified how some people on MN can fixate on one irrelevant thing that has nothing to do with the question.

If I wanted advice on friendships, or sermons on the environment and energy consumption, I'd ask 😁

I don't understand why people are so 'aghast' that the OP would ask her mate to help with the bedding! I wouldn't batter an eyelid at my friend asking me. She's asking for help with changing bedding not poking her piles back in.

Thank you!

I was asking her to help change a bed - that's all.

It's not like I asked her to finger me during Loose Women.

Weekly in the summer and up to fortnightly in the winter when it's more difficult to get the bedding dry.

Moveoverdarlin · 06/10/2022 22:57

Yep, exactly that.

Mummyoflittledragon · 06/10/2022 22:57

Fortnightly. Used to be weekly but I need to rest a lot so my health won’t allow.

Cactus720 · 06/10/2022 22:58

About once a month. Twice a week is insane, imo.

Cheeselog · 06/10/2022 23:00

Once a week to once a fortnight is normal. More than once a week you have too much time on your hands, less than once a fortnight and ours is a bit grotty.

Greyarea12 · 06/10/2022 23:00

You must be forever washing and drying bedding.

And I have to say (light heartedly) that if a friend asked me to help them change their bedding it would be a... em... no thanks, think I will decline that request. Hate even doing my own therefore I aim for fortnightly too.

Whattheduck · 06/10/2022 23:01

Weekly here

Notjustabrunette · 06/10/2022 23:04

About once a fortnight. Sometimes more if it’s a heatwave or somebody’s ill and they’ve been lying about in bed all day.

IrisVersicolor · 06/10/2022 23:05

I used to do it religiously once a week. But I’ve used the energy crisis to justify once a fortnight.

Mrseven · 06/10/2022 23:07

I change mine 1x a quarter

P.S. YABVU to ask a friend to assist you.
YABU to change sheets so often, have you thought about the environment?

I change my pillowcases every day wash the mattress every so often and have fleece blankets that get washed regularly. Soo much easier than a duvet and duvet covers. They dry almost instantly and i just layer them up in winter and have a thin one in summer

Why wouldn't you just flip your pillow, to save washing 14+ pillowcases a week??

Monty27 · 06/10/2022 23:08

neighboursmustliveon · 06/10/2022 22:24

This is us. Fortnightly would be great but reality is once a month 😂

And me. In my defence I sleep alone. Sometimes I'll change the sheet and pillowcases but not the duvet cover. I find that so bloody tedious but yes every 2\4 weeks

Oliverfunyuns · 06/10/2022 23:09

If they're not dirty, probably once a month. It's too much work to wash them twice a week or even once a week, unless there's a darn good reason for it.

I asked how often people changed their sheets - not to give opinions on things that are none of their business.

Weekly here (ish). More if it's been hot or we've been ill / especially rambunctious / hungover, less if one or both of us has been away a couple of nights or it's cool.
