Changing bedding - how often is too often?

SorryButThatsAFact · 06/10/2022 21:06

So, a friend of mine recently popped over for lunch and as she stayed a little longer than expected, I asked her if she wouldn't mind giving me a hand to change the beds.

Somehow we got on to the topic of how often bedding should be changed and I said I did mine twice a week. She was completely aghast and said she only changed hers once a fortnight and that twice a week was 'far too often'

I've always done mine twice a week, just like my mum did, so have never given it much thought.

So now I'm wondering what's a 'normal' number of bedding changes.

Any thoughts?

I do wash the pillowcases more often, because it's easy to toss them in with other things, and they seem to need washing more frequently. (Oily hair...🙄)

sponsabillaries · 06/10/2022 23:12

Twice a week is ridiculous. Once a week, which is what what was recommended to us when one of the DC was diagnosed with a dust mite allergy.

Two weeks of sex, sweat, farting, sleep drooling and dead skin cells? Sounds fine. As I said you wash your clothes because your body touches it. Why doesn't this apply to bedding? Shudder.

Are you sleeping naked?

I wear pyjamas, so minimal skin contact with the bedding.

Yes, you wash clothes partly because of skin contact, but also because the outside of the clothes get more dirty than the inside.

Why have I never thought of just changing the sheet and pillowcases every week, rather than stripping everything fortnightly ?

Because it’s not the same?

Fortnightly, but then I sleep alone so don't stink the place up so much.

That's a really unusual thing to ask of a friend. Really unusual, unless I've led a sheltered life. I have a couple of very close friends who sometimes stay longer than expected. No way would I ever ask them to help me make a bed unless it was one they were going to sleep in ( i.e longer than expected meant that they were unexpectedly staying overnight). Very odd thing to ask of a friend.

Unless you are ill or tired or otherwise indisposed and they are aware that you need assistance.

I have a friend who has clean sheets every day, although to be fair she also has household staff and one of those giant ironing machines that hotels have. Not sure how you’d do it otherwise.

Once a week here.

Mine weekly (maybe fortnightly max)
DS every other day at the moment because he were the best

ChecoPerez · 06/10/2022 23:16

Once a fortnight, but if unwell or a sweaty night then more frequently.

I strip everything when changing the bedding to give the duvet a good airing as well as the mattress and pillows.

Also we have two sets of bedding that dont match each other, and it would bother me to have the striped cover with the leafy pillow case

...who irons bedding???

TheTeddyBears · 06/10/2022 23:18

She must have. I thing better to do! Aim for every 2 weeks. It sometimes it's more 3weeks. Also at this time of year I can't get it outside with the weather and so difficult to fry in the house or the dryer. I think it's dry feels hot and get it out and parts are still damp drives me mad!

Anyone who has 100% cotton bedding otherwise it’s horribly wrinkled. (Ok I have an ironing lady).

BitOutOfPractice · 06/10/2022 23:19

If you were my friend I’d have been leaving sharpish. I cba to go my own chores, let alone someone else’s. That’s why she was aghast! I mean, could the ruddy sheets not have waited till tomorrow?

No.

Think we should all go for the fortnightly, due to Electricity cost and the winter weather, not being able to dry washing outside.

Ive always done weekly but needs must, if it cuts down on electricity cost I’m all for that. Also shower ever second day, let’s go for it.

PhilInt · 06/10/2022 23:23

Not prescriptive but intervals are roughly; duvet covers 4-6 weeks, sheets 2-4 weeks, pillow cases 2 weeks.

No pets, shower in evenings but not every evening and no fluids flying around here! :D

PhilomenaPringle · 06/10/2022 23:25

I'm not interested in people judging me for asking a friend to help me change the beds - I only mentioned that for context

Yes, but it's striking a lot of people as a bit odd .Because it is. So we can be forgiven for finding it remarkably odd.

CatchersAndDreams · 06/10/2022 23:27

My electric bill will be the same whether I wash my bedding or not. I only have white bedding and a huge washing machine so it goes in with my once a week white wash anyway.

Mine are cotton, but did ironing it...or paying anyone to iron it! Waste of time, money and electricity imo

Lessofallthisunpleasantness · 06/10/2022 23:29

About once a fortnight. More often in summer if has been hot and sweaty!

IrisVersicolor · 06/10/2022 23:29

It’s the tumble drying that costs the money.

MrsClarkandPercy · 06/10/2022 23:30

Once a week is our routine.

I think twice is quite nice though. Like being in a hotel : D

Personally I cannot stand sheets being left on too long. I think it's squalid ... just how I was brought up.
