@sleepyhoglet my problem area is the entire house 😂

I don't know where my sudden drive has come from but I'm loving it! I've always hated parting with things but I'm finding it so liberating!

I need to do my desk ready for tomorrows start back at work but its been a dumping ground for 2 weeks :/

LivingInaBuildingSite · 04/01/2022 16:09

I keep the kids spare bedding in their wardrobes at the bottom, it’s not ideal but is handy.

I sort of have an airing cupboard built around where my boiler moved to a couple of years ago.
It has a few shelves and some are super organised with the different size towels neatly folded. The top however is a disaster area including floaties for the pool, random camping style towels we never use! And god knows what else.

I’m thinking I might try and keep count of items coming into the house too so I can really see I’m reducing stuff. Not including food/useable stuff like shampoo, etc. (of the type we actually use I mean).
Can’t keep track of what others bring in though so won’t be perfect.

But so far, nothing in!
22 out.

Gassylady · 04/01/2022 16:30

Just a quick check in. Halfway through top of the bedside table. Most disappointed I found three bank statements there so that makes five different places Ive found them in this last few weeks. I'm really prompt at dealing with post now but not so prompt at filing the things in the right tax folder Blush

IncessantNameChanger · 04/01/2022 16:47

I have only managed to clear the table so far! Ds14 is still off school so took him out for lunch at his request.

I'm getting nowhere fast

Bigoldhag · 04/01/2022 17:21

Oooh just had a power through, cleaned and decluttered my bookshelf. 11 books off to charity bag, two notebooks to the recycling and old kindle up to the ‘to sell’ pile. Its very old but seems to fetch £15-20 on ebay.

Also recycled a candle lid, recycled a bunch of papers etc from my desk.

Also added a set of halloween lights to the charity pile.

lljkk · 04/01/2022 17:59

About 10 items to charity shop today.

londonmummy1966 · 04/01/2022 18:02

I've had a good day as I tackled a floor to ceiling cupboard in my bedroom. It was mainly full of accessories so I have done a huge cull on scarves and evening bags. I also found a load of spare running kit so I have been through that and sorted into keep sell and donate. All the donated stuff has gone - the charity shop is not taking donations at the moment so I took it all to the donation point in TKMaxx instead. I now also have 12 empty underbed storage bags all stored together inside one of them. There is now enough space in the bedroom cupboard for all the stuff that is left in the old present cupboard in the bathroom to be emptied completely. This is really good as I want to redo the bathroom and get rid of this cupboard and have a shower instead.

DH also decided to get rid of some books so took them to a books and music shop. Sadly he then filled the shelves with more books....

lljkk · 04/01/2022 18:23

I feel like I never buy stuff, constantly give stuff away, and still am drowning in stuff (!!)

SarahJessicaParker1 · 04/01/2022 18:28

It's so difficult to get rid of stuff and yet so easy to accumulate stuff even when you aren't buying anything Confused

Dh is not much help tbh. We have loads of towels and we don't use them all. But he is reluctant to get rid of any 😩. Not sure why everything has to become a discussion. But I suppose they are his things too.

toomanyhobbies · 04/01/2022 18:31

I’ve been following these threads for a while have posted a few times but never stuck to it. So since Christmas I have tidied up the spare room which is also my office so I could work again today. Went through some old crochet magazines and kept any patterns I liked and got rid of the magazines. I also got rid of 3 balls of wool to my mum may well get what’s left of them back.

I also finished a book so have passed that on to my mum. Have listed some of Ds games on fb so hopefully will get so interest there.

I have a bag of dvds, 2 pairs of boots and some more games in my car to drop off at the charity shop.

I’m trying to stay on top the tidying and cleaning as that then helps me see what stuff needs sorting or doesn’t have a place to live.

It was first days back at school and work today so I have finally managed to go through my work email and sort it all out and go through all the folders. Just got 1 folder left to do.

Ds is Christmas mad so the decorations in his room and living room won’t be down till the weekend. It’s also his birthday party Thursday so expecting lots more stuff in.

Dh has got rid of lots of junk from the back of the house to work (he works in waste) and we should be getting rid of our old sofa and chair next week had the new one delivered this week.

SuperDiaperBaby · 04/01/2022 18:33

I have discovered it is harder to get rid of things when you not at home all day but no idea why that doesn't seem to stop the items coming in when you aren't there!

Slow progress today but went back around a couple of areas I felt I had done and grabbed some more items for the bin and recycling. Also booked a slot at the tip for a few days time so I need to have a bit of a push to clear more.

SarahJessicaParker1 · 04/01/2022 18:34

Yes! Exactly. Wtf? It makes no sense. It's like it has a mind of its own

lljkk · 04/01/2022 18:37

We should consider a towel cull. Maybe I'll count them to try to persuade myself. Local animal shelters are asking for old towels, anyway.

Mommabear20 · 04/01/2022 18:42

@SarahJessicaParker1 I have the same issue with DH! I've now found that if I take things out and put in bags and then ask him to go through the bag and take out anything he wants to my keep, 9/10 times he won't bother with any of it! Think it's just because it's there so why move it kinda thing?

I'd like to join please. I think I was on one of these threads a couple of years ago but thing's happened and I stopped. I really need to sort out my life, so decluttering seems like a good place to start (I'm also dieting, which will take priority if I can't manage both at once).

This year I have sorted the bathroom: 2 binbags of stuff has gone. Bath toys, toiletries we will never use, etc. And everything else that was lying around has been given a place and put away.
Today I was at work, so very little done in the house, but I decluttered a load of papers from my classroom that I won't ever look at again. I think this evening I will attempt to sort the medicine cabinet and get rid of anything out of date.

SingToTheSky · 04/01/2022 19:01

Wow this thread moves fast!
I got rid of a few random bits today - DS was looking for something in the Cupboard of Doom so I took the opportunity to grab some things to throw out/recycle. Would have loved to do more but yesterday’s covid booster has kicked in!

seperatedmum · 04/01/2022 19:16

some, really, rubbish from my room
pair of unsavable leggings to clothes recycling
old manky toothbrushes replaced dental nurse

Dinosauraddict · 04/01/2022 20:06

I've been out all day on a family adventure today so no real decluttering done, but as DH was driving I took the opportunity to unsubscribe from a load of email mailing lists - my attempt at decluttering my inbox and saving myself deleting dozens of useless emails per day going forwards! Tomorrow will be more productive I hope.

seperatedmum · 04/01/2022 20:38

then got really triggered by one child's school books, they all struggle so much at school and their dad never did recognise this. then that child cried about a broken pencil so I couldn't. it's easier to just leave the clutter sometimes 😢
Beketaten · 04/01/2022 20:38

Joining! Listed my old slow cooker on Freecycle and just back from the textile recycling bank. Trying to do something a day, at least as long as I'm working from home.

Namechangesagain · 04/01/2022 21:08

I post on here then life takes over and i lose track. Been decluttering hard here. Starting in September I got rid of 1 toy a week so the children didn't notice and it meant Christmas wasn't over whelming.
Have decluttered all the old pants/ socks etc that don't fit anymore that the preschool was delighted with for their spares box!
After pandemic and a new baby 2020 then back to work and last year of university 2021 this year is the year i sort the house out!!

Debsdonein · 04/01/2022 21:24

Did kitchen cupboards today and gave a load of in date but won't get eaten food to the local food bank.
Christmas cards and boxes to the recycling centre.
Towels and some fleecy throws given to the local animal shelter.

SuperDiaperBaby · 04/01/2022 21:36

@seperatedmum I'm sorry it made you sad and even more sorry that school is a struggle for your children - that is a tough one.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 04/01/2022 22:09

Joining as I have a whole house to declutter. We moved here last February and it looks like a bomb hit it.
I'm going on maternity leave soon so I should be able to get more thrown out.
We also have several outbuildings to declutter so it definitely won't just be a job for 2022 Grin.

We talk regularly about not buying more stuff but more and more comes in each week.
