Thank you to EerilyDeleted for being an excellent leader on the October thread! Time to put your feet up for a well earned rest now!

This is my first time running the thread so sorry if the links below don't work I'm learning as I go!! If they don't I'll come back and try again Grin

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launchpad for more experienced fledglings Launchpad.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

Home Bleugh - Flylady's Home Blessing routine

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

And finally "The Naughty Corner" - this is for Fledglings who perhaps didn't get done what they had planned for the day but are in need of a comfy seat, pile of cushions, tasty snacks, stiff drink and friends to chat to

As always massive lists hill
Tinselette that's good news

Tada
Quick tidy front room
Regained control bins/recycling situation
Littertrays cleaned and refilled
Hoover stairs as DD lend us her battery.two weeks and there's enough hair to knit scoutcat a onesie or make a short haired wig!!we really are A Shedding Household
Help dd2 wash hair with jug (reflux and low pressure shower weren't compatable)
*Check on D's as eyes were funny.now head hurts but it's all forehead- I thought migraines are just on one side?
*Not seen lil zoo in hours.quick check she's not sleeping(doesn't sleep well at night) nope.shes editing online
Put dd2 duvet in wash with some fabric disinfectant to remove "cat juices"(as she calls it) at least if last stain we scrub at doesn't come out we know it's "clean" then)

Late brekkie(930) means I'm not remotely hungry yet..

DD has asked "d"h as he's not at work to walk with her.ds might go too which means a bit of respite .sadly I'm waiting for doc chat about/with lil zoo so no chances a cheeky nap

Stilllivinginazoo · 27/11/2020 12:29

Ps I can confirm danger naps are no better with teens either-
Dd2 took new meds yesterday then went back to bed to watch TV.ended up asleep 4-8pm and then slept dreadfully and is in FOULEST of tempers

Dancingtomusic · 27/11/2020 12:35

Mrs Tidy- I totally hear you - Sending you a big hug!
Last Thursday was very difficult at my house.

So this Thursday just gone, I made sure I didnt physically push myself to much so I have energy when the kids come back. I think they are exhusted after P.E.
While the kids were at school I cooked some veg for me in the oven.

I got fruit ready on the table and cereal and hot milk for the kids to fill up on as they are so hungry coming back from school.

I did make the pancake batter ready for the kids at 5pm. So when they were hungry we could eat.

Then I told them they can watch cbeebies as I know they are exhusted. So they can relax and I gave myself time off until 5pm.

Today will be oven food.

Mrs Tidy, do whatever makes an easier Thursday evening for you all.Flowers

Dancingtomusic · 27/11/2020 14:12

Woolly- this is the dress I have ordered...maybe velvet might be a bit hot....Oops. I am hoping to buy some white velour and add a white trim to make it more Christmasy.
I thought it would be fun for my fraggles to see me dressed up.😂

foxessocks · 27/11/2020 15:43

Love all these really glamorous Christmas dresses!! The best I've done is a very very fluffy Christmas jumper and dd has the same one so we are matching (I don't usually go for matching stuff but she insisted and actually the jumpers are lovely!)

Today has been busy...

Ta das
School run
Went to Next with ds to collect parcels
Went back home, ds watched some TV and I did the dishwasher and made some more mince pies
Took ds to dh in the office as I had opticians and not allowed to bring anyone else to the appointment (I'm assuming if you had no alternative they'd have to let you but they were quite funny about it when I asked!?)
Went to opticians - good news is my eyes are now okay so new contact lense solution obviously much better than the previous one. She said lots of people have issues with the other one...which makes you wonder why they don't change it?!
Went to m&s
Went to Sainsbury's to collect parcel and get bits I forgot in m&s!
Went back to the office to pick the kids up (dh had collected dd from school)
Filled the car up
Finally got home and sorted through all the parcels
Hung washing up

I then made a cup of tea and have been doing some online Christmas shopping but it's not going well, everything I want is out of stock 🤷‍♀️ so far all I've committed to is a pencil case for dd!

How is everybody doing this afternoon? Glad it's the weekend or is it just same old, same old now...I certainly feel a bit like that! We need to get outdoors a bit more this weekend I think.

I have really not done much flying this week. And now I'm comfy on the sofa I don't see much else getting done. I'm not setting a very good example thread leading at the moment...

By the way did anyone want to take over for December thread? Not sure how December is next week!!

OP posts:
foxessocks · 27/11/2020 15:46

By the way dh (and mine technically although I work from home) office is extremely quiet on a Friday as lots of people have Friday off. And they all have individual offices. So we weren't putting anyone at risk with the kids being there. Isn't it weird how we now feel the need to explain these things?!

OP posts:
SingToTheSky · 27/11/2020 16:25

I can’t believe it’s December so soon! How?! 😫

I am happy to do December, if people don’t mind that I’m fairly casual on the links 😂 although I like the idea of the Christmas related extra missions.

Been to the home ed meet up and it was nice, only talked to two friends but sat and chatted the whole time. Absolutely shattered now 🤦‍♀️ and am thus a tad grumpy.

ExpensivelyDecorated · 27/11/2020 16:27

Afternoon,

Foxes - glad your eyes are better, which solution was it and what sort of lenses do you wear? I am guilty of using the cheapest solution in the supermarket for mine, so far with no problems....

I have had two stints at the allotment today, covering it with flattened cardboard boxes and manure (several of us have shared a truckload delivery of it). Washing is on, just thinking about dinner.

ExpensivelyDecorated · 27/11/2020 16:28

Sing - I think we usually go even more casual on links etc in December. No one will mind I'm sure, thank you for offering.

HillsBesideTheSea · 27/11/2020 16:41

Builders are done

massive mould in the room corner found with severe damp 1st round of tea tree treatment has been done. Just airing the room out. De-humidifiers has been put in the corner, radiator in that room fixed and running. WIndow open yes I know complete waste but it needs aired and dry before it gets dark and freezing

Mount ironmore has been cleared for precisely the next 12hrs whilst the laundry mountain is being tackled
Laundry mountain has got out of control because guess which corner we found damp in - yep the one where the spare bedding that was supposed to be transferred to the linnen cupboard so all that needs washing now.
chicken in the oven because I forgot I'd taken it out of the freezer to defrost yesterday Hmm and am in the middle of making pizza for tea. Will be nice to have tea half done for tomo tbh.

Evict the jigsaw collection from the linnen closest, delegate the job of evicting the 2inch layer of dust.

Convince teen to move books on the bookshelf where jigsaws will be going.
Sneeze a lot of the huge amounts of dust being whirled up

Going to be honest, flagging. But there is so much left to be done it is silly

HillsBesideTheSea · 27/11/2020 16:44

Also I have just managed to book teen a blood test right before one of his busiest days with mocks fuck!

HillsBesideTheSea · 27/11/2020 17:01

ED are you lasagna gardening, no dig or just weed supressing?

Sing thank you for offering to run the thread!

Foxes glad your eye is better!

ALL the christmas dresses are stunning. You will all look fabulous I am sure!

MrsTidy I agree with what all the others said. They generally say it better. Just sometimes we need to adapt our expectations to make life easier.

Zoo hope the chat with the doctors went ok and you got a little respite even if cheaky nap didn't happen.

foxessocks · 27/11/2020 17:23

Thank you sing casual is absolutely fine , it's a busy time of year!!

ED monthly contacts and I was using Specsavers own brand solution, now I'm using Specsavers own brand gentle solution (which I knew nothing about previously!) which begs the question...why aren't they all gentle?! 😂
I just get Specsavers because they gave me some for free with my first order and now I just add it whenever I buy lenses. I guess I should have shopped around! But now I'm reluctant to switch from the new one as it's made me a bit paranoid!

I haven't moved since my last post. But I have ordered dh lots of Christmas presents, mostly t-shirts (I think I'll need to return some, as some come up too short for him). Found a good water bottle for him too which is what he asked for, online and the delivery is free, black Friday sale, I'd forgotten all about it! But then I accidentally found more t-shirts and ordered those too 🤦‍♀️

ExpensivelyDecorated · 27/11/2020 19:03

Hills - a bit of all of those really, plot badly needed organic matter, CBA to finish weeding it and plenty of cardboard available.

Just about to start a zoom quiz, better put my phone away.

HillsBesideTheSea · 27/11/2020 19:04

Christmas present shopping should count as flying imo Foxes!

There are plans afoot for the christmas decorations to go up on the 1st. I am having a minor panic as the house is definitely not ready for christmas decorations yet!

HillsBesideTheSea · 27/11/2020 19:05

Good luck with the quiz ED!

SingToTheSky · 27/11/2020 19:33

Christmas prep definitely counts!

I’m in bed watching iPlayer with my ankles on a hot water bottle. 😂 Sooo glad it’s the weekend!!!

Ah yes it’s the cold that has it in for my joints too woolly I really didn’t overdo it today but it was just a bit on the chilly side in the village hall.

I’m enjoying binge watching a BBC series though (called Life - it’s got quite a cast!).

SingToTheSky · 27/11/2020 22:54

ta da continued
🍉got DS through more work
🍉went to home ed meet up - DS and his friend cracked the code to open the suitcase, hurrah!
🍉forced myself to relax and rest due to flare up warning signs
🍉wrote a scary to do list (more of a brain dump really as too many things to remember)
🍉bit of reading

Night all 🍒👋

Sherin18 · 27/11/2020 23:20

Hiya, I have managed to get some flying done today. Not too much, just the mission. I did the same for DD’s bed too and I have done a wash of some baby clothes. I think from next week I will properly start as DD should be feeling a bit better then hopefully. DM came over today with stew for dinner for us, she stayed with DD whilst I remade the beds. It was nice to have a bit of a break.

sing I’ve never watched Arthur Christmas before but we both really enjoyed it.

mc I have a few pillows to prop me up, I completely forgot about this part of pregnancy. I’m in a bubble with my mum and nan, but I’m a bit worried that they may get COVID and then I can’t have a birth partner or maybe they’ll get it when baby is born and they can’t come over. It’s so stressful.

Thank you tinselette she’s feeling a bit better today, I have got some more sleep so I’m feeling much better.

wooly hopefully I will have help from my mum and nan but that’s all dependant on whether they get COVID. I would say we should isolate for 2 week before my due date, but obviously babies don’t come on their due date so we can’t be sure when to isolate. I think I have found a name, I’m having a boy, I think I’m going to call him Ethan.

Your plan to have Thursdays off seems like a good idea tidy

Thank you zoo that’s really kind of you. She’s okay, she hasn’t been sick but she’s still not herself and her belly really hurts, I think maybe from being sick so much. She’s on the mend though, just very clingy. She’s not had a sickness bug like this before so I think it’s scared her a little bit. Your walk sounds lovely, I think I might get out with DD tomorrow, some fresh air may do us both some good. I hope your DS feels better.

Sorry you still feel rubbish hills and sorry about the damp!

I love the dress dancing

Good going for with the Christmas shopping foxes

DD is in my bed but she’s asleep. I’m catching up on I’m a celeb. I think I have a name decided now :)

Bowerbird5 · 27/11/2020 23:24

Wow!
Such a lot of tweeting fledglings I bet I can’t remember who said what now.
Dancing the dress looks lovely. Ebay often have good trimmings and buttons. BF shops for them which reminds me I don’t think I have spoken to her since last weekend. Must ring her tomorrow.

MrsTidy I would plan something that can either be cooked in slow cooker or something very easy for Thursdays. Pizza, sausage, beans and egg, fish and wedges or chips anything that can be thrown in the oven while you sit with a mug of tea or something stronger. Early bedtime for everyone.
Sing my wedding dress was a blues green not exactly turquoise not sure what colour you would call it. Long, pretend velvet. It is up the loft.
Hills you have done loads over the last two days. Great your builders are done. Mine is threatening to come tomorrow. More plastering. I am so fed up with the house a mess. It is so dusty my cough which had nearly gone is back. I wiped the rim of the loo with loo roll and Method today and it was filthy. Grey brown dust.

Bowerbird5 · 27/11/2020 23:51

Sherin don’t worry about lists just join in the crack. Remember some of us have been here for years. I have been here since just before Cagletini was born I lurked before that for a month or two. I still don’t always have a list and I have no kids at home now just the recycled teenager. Sorry you are in Tier 3 but perhaps it will move soon. How many weeks left are you?

We are in Tier 2 but people are not happy as only two places are causing the problem and areas were quite different in number.

I wish I had brought a hottie to bed. My feet are cold.

Today.
I slept until 10:30. I woke at 8 had a wee, went back to 💤 bed. Had a cup of tea and DH was doing the jigsaw. So I joined him. Did about ab hour in house then had a banana and we went for a litter picker walk. Went from the bridge to the crossroads. Took two hours and we picked five carrier bags of rubbish and fifteen bottles. Some were yesterday’s that we had missed picking up on the way back. I can’t understand the mentality of someone who throws bottles from a car in a beautiful village. There is a tip in the city and recycling bins at another village or in the city supermarkets.some of the rubbish is from the flyer over the road ( motorway) and so it is being thrown by cars. So we have done a mile and a half of decluttering the village instead of staying home and decluttering my house. At least it should stay quite nice for Christmas. I am going to go a every week of December.
We came hungry and thirsty. Had a mug of tea or two and some banana cake and finished the jigsaw. DH had a longish nap in the middle.
Finished the mincemeat with zest and juice and brandy. Will sterilise jars and pot tomorrow. I just have mince pies and one Christmas Cake to make.
We ordered some things from Lakeland.Damn I think I had some vouchers. I forgot about those and so did DH.
Sorry I can’t remember the other things so cheery🍒👋 waves to everyone

Bowerbird5 · 28/11/2020 00:00

Sherin Ethan is a lovely name and not too many about. I would have liked it if DD had been a boy but it sounded a bit like DS 3 name. I think we have only two at school and both were lovely. I’m glad your little one is feeling a bit better.
By the way occasionally babies do come on there due date. DD did even though the Consultant thought she would be a month early. I didn’t know baby was a girl until I had here and I asked the midwife to check🤣

MrsTidyHouse · 28/11/2020 03:49

Thanks all for the kind words. I'm going to go over suggestions this weekend, and have a strategy in future. We all had an early night last night, by only about ten or fifteen minutes, but it was calm. I found a podcast of tinkly background music, and just carried it around with me as they got ready for bed. It made quite adifference.

Big to-do list for tomorrow.
